  • Tips included... Because, eff, winding yarn can be frustrating AF
A hand crank yarn winder is a great tool for any knitter or crocheter. It is a simple, affordable, and versatile device that can help you save time and energy. This one serves that exact purpose and was the lowest price one I could find. It's very heavy and durable too. Here are some tips for using a hand crank yarn winder: Use a smooth, even tension when winding the yarn. This will help to prevent the yarn from becoming tangled or knotted. If the yarn is starting to get tangled or knotted, stop winding and gently untangle it. Be sure to wind the yarn in the correct direction. Most yarn winders have a direction indicator that tells you which way to turn the crank. If you are winding a large amount of yarn, take breaks every 30 minutes or so to rest your hands. With a little practice, you will be able to use a hand crank yarn winder like a pro! ... show more

  • We love this thing!
Just add some sort of thick grease to the gear and it holds up very well, just be careful with your yarn touching it. That’s why thick gear grease works well, we tried wd40 and it would fly everywhere. And it dried up fast. Petroleum jelly worked really good. And every now and then you might have to tighten the nuts and screws on it. Or take them part and add some thread locker when you reinstall the screws. ... show more

  • Easy & Sturdy, I Guess
I had to have 2 of these delivered because the first arrived without the large wire yarn guide in packaging that had seen better days. Also, I suppose the seller/manufacturer has decided the set-up and use is self-explanatory because no directions for anything were included. YouTube is a wonderful thing. I've wound about 5 skeins of yarn and it works great. I think any downsides of using it have to do with the limitations of any yarn winder, not this one in particular, like having the yarn wrap around the top of the spool instead the yarn ball when going slowly or when you start up again after detangling yarn coming from the skein. The large wire guide rattles a lot on the table while you're winding, so I taped it to the table a little to give it a little added support and use my hand to help guide the yarn from the skein into the wire guide. The metal gears look like they'd last forever and move pretty smoothly (I may add a little silicone to help it truly glide - I haven't decided yet). I'm happy I purchased it and would recommend it. ... show more

  • Not the one.
If you look at my photos, I ordered the one with the rod and coupling and got the one with just a bent rod. This matters to me since I bought it to make an add-on part that fits there specifically. The one I got is not very well made. The gears are rough and bind up at certain times where two points on two of the gears meet. If you push hard enough, you can push through it, but it almost comes off the table I have it mounted to. I have added some lithium bearing grease to the gear to make it a little smoother, but that's done very little to improve it. The gears are just sand cast with no finishing at all, so they are very rough. ... show more

  • Easy to use, very sturdy, you need this!!
The media could not be loaded. I go this winder and I am extremely impressed with it! I'm never rolling yarn balls again 😂. Pros: Sturdy Easy to use Fast Great quality Is already assembled out the box Cons: A little loud No rubber pads on clamp (make sure to use something between the winder and table to avoid scratches) No instructions (extremely easy to figure out + youtube is your friend) Overall I 100% recommend this winder, i tried some skeins just to see and one thing i noticed is that when you're winding the yarn make sure you're holding the yarn coming from the skein with your other hand. It's always good to put slight tension on the yarn to keep it from getting tangled. I make rugs and having my yarn made into cakes instead of the regular skein is a game changer when using a tufting gun. Less knots, even tension when pulling from the cake and I'm able to make two cakes out of one 500g skein. Update: I also tried this winder with my chunky and extra chunky yarn and had no problems at all!! I'll be buying a few more winder so my wife and kids can join 😜 ... show more

  • Winding up my yarn cakes is easy peasy.
I purchased this yarn winder after purchasing a 13 gallon trash bag full of hanks of "real" yarns; you know...the kind that comes from alpaca, sheep, and other 4 legged friends that share their lovely coats with us grateful fiber arts purists. But I digress, and since I needed to find out how to organize my goodies I began to research all things yarn winders and swifts. I wanted durability and ease of use, something that I could use for a couple hours at a time without too much fatigue, and most of all produce consistent cakes - whether I used 2 oz of yarn or 10 oz. And I didn't want to spend over $40. This machine hits all the marks: one night I used it for over 2 1/2 hours with no problems, after the first couple of skeins of yarns (my trial runs) whether comes out beautifully, and my husband likes to watch me do it. The only "CON" is that the metal gears make a grinding(?) noise as you turn the wheel but it's really not that loud. I think it is a great value for the money-an all metal winder with no plastic parts to break. ... show more

  • Good but not the best
The winder is a good purchase for someone who loves cakes of yarn. My old one was plastic and the gears didn't last me long so I decided to go metal. I got this one thinking it would hold up for my massive amounts of yarn that I cake on a daily basis. I’ve used it twice and I’ve gotten a lot of shards of metal as well as the gears are starting to diminish and get stuck. Sometimes it would either get stuck or it would skip. I didn’t want to give up so I was able to change the gears by tightening the bolts, and it seem to have helped. However, the shards of metal coming off are still happening and it is a little bit of a hazard. The Winder cakes up yarn really well. And has no problem kicking up my large skins. If I could go back, I probably would have chosen a different one but I don't feel like returning as I need this constantly. ... show more
