  • First tube amp, amazing sound! No need to upgrade tubes.
Color: Fawn
First off let me say that I upgraded from a 10W blackstar 120 dlls amp, which of course is a huge upgrade and over 16x the price. Yet after several years of hard work practicing I treated myself taking advantage of the 18 month payment plan on amazon. This sounds absolutely great. It comes already with good JJs tubes and not stock Chinese (as the regular AC10 seems to) so there is no need to replace tubes. The only thing I did not know was the difference between the AC15HW1 and the AC15HWX1, I would have loved to get the AC15HWX1 with the blue alnico as I play mostly clean or with some light overdrive from my boss blues for lead, and I love a more "hollow" sound, I actually play a semi-hollow gretsch 5655 for this same reason, so it kind of makes up for it anyway. Yet truth is that the average civilian doesn't really notice too much this things as much as one self getting obsessed with the sound. I play in my living room and I can get a full room of clean sound without need for higher volume, as with any amp I have seen, anything over half volume gives a static floor noise that as well you can't notice much once playing... I am wondering if the alnico blue reduces this as this comes usually with the higher/sharper/brighter sound option. Maybe I will replace the speaker in the coming years and figure it out. So far super happy anyways with this amp, as someone else said it is almost a complete thing and would be fine without any pedals, as it has its own for lead and chords switch. Well my loop pedal would still keep... ... show more

  • Hits All the Sweet Spots

If you are looking for a mid-powered tube amp that is highly versatile, great sounding, and tough enough for the road, I can’t recommend the AC15HW1 enough. 15 watts gives it plenty of power and headroom for most venues. If you’re playing club gigs, this amp is perfect. It can hang with drums, but you can turn it up enough to get that sweet Vox tube grind without deafening your audience. The sound… what can I say? It’s classic Vox. I bought mine after it blew away the standard AC15 I compared it to. It has a much more defined distorted sound, with lots of presence and detail that the standard ones don’t have. This makes it much more suited to heavier and more modern rock sounds than the AC15, especially without the aid of pedals. Cleans are deep and shimmering, no doubt aided by that massive pine cab. 1x12 combos often sound boxy, but not this one. It is easily good sounding enough to use in a studio, and provides great results in that application. I recorded an album using mine and the studio’s vintage tweed Deluxe. At the end of the day, the engineer complimented its sound. So if you seek an amp that can kill it on stage and in the studio, this thing is right up your alley. The Celestion Greenback sounds great, I think it sounds better than the Celestion Blue for distorted parts, and still sounds quite good on cleans. I’d say it’s just a different flavor of Vox, and not necessarily worse than the more expensive version with the Blue. It’s highly versatile, too. Although it lacks reverb and tremolo, it has a footswitchable Hot mode. This is fantastically useful as it bypasses the tone stack and gives you tons more volume, gain, and midrange. The extra volume lets your solos cut through the mix in a way pedals cannot usually match. The two channels, although not footswitchable, do have independent settings so you can switch inputs if you need clean or dirty sounds. Additionally, it responds very well to guitar volume knob adjustments, and it has a very effective master volume that lets it sound surprisingly good at lower volumes. It’s also built like a tank. Mine has been thrown in cars, vans, stages, been bumped, slammed, and dropped on occasion, yet it has taken all the abuse like a champ, with only a few tears in its Tolex to show. Only issue I’ve ever had with it was the original tubes dying after a year or two. Got them replaced and I haven’t had a single issue since. I’ve used it at tons of gigs and it’s never let me down. I know the sticker shock is severe, and to be fair, I did get a good deal on mine. Still, these amps are absolutely worth it in my opinion. They can absolutely compete with boutique amps tone-wise, and their hand wired construction will make them much more repairable and longer-lived than their PCB -based cousins. Think of it as an investment in tone. Trust me, you won’t regret it. ... show more
