  • Comprehensive Diagnostics from the Xtool D8S
I bought this to support multiple vehicles in the family. One of the standout features of the Xtool D8S is its extensive vehicle coverage. It supports diagnostics for a wide range of makes and models, including both domestic and foreign vehicles. The tool can read and clear trouble codes from all major systems, such as the engine, transmission, ABS, and airbag systems. Another major reason I bought this tool is the availability to view modules in Topology view which can be very helpful in identifying and narrowing your focus in troubleshooting. This function is normally available in tools costing twice as much. the D8S has 38 special functions. One function I was intersted in was Key Programming and couldn't find it. I reached out to support and they responded within 24hrs and informed me that it is now located under the IMMO Reset special function. I was very happy to hear that and with the prompt response. Considering its features and capabilities, the Xtool D8S is competitively priced in the market. It offers excellent value for DIY home mechanics looking to invest in a reliable diagnostic tool without breaking the bank. Pros: - Wide vehicle coverage - Comprehensive diagnostic capabilities - User-friendly interface - Fast performance with live data - Competitive pricing -Three years of free updates Cons: - Not any that I can find so far. ... show more

  • A capable scan tool, at a reasonable price, with excellent customer support
I am not a professional mechanic, but consider myself a competent DIY mechanic. I’ve had this scan tool for about two weeks. There are many things I like about this tool, and very little to dislike. First, the user interface takes a bit of getting used to, but with practice it gets easier. FWIW, it’s based on an old version of the Android OS. I bought this primarily for troubleshooting a 1996 GMC Suburban that I’m restoring, but also will use it for a 2008 Chevy HHR SS, a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup, and a 2021 Honda CRV. The GMC has limited functions available, as 1996 is the first year for OBD2. This is not a limitation of the scan tool so much as a limitation of the technology in that particular vehicle. But it does what I need it to do. For example, it allowed me to diagnose a transmission issue which had been giving me fits. The inexpensive scanner that I have was not able to read any codes. The D8 does. It also reads all of the engine functions, and many of the transmission functions, as described in the GM Service Manual (of which I have a copy). I also had the opportunity to compare the D8 with a Topdon ArtiDiag900 Lite. The Topdon has some nice features, including a more modern version of Android, and costs a bit less than the D8. It also supports the same functions on the GMC as the D8. However, when I tried it on the HHR, I found that it does not support several of the functions that the D8 does. For example, it does not have any TPMS functionality. The D8 does. I assume this will be the case with with the Ford Ranger and the Honda CRV also. The D8 hardware seems pretty solid. It has an 8” screen, unlike most of its direct competitors, as well as larger battery capacity. Sometimes I wish I had gone for the BT version, but the supplied OBD2 cord is long enough to allow setting the scanner on the passenger seat, if need be. I really like the kickstand on the back, which allows hanging it on top of the steering wheel. FWIW, the Topdon’s kickstand did not. This may sound like a minor thing, but in practice it actually makes a difference. I have to say that I am very pleased with XTool’s customer service and technical support. I exchanged emails with them prior to purchasing the D8, and have continued on a couple of occasions after I made the purchase. At one point I seriously considered returning it, as one of the key functions I wanted was not supported by the D8. As it turns out, that particular function isn’t supported by the OEM scanner either. It simply wasn’t available on that year of vehicle. But after using it and seeing what it could do, on the GMC and on the newer vehicles, the responsiveness of XTool to my queries, having done a hands-on comparison with the Topdon, and reading about other scan tools in this price range, I decided to keep the D8. I expect to get a lot of use out of this, and am glad to have it among my tools. ... show more

  • Great tool for DIY & shops on a budget, great support, 3 years free software upgrades
### Long Review but worth the time to read ### ### - Summary - Really good tool for DIY & Shops on a budget, great email, phone, and remote screen sharing customer service/support, 3 years free software upgrades ### ### Detailed Review #### If you are a DIY mechanic looking for more than a basic ODBII code reader or have an automotive shop and not looking to break the bank, the XTOOL D8 is a good option and something you should consider. I saw a review for the D7 last year and was really impressed but could not justify the costs at that time. Stumbled across a discount offer (saved 25-30%) on the D8 a few weeks ago that was too good to pass up. There was also 3 years of software updates included (other products in the same space charge upward of $200 per update..yikes) with the purchase! If you have never used a pro level diagnostic tool it can be a little intimidating, but the Xtool screens/displays/menus make it easy to run automatic scans and jump into specific functions based on your needs. Depending on the age of the vehicle and on-board features, you can complete and control all kinds of tests/functions from the D8s menu system. Examples I have 4 different cars ranging from 2002 to 2020. While the computer on the 2002 may not have as many functions as the 2020, with the D8 I have full access to all the available functions/features allowed by each car. The D8 helped me we diagnose/confirm the issue with a door lock on my 2014 was the switch and not the actuator motor. It also helped me monitor the trans fluid temp while performing a transmission fluid service on the sealed transmission in the same car. While there are other ways to monitor the temp, they are less accurate and require additional steps/procedures. Key reprogramming/replacement on newer cars can be expensive. The dealers charges are not cheap, but with the D8 I can complete the replacement key programming & sync process. For use/pre-owned car owners, do you REALLY know that the dealer or seller gave you ALL the keys/phoebes sync with your cars? With the D8 you can complete a process to remove all PREVIOUS keys that were synced with the cars and only re-sync your keys/phoebes you have in hand. While the features of the D8 are important, I believe XTool's customer service/support is what separates them form other competitors with similar products. I have used their email support but have seen they have options for phone/web/remote control support (using TeamViewer on the tool). Even before you buy, you can send them questions via email or Amazon about what the tool does and what features it has. They asked for my VIN #s to provide more accurate information and replies usually came within a day. Even after I bought the D8 and had questions, they were very responsive with replies. I have read review about "similar" products and a common theme with those is that customer support is lacking, and responses are slow or not at all. Having a tool like this may be a luxury for some but in my case its paid for itself in repair diagnosis/cost savings. It even helped while looking for a used car recently. Any car we looked at, I plugged in the D8 and ran a quick scan to check codes. I could even tell if the codes were cleared recently without the emission/smog drive cycle being completed (red flag). Depending on the age of the car, I was also able to quickly jump into running some deeper tests/scans to make sure everything was in working order. Lets just say that there were more than a few cars we walked away from because of the info provided by the D8. ... show more
