  • Lots of tools for the money, obviously not top quality, but still worked fine on aluminum.
Size: 80 pc Metric and SAE
I needed to make some new holes in an aluminum wall mount for a camera, they used M4 0.7 screws. When I got this kit, I was a bit skeptical since the tap for the M4 looked a little rough and inconsistent... the bigger taps looked better, but M4 is pretty small. But I gave it a go, using cutting oil, and it DID work to make holes my screws could go into! Keeping in mind I knew I was using these on aluminum, which is fairly soft as far as metals go. I would hesitate to use this on stainless steel or something harder, but for aluminum it worked out fine. The center punch it came with is nice, and overall it is very good value for the money. Tool quality is less than 5* but for what you get and the price, I'll give it 5*, this should not be compared to kits costing hundreds of dollars. ... show more

  • Did the job, has some drawbacks
Size: 80 pc Metric and SAE
I get a bit detailed here but you might learn something about this set. I needed to tap some thin bar stock for a repair. I never had a complete set of taps and dies since when I was in the automotive and heavy equipment repair fields the different shops I worked in bought them for us. That is definitely unusual in most shops. Since I had experience but didn't want to break the bank I was looking for an inexpensive fairly complete set of metric and SAE threading tools. This kit came highly reviewed here but is not a top quality one, as some others said the tap handle is loose and I reckon the die handle would be too. The carrying cases will keep the components in the box but they don't snap in place; keep the thin sheet of foam so the case holds the components in better than it would without. I'm thinking about gluing the foam to the lid. There is no tap and drill chart nor a chart for cutting threads on bar stock included so you have to look it up elsewhere, and you do need to have a good 115-piece lettered, numbered and fractionated drill bit set to complete a quality job. For example, the 5/16 by 18 tap requires a letter F drill bit to complete a quality 75% thread cut. I feel that would hold thread locking compound if needed. The only pipe thread tap and die in the SAE set is 1/8 NPT, it would be nice if it included at least a 1/4 NPT set. The 5/16 by 18 tap doesn't have the size printed on it (I haven't examined the rest of the sizes) but experience helped. There are no bottoming taps included so the set wouldn't work well for blind holes. If you don't force it, countersink the threads a bit (I used a 5/8 bit by teasing my drill trigger) to clear away burrs and add some relief to make threading the bolt easier, work with nothing harder than mild steel, use plenty of oil (It didn't take a crazy amount) and turn back and forth regularly (sometimes meeding a full turn) to clear out the metal chips it'll suit general use. ... show more

  • Dull taps, visible wear after one use in aluminum
Size: 80 pc Metric and SAE
I previously owned a few milwaukee taps and wanted to expand my collection, the old adage "you get what you pay for (despite the Amazon rating being above 4.0) seems to ring true. Upon arrival I tried a M8 1.0 tap in some predrilled 4040 extruded aluminum and was shocked at how much more difficult and strenuous it was compared to what i remember from the Milwaukees. I know aluminum gums up, but even after cleaning it off the threads were visibly worn after one hole, and so was I. I will give the product this; I thought I was going to break the collet or something twisting on it, and it did not break. Just to be sure it wasn't just that particular tap, I grabbed a 5/16 18 tap, because I owned the milwaukee counterpart. For every 2 turns of the milwaukee I got before needing to back out, I'd get about a quarter of a turn with this. That is with all other variables I could think of held constant. Maybe it does better in other materials, and the milwaukee taps do seem to have alot more reliefs notched in them, but I cant recommend this product for my particular task. The center punch is nice though, I lost my old one so that was a handy suprise. ... show more

These will work fine for light duty use. They are not top quality but for this price I didn’t expect them to be.
