  • You can beat this thing with a big stick without messing it up, or your beef
Lessee . . sturdy, REALLY DURABLE, well designed n built: light to carry n store, heavy enough not to flop around on the counter, easy to assemble, turn the handle, feed the meat, catch the meat, 1 pass is 5-15 seconds, and the price, while pricey compared to some, doesn't give you something that'll break in 2 years or less . . . painted aluminum housing, stainless steel hardware, stainless steel teeth, stainless steel combs to guide (work really well!!) the meat, n keep it from wrapping around the teeth, galvanized steel gears, plastic coated steel axles, plastic parts look to be nylon or delrin, read durable, I like that the throat will accept a piece of meat 5 inches or so wide, up to an inch n a quarter thick . . all parts are easy to clean up in hot soapy water . . . SO much less work and time than a hammer or a bouncy bouncy multiple knife thingy whose plastic parts die in less than a year's use . . My biggest complaint: (See photos) gimmee a plunger to push the meat down the throat of this thing . . I had to grind down a chunk of delrin into a push stick to fit the rectangular, TAPERED throat . . so the weight of the pusher forces all the small chunks down through the rotating teeth of the knives equally, and I end up with an evenly ground piece of steak, or evenly tenderized CHUNKS of stew meat . . without a pusher, the whole process is prone to wide variations in how ground different parts of the meat get . . . . bad sentence (sorry), equally bad output . . . the tongs they provide don't do the job . . WITH the pusher, everything comes out the same, oh happy day . . . most folks don't have delrin lying around their shop, nor do they have the time and the tools, and patience to custom machine a custom push stick, but how about they mold up an ABS push stick n offer it for 5-10 bucks . . I woulda bought it . . . . ... show more

  • Don't know why I waited so long to buy this
I process 3-5 deer a year myself, and the one thing I miss since I started processing my own deer is cube steaks. We use them in chili, country fried steak, schnitzel, and more, but before purchasing this, it was the old meat hammer method, which just ...well... sucks, so we did without. Turn the page to this year after purchasing the Weston Meat Cuber, and it's a whole new ballgame. As long as you don't cut the steaks too thick (more than 5/8") or too thin (less than 1/4"), this works absolutely wonderful. It takes very little effort to make cube steaks now. Drop them in one direction and run them through, then rotate the steak 90 degrees and run it through again, and you have the perfect cube steak. (Just don't forget to install the "combs" as I did on the first steak, because you'll end up with meat wrapped around one set of teeth.) ... show more

  • Essential for super-tender cube steaks!
My Mom used to take inexpensive round steak and pound the heck out of it with a sharp, heavy knife until it was well-macerated, then cut it into roughly 2" cubes, dredge them in butter, salt and pepper them, and fry them in butter. Well, margarine, it was the 1960s and we didn't know better. Anyway, she called it "cube steak" and it was one of my favorite ways to eat beef. But I hated the long, tiring process of hacking away at the meat when I was old enough to prepare it on my own. My arm would ache with the effort. But it was the only way to get the steak really, really tender. Fast forward to my adult years, and every once in a while I'd get a hankering for my Mom's version of cube steak and endure the hassle of hacking the heck out of the meat to get it to the proper consistency. And the noise! I once had a downstairs neighbor bang on my door complaining about the pounding. But there was no other way. Even store-bought cube steaks weren't tender enough for me. I'd have to hack away at those, too. Then, recently, I decided to check Amazon to see if there was something that would automate the process. So many choices! I decided on the Weston because of many positive reviews raving about the sturdiness of the gadget, how fast, easy, and efficiently it cubes meats, and, vitally important, how easy it is to take apart and clean. I am a gadget freak, but I've learned that if something is a pain to clean, it will end up shoved to the back of my bottom cupboard, never to be seen again. The reviews turned out to be perfectly true, and then some. Clamp the Weston to the edge of my counter, and it's rock-solid. Run the meat through the grinder two or three times, and it's so well-cubed that you can see peeks of daylight through it. Just what I want! Instead of chopping away for 10 minutes, it's done in seconds. I buy several packages of round steak and cube the lot, then vacuum seal meal-size portions and freeze. Saving 50 cents a pound or more over commercially-prepared cubes steaks is making the Weston pay for itself - and I was never satisfied with their consistency, anyway. I love being able to make my steaks as heavily cubed and tender as I like them. The Weston lives up to its claim of easy clean-up. Loosen a few hand-tightened screws and the whole top comes off. The rollers and guide blades slip right out and the remaining bottom and base are easy to wipe down. Meat residue seems to rinse right off of the rollers, but I squirt some dish soap on them and just twirl them around under running hot water. I suppose you could use one of those skinny bottle brushes, like they use for baby bottles, but I haven't felt the need to bother. I believe the removable components are dishwasher-safe, but I don't have a dishwasher so I can't testify to that. The heavy metal parts are coated with what seems to be a very durable painted finish. I haven't had the slightest hint of peeling, and so far I've used, and washed, my Weston more than half a dozen times. I plan to give the Weston a try with boneless pork chops and chicken breasts, too. Some people have reported great results with game meats like venison that tend to be very lean and tough. Even with tender cuts like chicken, I imagine marinades and rubs will be much more effective with the greatly increased surface area that results from cubing. All those little nooks and crannies for the good stuff to get into! You can also buy alternate grinders that will create strips for jerky. With proper care, this sturdy machine should last for years, maybe a lifetime. ... show more
