  • If people say their bikes fell off then they must be special
I was worried about people claiming their bikes fell off but I have put hundreds of miles and I recently did a trip from Baltimore to New Haven through the crappy NYC highways. I went over bumps, ran over potholes, had to avoid dumb drivers. All with my 35lb full suspension mtn bike on my roof and yes it sways a little bit over bumps but I’d argue that helps disperse the force on your roof rack system. This thing is awesome and it hasn’t failed for me once. If you installed your roof rack securely and correctly and you tighten this securely you should have zero issues. If you have a lighter bike like a road bike you can prob take it to the track and race with it on because I don’t see this thing ever failing on me Oh and you don’t have to take the front wheel off 🤙 ... show more

  • This is great if you're looking for roof-mounted rack
I drive a mid-size SUV. After using a strap-type rear-mounted bike rack for years, I finally decided to go with something more permanent. To me, the strap-type rear-mounted rack (which was very secure after installation) took too much time to install and properly tension, not to mention tying off the ends of the straps so they wouldn't flap around while driving. In addition, I did not like losing access to my rear hatch while the rear-mounted rack was in place. So, I researched some roof-mounted racks and settled on the Yakima Front Loader. I like the perceived security of roof-mounted racks where the front fork of the bike attaches to the rack, but I didn't like the idea of having to take my front wheel off each time I put the bike on the rack and having my front wheel sliding around in the back of the car while I was driving. For the Front Loader, the front wheel stays on the bike. Over time I have gotten more comfortable knowing the bike is secure when driving on interstate highways or other high wind conditions. To me, the biggest disadvantage is getting the bike on and off of the rack. I typically use a road bike so it is relatively light. Even so, I ended up building a step stool, about 8 inches high, and that extra height makes all the difference in getting my bike on and off the rack. I keep the step stool in the back of my car. All in all, I am very happy with this rack; plus I get to keep the rack on my car all the time and I am able to open my rear hatch whenever I need to! ... show more

  • You can't beat this bike rack!
This is hands down the best roof rack out there. I timed myself, I can have the bike on the car and secure in less than 60 seconds. Been using these racks for years, and I'm always pleased with how simple they are to use. Just don't be like me and forget it's on top of your car when you pull into your garage and you'll be just fine. ... show more

  • Easy no tool installation
I bought 2 of these to install on my popup camper roof rack (pro rac). Installation was easy and took maybe 5 minutes, seems like it would fit a large variety of roof racks as its very adjustable. I have other yakima bike racks and I think the quality for price paid is very good. I really didn’t want to have to remove the front tires of the bikes so glad this product works and fits my rack. ... show more

  • This thing is pretty cool
YAKIMA is really on to something here. I drive a Volvo SUV and recently bought an above average grade mountain bike. So for the past few weeks I had been researching bike racks for my vehicle. Dropping my back and rear seats down, removing the bike tire, and popping the bike in the trunk was not a viable long term solution. I thought I would buy a rear loading exterior mount, and the problem would be solved. After some research many people complained of paint wear, scratches, and rust created from where the rubber coated hooks touch the vehicle paint. I crossed rear mount off my list. Unfortunately, my vehicle does not have a tow bar, but I looked into installing one. It was not extremely expensive for the value, but I could not justify spending $600 plus on installation, and another $200 on a nice rear bike rack that attached to a hitch. Lastly, I looked into roof mounts. Most were flimsy or required you to remove the wheel. This was barely a step up from putting the bike in the trunk. So I kept looking. YAKIMA - Front Loader Wheel-On Mount Upright Bike Carrier for Roof Racks came in my search. The reviews seemed good, and the locking mechanism was interesting. The package arrived on time, in good shape, and the product is 99.99% assembled. You can use it out of the box depending on your area, but I recommend buying the YAKIMA - SKS Lock Cores Car Rack System Components. This rack has two lock slots. The locks are easy to install, and set up where you can use one key for both locks. Roof installation is pretty easy. The difficulty is only aligning it properly in relationship to your vehicle's cross bar locations. The rack is sturdy. I have a larger mountain bike. Its a 19 inch frame with 29 inch tires. The rack handled it perfectly, and it was snug as I drove to the bike path. On to the Cons: Although, the locks are nice they are not heavy duty security. The main lock will deter people from stealing your YAKIMA roof bike rack, but the second cable lock to protect your bike is thin, and would easily be cut with wire snips. If you have a somewhat expensive bike you probably want a more expense bike lock if you are going to leave you bike on the roof. Getting your bike in the rack! I mentioned I drive an SUV. I am 6 feet tall, train daily, and can pretty easily lift my 100 pound bike over my head. That being said, it takes a little practice lifting the bike up onto the rack. If you are petite and/or vertically challenged, loading your bike might require a step stool. Even with my size advantage, I need to open my rear door, and step on the door sill to load my bike. Again, I drive an SUV. Clearance! You have a bike on your roof. When in use, I have to make sure I remember I have an extra few feet atop my car. If you are forgetful this might not be the rack for you. I can see people driving home on their phones and trying to pull into their garage with a bike on their roof. Oof! All and all I am happy with my purchase. If things change I will update my review. HAPPY RIDING! ... show more
