Description

1968 was a transitional year for Fender amps, with tone that was still pure Fender but a look that was brand new. With a silver and turquoise front panel and classy aluminum "drip edge" grille cloth trim, the Princeton Reverb received a fresh new face as it remained the perfect recording and gigging amp. Small, light and moderately powered, it produced big tube tone, with world class Fender reverb and vibrato effects. For countless guitarists ever since, the Princeton Reverb has been the go to amp for classic Fender sound. The '68 Custom Princeton Reverb Amp pays tribute to the classic look, sound and performance of Fender's late '60s "silverface" amps. In a special twist, a modified tone circuit gives modern players greater tonal flexibility with pedals, and the amp's reduced negative feedback gives greater touch sensitivity and quicker onset of overdrive. The '68 Custom Princeton Reverb's single 10" Celestion TEN 30 speaker also delivers a more distinctively rock 'n' roll flavor.

  • Sweet Sounds
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
I can’t believe I have gone 45 years without one of these. As soon as I strummed my Les Paul, I knew I had something special going on. This made so many amplifiers I have useless. I don’t normally write reviews but EVERYONE needs one of these and a backup !

  • Better then the '65
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
Shame to see so many negative reviews about the '68 Princeton Reverb. I can't blame anyone who purchased this amp and had problems (bad reverb, rattling, buzzing, etc), but mine has no issues at all. No rattling, no buzzing, everything works great and the build quality is top notch. Most importantly, I think this amp sounds incredible. Yes, it is darker than the '65 Reissue (I own both), but it is also much fuller sounding with more low end and more mids. Going back and forth, the '65 sounds a little thin and "ice picky" after playing the '68. In terms of effects, I actually prefer the reverb on the '68, tremelo sounds about the same on both. I have made hundreds of purchases on Amazon over the years, but this is my first review. I felt compelled to write it because I just can't believe the relative low rating this amp has. I don't doubt the sincerity of other reviewers or the problems they had, but that has not been my experience. The '68 sounded amazing right out of the box and I have had zero issues. Highly, highly recommended. PS - My '65 PR Reissue is going up on Reverb tomorrow. ... show more

  • Sucks

I got this in and the power comes on but does not work. Had to immediately take it to an amp guy who charged me a lot of money

  • Big Fender Sound
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
I've wanted a Princeton Reverb for years, I was always told how great they are, and they are not wrong. It has such a classic Fender amp sound and is a lot lighter that a Deluxe Reverb is. My buddy has a Deluxe Reverb and he borrows my Princeton when he gigs smaller venues and loves it. At only 15 watt its a little pricey but the quality is well worth it to an experienced guitar player. Would recommend for anyone looking for that clean tone and has been playing for a while. Would not recommend for anyone looking for a natural heavy overdrive. (Probably wouldn't be getting a Fender if that was the case) Def not a beginners amp. ... show more

  • QC issues at Fender factory?
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
Not very happy with Fender as a company. In my opinion, the two amps I received should not have left the factory. First one I got had a bad reverb tank. Sent back to amazon, tried another one. Second one I got had microphonic tubes. I am really surprised Fender said these passed QC. I could hear the amps had problems as soon as I plugged in. I did some brief troubleshooting (I have owned 20+ tube amps over 40+ years). I don't think these problems can be attributed to shipping and handling. In my view, these problems should have been noticed at the factory. I have to give props to amazon: they were stellar in handling the return and refund. I am sure Fender warranty would have covered the repair, but the shop in my area (Seattle) was very reluctant to have me bring in the amp, and quoted at least 4 weeks before they could look at it. In my opinion, this shop did their best to discourage me from bringing in the amp. Result is that I am very disappointed in Fender company. ... show more

  • Seriously flawed amp, tried two, both had issues. 65 is much better...
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
Had to write this after buying one of these and then returning and trying a 2nd one. Both had serious issues that made them like a $200 amp. I used to own TWO of the PRRI (65 Princeton Reverb Re-issue) and LOVED them. Beautiful amp. When the 68 Custom arrived I was excited to have a warmer and easier to break up Princeton, along with the old school look. I was not aware that the 68 here was made in Mexico (yet only $100 cheaper than the 65 PRRI) until after I purchased it. When turning it on, it had a loud buzz and when the fever was turned up past 1 another loud buzz was layered on top of that. It was horrible rendering i useless for ANY recording. Plugged in my guitar and it sounded like flabby mud. Turned down the bass to 0 and treble to 10 and it was better but the sound was dull and my Mustang II sounded better on the BF setting. Much better. Put the volume past 2 and the cabinet rattled bad, put it past three and the tubes rattled so awfully it sounded like they would pop. Tried another as well as the 68 Deluixe Reverb and BOTH had the same issues. These are awful amps Cheaply made, rattling cabinets, bass heavy sound and I had to return and forget about it. The 65 PRRI is a much nicer amp in sound, quality and it takes pedals better than this 68. So disappointed. Sounds like an old $200 crate amp from a few years back. Loose, rattly, dull, bass heavy and no chime or BF sound to speak of. ... show more

  • Great amp
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
This amp is great. You can make it sound as clean or as dirty as you like. The first time I plugged it in it blew me away. No buyers remorse what so ever. When I got the amp the foot switch pedal was not in the box. I called fender and they put one in the mail for me that same day.

  • This is a very good amp for limited space
Style: 68 Custom Princeton Reverb Configuration: Amp Only
This is a very good amp for limited space, low volume and no pedals. It gets very bass heavy at 5 and muddy above that. I still like it, but it is not comparable to the 65 reissue. The 65' has breakup but still cleans nicely with guitar volume. Don't expect that from the '68 custom. I'm thinking an Eminence 12" will help a lot! I'll add to this review later when I know more or experiment with mods... ... show more
