  • must have tool for bonfires
Size: High
I can't believe I didn't buy this sooner. Instead of buying kindling sticks, I'm not making my own. The use of this tool is very intuitive, and it's sturdy. I was able to anchor it down with no issues and it chopped the wood with no problems. Anyone who has been buying kindling sticks, DON'T, get this instead; it's worth the investment. ... show more

  • Not bad if you are splitting VERY dry wood
Size: Small
On the whole, this a solid kindling splitter if you are trying to split very dry pieces. It's well constructed and all the welds seem to be right and well done. It's a simple tool to use: Find a flat solid surface and place/attach the splitter. Place your small log to break into kindling on top of the wedge. Smack the log with a hammer or the back of your axe, and it should, in theory, burst apart making for easy to burn pieces. However, for me, it really wasn't what I was hoping for. I don't really need help breaking down kindling as a hatchet will typically break apart pieces of wood fast enough for my needs. I was I was hoping for was to be able to use it to start the splitting process for slightly larger pieces so that I could finish them with an axe. Unfortunately, even with a blow from a short handled 10lb sledgehammer couldn't get it to bite deep enough to start the splitting process on some 4" in diameter oak. I realize that oak is a hard wood, and I wasn't thinking it would split it in twain, but I couldn't even get it to start. Now, I'm not going to ding this product for more a star over something that is outside of its intended use, but I was a bit disappointed. For those wanting a safe and quick way to break apart really small dry logs for burning, I think this will do wonderfully. Just keep in mind it isn't a real force multiplier. ... show more

  • really makes my work easier,
Size: Small
at first I ordered this out of curiosity but after I used it it turned out that it really made my work easier for splitting wood, this tool has thick and sturdy iron, I think at this price for something this good it's really very cheap.

  • Functional and effective.
Size: High
First off, I like the size of this splitter. The height is pretty good once it's mounted on something and the width of the ring works for moderately sized split logs. I recommend four anchors instead of the two it is prepared for and I strongly recommend a heavier duty anchor than what they sent. Mine had a deflection in the blade on arrival, but it still worked as designed. ... show more

  • Works great, takes a few hits on super hard oak logs
Size: High
The media could not be loaded. Original review: I love this kindling cracker, I have always wanted one and I would definitley recommend this one. The construction is very sturdy, all of the bars are solid steel (no thin tubing or anything) and all of the welds are well done. I screwed it down onto an old log I had, and immediately put it to the hardest test I could manage...a very dry old piece of oak about 4in in diameter that I wanted to split into kindling. It took a few hits with my hammer, but it split it no problem. I put some pictures of how nicely it split up the oak branch into small kindling sticks. I then tested out some easier pecan wood and it only took one strong hit to completely split a large piece of firewood, then one hit on each of those split pieces to further split them into smaller kindling. You can see in the video how one solid hit with a hammer split the pecan wood cleanly. This will live next to my chiminea or fire pit forever along with my 4lb hammer, and I expect my axe will be collecting rust from now on. Update 11/1/23: A minor thing I noticed, I wanted to take this off the log it was on and mount it on a couple of pressure treated 4x4's for portability (camping, take to my buddy's house, etc.). This only has 2 screw holes in the feet, so if you want to mount it on separate pieces of wood they will move around. It would be better if there were 4 screw holes in the feet...I drove a couple screws on either side of the foot to make it more stable. Also I was originally using a 4lb hammer which works ok, but a 6lb hammer works much better for super hard wood like oak. The ligher hammer is great for easy splitting wood like pine, cedar, pecan. ... show more

  • This thing is nifty
Size: High
I love the concept of this! It’s been really helpful for having my son help split wood. It’s pretty fool proof and does the job. Just keep in mind they only certain size logs can go in it and it’s rather small. I’d say its sole purpose would be kindling and nothing more. It also, is not very sharp at all. Im It sure if it’s supposed to be but I think I’ll sharpen it. I do wish it was a bit bigger but that’s just because it’s a breeze to use, I’d like one for even bigger logs. It’s heavy and seems well made, I will try and come back and update this to see how it holds up through this winter. ... show more

  • Simple to use!
Size: Small
I did not think I was going to like this since it had 2 legs instead of a larger round bottom and a dull blade. It actually works great! I have a larger version of this with a sharp blade and round bottom. It was amazing that the dull blade cut just as well as my other one with the sharp blade! The two legs have holes where you can screw them down if wanted but as you can see from my picture, I just set it on my steps and it did not move much at all. I used a small sledge hammer so I didn't have to hit it hard at all. The opening is smaller, 6", but you only get a couple more inches on the large ones. I like this tool comes put together and ready to use out of the box. Much nicer that it is welded together so no screws. You will have to use a log or split piece of wood not larger than 6 inches. This unit would for sure be my choice to take camping since it is about half the weight of the larger ones. I easily made a number of perfect pieces of kindling. This is so much safer and faster than an axe. The price is right also. I recommend this splitter. ... show more
