This set allows me to make two 16.5 pound dumbbells, which is enough to get the blood circulating. I'll add more later, and they can be any weights, they don't have to match the set. Provided were 4 0.75 kg platters and 4 2.5 kg platters (not 8 1.25 kg platters as per the product description) which could be better or worse, actually it's not bad because the dumbbells have limited length and while one could fit three weights on it, it would fill most of it. The 0.75's screw onto the bar and serve the purpose of collars. If you don't use them you need the other provided collars, of which there are also 4 sets. The 2.5's just slide over the bar. The dumbbell bars weigh just under 0.75kg apiece. The barbell connector weighs 0.6 kg. To make the barbell, first make complete dumbbells of equal weight, then twist them into the center padded connecting bar. So you can make two dumbbells of 2x0.75 + 2x2.5 + 0.75 = 6.5 + 0.75 = 7.25kg each, or one barbell of 2 x 7.25kg + 0.6 kg = 15.1 kg. I will eventually add more weight to the set, and any weights should do, even iron platters, just slide on the bar. I like the plastic coated bar and padded barbell (a little safer if it drops on you), but iron platters can be slid on; I assume the hole size is fairly standard but I don't know for sure. ... show more

This free weight dumb bell set has a very unique design. I like the fact that the poles have screw type ends. The large weights slide right on. The smaller weights screw on, just like the securing nuts. Once you get the concept, it is a very easy to use set. I like that I can save space by placing each piece in my drawers. The middle bar connects the 2 dumbells, and has a soft comfortable feel to it, it feels like a padding. This set surely functions well and it has impressed me beyond original sets with metal. It certainly is a great value for the money, I'd expect to pay more just because of its different design, but your actually paying less. 5 stars! ... show more

Im on of those people who have a gym membership and never go unless its for the stair master. I like to go for my 45 minutes on the track and do my sit ups at home. These weights are about the weight of my son and you can have them as a pair or put them in one. I like having both options.
