Description

A new edition of this bestseller, updated and expanded to include watches from 2020One small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind and an extraordinary destiny for the watch that accompanied Man's first steps on the Moon, thereby becoming the greatest icon in watchmaking history: the Omega Speedmaster “Moonwatch”. Introduced to the public by Omega in 1957, the Speedmaster was designed for mainly sporting purposes, such as in motor racing. However, its fate took a completely different turn in the early 1960s. Astronauts going to space, some of whom wore a Speedmaster for private use, wanted to be officially equipped with a reliable, accurate and resistant watch. For this reason, NASA undertook a series of rigorous tests in extreme conditions in 1964 to select the best chronograph to accompany them on their space missions. The Omega Speedmaster won these tests and was officially certified (“Flight Qualified for All Manned Space Missions”) by NASA on March 1, 1965 for the Gemini project. It was in July 1969 that it truly made history, serving the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) for man's first steps on the Moon. This book retraces an extraordinary epic and the evolution of a unique and timeless watch which, from its beginnings in 1957 through to the current models, has remained endlessly fascinating. Updated and expanded to include watches from 2020. Read more

  • A great, reasonably priced book on the Omega Speedmaster Professional
Watch books tend to be absurdly expensive, and while this one isn't cheap, it's a lot less expensive than the same publisher's definitive Speedy reference work, Moonwatch Only (currently available at $769 from third parties - fortunately being reprinted at year end). This isn't a hardcore reference book, it's more a summary of the history of the Speedmaster, the history of the US space program, and how they interact (along with a brief summary of all Speedmaster models). Lots of photos, great presentation. Only one nit - on p.86, there's a reference to Dave Scott wearing his Speedy Pro on the moon on the Apollo 15 mission - actually, his Speedy broke on the mission and he used his personal Bulova chronograph prototype, the only non-Speedmaster worn on the moon, which sold in 2013 for $1.3 million and led Bulova to release the excellent Lunar Pilot. That's a minor point, otherwise the book is outstanding and well worth the price - which is high by most standards, but a bargain for a watch book. ... show more

  • Good Alternative to the Omega Reference Work
So, I was looking to buy the Moon Watch book that the Omega Authorized Distributors have in the stores. When I visited my local authorized reseller, the associate let me know that they do not sell them, but will provide them for people who purchase a specific class of watch (interpret this as not just an expensive Omega watch, but a REALLY expensive Omega Watch). I had looked up some official books on eBay and they were in the $300-$500 range. Not quite the dollar amount I wanted to spend on Dad’s Father’s Day gift. When I saw this one listed on Amazon, I was quite excited. The price is reasonable and I was willing to take the risk. I wish I would have read a little more reviews or even descriptions of the book. The reference book at the stores is a large coffee table book. Think 16” x 16”. The book I received was smaller, closer to 9” x 9”. Not quite reference work size. The actual content is good. I appreciate getting more information about the watch and understanding the models and history. Some great photos and intriguing stories. It will end up being a good gift, but I would still love to be able to score the real thing for the same price. I might be dreaming though! ... show more
