I bought one of those smaller plastic winders before this one and it irreparably broke within like a day of use. This one is larger than I probably need, but the gears are metal and exposed, so it's sturdier, and if it does break I may be able to fix it. Make sure you have a table suitable for it though. I really wanted this to work, I’ve been looking for a larger yarn winder but this one just didn’t cut it. The crank was very clunky and did not turn smoothly. No matter how tightly I secured it to my countertop, it didn’t stay in place while winding. Easy to figure where all the parts go. The vice for hold on counter, never got tight enough to make stable. Tried silicon mat to protect counter, add stability. That didn’t work, and it was ripped. Guide arm mount to base couldn’t be tightened enough to keep from moving. It’s a two handed product. One for cranking, one for stabilizing base and guide arm.
