This is great and I highly recommend this yarn winder! I bought a yarn winder for slightly less from a large craft chain store. And it is OK. But I decided to give this one a try because I wanted one that cakes the yarn at an angle, thinking it would be less likely to slide off than the one I bought previously. There are plenty of high end yarn winners that cost significantly more money. And I'm sure some of them are worth the cost, but I know not all of them are worth the higher cost, wakefulness since this one works so well. Pros: really smooth crank so the yarn winds smoothly, yarn stays on during the caking process and none slipped off the top of the cake, cake holds together really well after being removed (something not true with my other winder) Cons: the way it attaches to my table is more fiddly than necessary but this is a very minor inconvenience Make sure to keep decent tension on the yarn while it's feeding into the winder. Poor technique will sink any yarn winder no matter the quality. Definitely give this winder a shot as it has been great for me. ... show more

    • This is a life saver!!
Gone are the days that I have to hand wind middle-pull yarn cakes! I used to spend hours hand winding my own cakes with a large dowel, every single time I bought yarn (that wasn't already caked.) This took me all of 3 minutes to put together and clamp to my desk. From there, I spent maybe 3 hours going through all of my yarn, scraps and full skeins, and wound them all. I may just buy more yarn just so I can turn it into cakes! It's super easy to use, literally just thread some yarn into the metal hook, hold a little tension and wind it up! It's also fairly inexpensive for the amount of hours this is going to save me any time I get more yarn. It's so easy, and it makes me feel insane for spending an hour+ on hand winding single skeins by hand! I would give this 100 stars if I could. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. This is a decent yarn winder for a beginner or someone who doesn't need a yarn winder on a daily basis. Do make sure you have a tabletop that is under 1.77 inches if you want to use the clamp. I'm going to continue using this as needed, a few times a month, and I'll update this review if I have any issues with it. This yarn winder works very simply, as you can see in my video. You apply tension with your hand to the yarn feeding the spool, which determines how tightly the yarn cake is wound. The unit itself doesn't wobble or tilt, at least not that I've experienced, though if you go too fast you might have trouble making sure you keep the yarn tension steady. Personally, the light weight of the unit, plus the cheap feeling plastic (you know the kind), don't make me confident that this will withstand years of use, nor be suitable for seasoned professionals. I would invest in a yarn winder with a higher quality of materials if your needs are those of a professional or if you need to make yarn cakes more regularly than someone who dabbles or a beginner, though. The unit is very light, so if you need to attach it to a portable surface like I had to for the video, you can; that could be considered a pro or a con. It makes it very easy to bring around with you, wherever you go, which is nice, and it's easy to take apart and put back in the box. It does, however, lend to the "this feels cheap" aspect of it. At this price point, I am satisfied with it doing exactly what it says in the description, with no obvious objective flaws. As stated, I'll update my review if I encounter any issues with it. I only review items that I personally use myself on a regular and continued basis. I always give my full, honest, unbiased and unfiltered opinion on everything I review. I will not mince words. I write exactly what I think about a product - the good, the bad, the ugly, and the questionable. This Yarn Winder is very easy to assemble and use. My only challenge was finding a surface I could attach it to because all of my tables have some sort of facing board under the top which prevents using clamps. In my whole house, the only place I can use this is on a small section of my kitchen island where there is no board blocking the space for the clamp. Once I set it up, the winder worked perfectly. It was easy to thread the yarn through the guide arm and eye. I held it down on the spindle for a few rotations until the starting piece was anchored on the spindle/peg. I was able to wind a regular skein of worsted weight yarn into a cake on this winder. It was even better for making cakes with remnants. My ONLY gripe is the handle is also plastic, so care will need to be taken not to drop or bump it. ... show more
