I am a beginner/intermediate level crocheter and have been crocheting for about 2-3 years now and I was just getting so sick of working out of skeins. This tool makes my yarn into perfect cakes that are so easy to work out of without tangling the yarn. I just clip it to my coffee table and use my hand to support the yarn being fed into the cake and it works just fine. It also makes much larger cakes than I expected it to, such as a roll of bernat baby blanket yarn. I liked everything about this product except for one. The metal pin that guides the yarn onto the ball kept moving and falling down it would not stay in place. Other than that I really like it it does what it's supposed to do.

It does what it says it does. I had some trouble with the metal yarn guide because the slightest pull to the left and it completely falls so I have to hold it with my hand and you can’t do rolls that are more than 200 yards because it will get tangled and you’ll have to wrap it by hand to finish it off.     • Frustrating to use, makes loose cakes.
I’ve always kind wound my yarn from skeins, but my husband kindly purchased this yarn cake winder for me for Mother’s Day. It is incredibly disappointing. It vaguely works but the piece of metal that is supposed to keep the yarn attention slips and flops more than a politician, it’s completely useless. I have to hold a yarn in my left hand, trying to keep some tension while winding it with my right. Considering that I’m blind, this is pretty damn depressive! Resultant cake of yarn is too squishy. Cello you crocheters and knitters will understand what I mean but this object creates a yarn cake that is so loose that it falls apart in my yard basket. He’s a complete waste of money. Why did they give it three stars? I did but it said it with you, even though it did it poorly just like a politician. ... show more

The brown yarn was my first attempt. I didn’t keep tension as I was winding and it went all over the place and probably got less than 200 yards wound. (It is a fluffier yarn but 4 weight) same brand, weight, and type but different color (teal) was second attempt and kept tighter tension-got much more wound before running out of room and snagging on the rod. Those were both about 380yards. The third pic is a 4 weight non fluffy and 250 yards. Easy as pie!!! Wound in maybe 20 sec!!! 10/10 recommend this product! If it breaks I will edit but so far it has saved soooo much time and the cakes are so easy to use while crocheting!!! I will say that a lot of people had issues with the rod but if you pull it out hard enough it will lock into place and not move AT ALL. Just took a few min to figure out how hard I needed to pull on it to get it to lock (I honestly felt like I was pulling on it hard enough to break it but it needed to be pulled out far enough to lock in place.) ... show more

I am a long time yarn person my old yarn winder wore out and I thought I would buy a cheap one. Don’t do that. The yarn gets caught underneath and has to be cut out. Very flimsy, the winder wobbled, the holding arm will not stay in place. I am returning it asap. I bought the more expensive one. This one is metal instead of plastic and can’t wait for it to arrive as I have a bunch of yarn to wind. ... show more

It is so cool to watch a skein of yarn turn into a neat cake with symmetrical lines and easy center-pull. I use this tool to cake all my yarn that doesn't already come caked. It feels a little flimsy because the take-up arm has to be locked into place before you start cranking. Pull it all the way out until it clicks and you're good to go! ... show more
