Had my arc 200 for several months . Got the new 205 pro a few weeks ago . Arc captain is my new favorite weld machine brand been a Lincoln fan boy my whole life . On my arc 200 I upgraded the power cables and bolted several grounds inside the machine and it welds great , I burn ++++p 6010 all day no problem, no arc going out not fighting the machine , hood down I'm not knowing if I'm using a miller bobcat or arc captain . My new 205 ,opened it up and the build quality has doubled. Grounds bolted in almost same spots I did on my arc 200. Upgraded power cable, ground going straight to bolt on tied in w others. Wind tunnel , and fan on demand . Nice , I want to buy another. I really like both arc 200 and 205 . I put 205 and generator plus air compressor in my truck and lighter now than bobcat by itself. I will be getting mig 200 next and sell a few of my others .hands down get you a 205 now , if you have the skill can do serious work with arc captain. ... show more

As you can tell from the pictures I am not a professional welder. I learned long ago in school and have only done the occasional weld since. I was skeptical of this unit for being so small and light, but the reality is it gets the job done. I like pic number two comparing my hand me down arc welder to the new one! The scary part is the max amps are about the same for each. So far I have used this mostly on "auto" mode where you set the rod diameter and it sets the current. It always sets the current to the max for that rod size (based on what I could find on the internet). So for a 7018 & 3/32 rod it used 100 amps. The internet shows a range of 65 to 100 amps for that rod. For a 6013 & 1/8th rod it used 130 amps. The manual does state you may need to adjust the current. My first weld is the one that burned through the metal. I used the rods that came with the unit (6013 at 130 amps). I am pretty sure that is way too many amps for this thin metal. It worked much better on an old T post (pic 3). The second time I went faster, but the weld/bead is not so good. I should have dropped the amps instead. I had much better luck using a 7018 at 100 amps (two outer welds on pic one). So far this unit pretty much has as much power as my old beast and unlike that one it can run on 110 or 220 volts! Most people don't have 220 available in their garage and it is a long run from my dryer plug in the house. I like how this machine is idiot proof. You can't plug the ground cable in the wrong hole, vice versa. Pretty much all you need is to read how to get started and watch a couple of online videos and you are good to get started. It is going to take me a ton more practice and maybe even a refresher class to start producing quality welds. ... show more

First of all, I am not a welder, nor do I have any experience with welding. Thus, I might write something incorrect when it comes to welding and look like a complete moron because I am a complete moron pertaining to all things welding. I picked this up because someone in our household wanted to experiment with welding. It's a great skill to have, and, quite honestly, it pays really well if you're good at it. This kit is small and compact enough that you can take it wherever you might need a quick welding job. Don't let the size fool you: It has more than enough power to meet your needs. I might note here that this device is not a plasma or MIG welder. One of the best things about this product is that it has settings that you can either set up on your phone with an app that has an easy to use interface, or (and this is pretty cool) "beginner mode," pre-set modes based off the material and stick size that you are using. That's my kind of setting. It comes with ten 6013 sticks (whatever that means), and it has it's own dust cover to protect it from...well, dust! You just cover it up, put the strap over your shoulder, and you're on your way to your next project. This device will not make you a professional welder, but it will give you some practical experience, and it will do the job very well. It has safety features built in to protect complete welding morons like myself from injuring myself and others like overload protection and a feature that will keep it from overheating. If you're not concerned about it being "pretty," just functional, this might be your way to go. ... show more
