  • Inexpensive – and you get what you paid for!
Size: 2.6 cu.ft
This is a hard review to write. On one hand, the safe is pretty much junk. It is a mistake even to call it a safe. A minimally skilled attacker could open it in under a minute. On the other hand, it is really inexpensive. So, it might be unfair to compare it to a real safe that costs five times more. I will try to adjust my expectations and give you just the facts. You can then decide for yourself if this “safe” is right for you. The Good The safe arrived well packed and in good condition. Setup was easy and everything worked as it should. The safe looks and feels solid and is nicely finished inside and out. I took the panel off the door and inspected the boltwork. It looked pretty good in there. The mechanical portion is nicely designed and assembled. Clearly not as robust as commercial safe but good enough. In a pry attach I think the frame and door will yield long before the bolts give out. The Bad The safe is flimsy and the fire proofing is thin. The manufacture does not mention on their website how thick the steels is on the door or body, so you can assume it’s paper thin. Likewise, in a real fire the fireproofing is probably worthless. Another problem is the red reset button on the side of the door. Pushing the button resets the lock so you can change the combination. A common exploit, frequently demonstrated on YouTube, is to wiggle a coat hanger around the edge of the door and push the button. The manufacturer, Primetal Safe, knows about the problem, and on their website they have a picture of the safe door with a plastic cover shielding the button. My safe arrived without the cover. When I emailed Primetal customer support asking for the missing part, they emailed me back saying that they no-longer include the cover with the safes. (To their credit however, they did respond to my email within a day, which I appreciate.) The Ugly The electronic portion of the lock is rudimentary and is attached to the back of the door with double sided tape! When I took the back panel off the door, I found the electronic board was unstuck and sitting on the boltwork, where it would eventually get damaged when the safe opened and closed. I fix the problem. If you buy this safe, I recommend you inspect yours for the same defect. My Opinion The best use for this safe is as a visual deterrent, or better, as a decoy safe. It’s fine for storing low values items and things you don’t want to misplace. It makes a great gun safe. But under no circumstances should you expect it to keep anyone from opening it -- quickly and easily. That said, except for a lock picking attack, any other attempt to open the safe will leave signs that it was tampered with. For some people that may be enough. Conclusion Three stars. I would have given it four, but I had to deduct a star for the loose electronics board, which was a serious defect. ... show more

  • Decent Quality, Fantastic Value
My family's safe situation has become less-than-ideal recently. We used to cram everything (documents, passports, unused credit cards, etc.) into one of those small briefcase-style fireproof chests. Years later, keeping that little chest organized has become nearly impossible, so my spouse gave her blessing to purchase a bigger safe that would give us plenty of growing room. I was 100% certain about 3 things - First, it had to offer meaningful fire and water protection. Second, it had to have a passcode lock because we want to set our own code rather than memorize a random combination. And third, after reading plenty of horror stories about other safe brands being rendered inoperable after just months due to electronic failures, it HAD to come with backup keys. The more I searched, I wasn't certain I would ever find something that met all 3. Then I found the AEGIS line. My first thought was "this sounds too good to be true", but I decided to take a chance. The safe arrived in pretty basic packaging, but hey - it's a safe, right? All corners were reinforced with molded plastic corner pieces and the entire door side was protected with styrofoam, so that's a plus. The keys were bagged and taped inside of a cutout in the styrofoam. The keys are small, nondescript brass keys that don't mention anything about being for a safe, which I appreciate. The key slot is hidden by a removable plastic cover that snaps on easily and takes a little force to slide off. The key mechanism is reasonably smooth and I could feel pins setting as I inserted the key, which reassures me that it's not just a blank lock. Once you fully insert the key and turn it, you can feel the lock mechanism release and you're able to turn the handle and release the deadbolts. Every surface on the inside of the safe is finished with a felt fabric, including the door. The shelf rails are metal with metal screws, but are fastened to the inside with what appear to be plastic anchors. I'm not thrilled about that, but the shelves seemed to hold weight just fine. Aside from having to tighten two of the screws, it was very straightforward to set the included shelf pins to the desired spacing. I noticed that the inside door panel is secured to the door with four screws, so I took off the inside panel to inspect the locking mechanism inside the door. I'm very impressed with the engineering of the locking mechanism and the key override. With the exception of the plastic handle, the locking mechanism appears to be all metal. The key override is a very simple mechanism that moves a latch on the inside to allow the handle to turn and the pins to retract. I chose to apply some household oil to the components to prevent the mechanism from seizing up later on - a common complaint I've read in reviews of other brands. I applied oil to each of the components and actuated the lock several times to distribute it. It worked great out of the box but feels even better now. The inside of the door cavity is empty safe for some fireproof material on the exterior side, and I'm not entirely sure how well it is fireproofed compared to the rest of the shell. I'm considering buying some fire sealant caulk or some other fireproofing material and applying it inside the door for extra peace of mind. I don't know if this safe necessarily *needs* that, but that's just my own paranoid thought process. Regardless of the true fire resistance, you would still be wise to buy a fireproof document bag and put that inside of the safe as well for even greater protection. Overall, I am highly impressed with the engineering of the AEGIS safe, and very happy with the price I paid for it. It is by no means a bank vault - but for a no-frills 2.6cu.ft. fireproof safe, it's still a tremendous value. ... show more

  • Happy With My Purchase
Size: 2.6 cu.ft
I am happy with my safe purchase. I started my search by looking for a safe with at least 2 cubic feet and it had to be fireproof. It did not need to be waterproof since I do not live in a floodplain. I did not want a safe with a lot of electronics like a digital screen (just more things to break). My new safe had to be have the ability to be bolted to the wall or floor. The AEGIS safe checked all the boxes for me and for a good value too when compared to like-safes! The safe is very easy to use, feels strong and sturdy and weighs around 60 pounds. The only down side is the inside smells awful. I don't know why since the material is all new. Overall, a good purchase for the price! ... show more

  • Excellent piece of mind and value
Size: 1.2 cu.ft
We were looking for something for stashing cash, jewelry and important documents ... something a little larger than the typical hotel safe. This definitely fits that bill, and it offers some fire resistance as well. Highly recommended.

  • Fit the Bill for a Safe
Size: 1.2 cu.ft
My youngest son recently moved out on his own and he was accustomed to keeping certain things in my home safe. He asked for a safe for his birthday and one of the things that was most important to him was that it was fire-proof. Being a pilot, he likes to keep his log-books, passport, birth certificate and valuables in a safe, and this 30 minute fire rating was important. In 2005, our family had a house fire where our home was lost, and that left a lasting impression on him. His log-books and passport are important to him as a pilot and this gives him the peace of mind their stored safely. It seems well-built, its easy to program a combination and the shelf makes keeping things sorted easier. I'm quite happy with the purchase and so was my son. ... show more
