  • Expensive but nice to have on hand
A product like this is not one I would buy on a normal, routine basis, but it is one I would repeat purchase without question. Sometimes when a pet becomes sick, you may not readily have plain rice and chicken on-hand to make them up a bland diet as recommended by vets. With the changes to store hours due to the pandemic, not even Wally World is open 24 hours anymore. Having a bag or two of this on the shelf is an excellent idea. You are able to make your cat (or dog) at least one meal, giving yourself time to not only make a supply run for the needed ingredients, but cook them as well. If you travel with your pet, having two or three bags in your luggage is an excellent idea as well. We often take our dog and one of our cats camping with us. Having this product with us and it being so easy to prepare is a little peace of mind. When it come to edibility, almost all of our six cats and two dogs are more than willing to nosh on the mixture. Our senior-ist cat, who is a bit of a picky eater, couldn't be bothered with even trying a bite. Once cooked, there isn't a strong smell to the rice and chicken mixture, so that might be the problem. He tends to prefer stinky foods like sardines and mackerel. For the rest of the crew this seems to be an acceptable meal. We like that it isn't pre-cooked like some human rice products you can buy. Sick pets don't need any extra additives or preservatives that could make their tummy trouble worse. Between this rice and chicken and some added pumpkin, our American Bulldog recently overcame a bout of the poops without any need to see the vet (he can't eat things like cow ears or his tummy rebels, and he snuck a bit that his brother hadn't finished chewing on yet). Feeding him a 1/2 cup the dry mix along with half a cup of his normal food and a healthy dollop of pumpkin for two days worked like a champ. One of our other cats has a dental cleaning coming up, and now that we have this package open we will make it for him afterwards since he is always a little pukey after anesthesia. The absolute only reason to buy this regularly is the cost. At $32/pound, it's cheaper by far to buy boneless chicken and brown rice (and canned or frozen plain pumpkin puree) and make your own, whether or a few meals or pre-make in bulk then portion and freeze to add to your pet's daily food if they have sensitive tummies (only on a vet's recommendation, though). Still, having a couple of bags of this on hand is something every cat and dog owner should consider doing. ... show more

  • Stacey loves! Easy to prepare
The media could not be loaded. My kitty Stacey is 10 years old and has been with me a bit over one year as a solo kitty. She -- as well as previous super-senior kitties who are now passed -- love the Whole Life freeze-dried chicken as a treat. My experience with this company's products have been very positive. So I was excited to have Stacey try their Recover formula, which is basically just human-grade chicken and rice that needs to be reconstituted. She is not having any problem at the moment, but I want to try preparing it and offering it to her to see if this is something I can give her if she is not well. She is a picky eater. It is super easy to prepare as long as you have access to boiling water. There are instructions, but basically you can make the amount you want and make it the consistency you want. It may take a little practice to see what the kitty likes. Stacey went for it right away and ate up the small amount I made for her. She did not have any ill effects at all. I'm so pleased to have this on hand for her. It's important to know that this is an interim food that does not give the kitty all the nutrition they need. If the kitty is having issues, it's important to get them to the vet. But if it is a mild issue or if you are waiting to get the kitty in to see the vet, then this is great. I would also imagine that this is great for after surgery. These are just my thoughts as a cat person -- I'm not a vet. The bag I received has a best by date 22 months in the future. I wanted to note that the date is on the strip that you tear off to open the bag -- so I had to go find it in the wastebasket and then write the date on the bag. The manufacturer might like to fix this issue! ... show more

  • My cats didn't take to it readily, despite various strategies
This is a hard product for me to review, because the cats and I had differing opinions on it! I really like the simplicity, especially since both of them have sensitive stomachs at times, and I don't always know what to do for food when they are having trouble. The smell is so good, pure, and basic--unlike lots of cat food. If it weren't cat food, I would want to try it! That being said, they weren't very willing to eat it. I tried at dinnertime, in lieu of canned cat food, and they wouldn't touch it. To try when they would be most willing to eat anything (due to their highest hunger levels during the day), I also tried it in the morning in place of their first feeding during the day. Still, with it as their only source of food, they wouldn't touch it. To try a third strategy, I added a bit of kibble on top. I watched as one of the cats very carefully worked to remove the kibble bit by bit so she could avoid this food. Someone did eat it when it was left out for a long time (they must have been very hungry), which isn't the best idea for wet food. So I think it will get eaten if they have issues with keeping food own and haven't had food in a long time. But if a cat is sick, it's better to have something they will readily eat. It's hard for me to give it a star rating since my cats wouldn't touch it until very hungry. I feel like it's the type of food that's worth a try for cats with sensitive stomachs, but it's also possible that they won't want to eat it, during a time when they need to. I'm keeping it on hand until it expires, in case one of them gets sick--it's certainly worth another try and I really appreciate the simplicity of it. ... show more
