  • Warranty Issue
Size: EVDC500 - 2 gallon Style: Humidifier
Humidifiers are essential devices during the winter, both to help prevent illness and reduce static electricity that can cause havoc with your electronics. Over the years, I have tried all three types of humidifiers (evaporative, steam, ultrasonic) and have found evaporative is the best for the following reasons: 1) Steam (warm moisture) humidifiers are VERY expensive to operate. As much as an air conditioner, in my experience. NO GOOD. 2) Ultrasonic humidifiers leave white dust all over your home. NO GOOD. Evaporative humidifiers cost MUCH less to operate than steam units and don't leave dust like ultrasonics. Yes, you have to replace the wicks when they stop absorbing moisture and yes, you need a good bacteriostatic water treatment like the Essick liquid. But those requirements are still cheaper and easier to deal with than those imposed by the other types of humidifiers. For some time, I used a Lasko 1158 recirculating evaporative humidifier, which did a great job of extending the life of its wick by pumping water from the reservoir and dripping it down on the wick. Unfortunately, the Lasko's build quality was just so-so, and the machine was quite loud in operation. I had previously owned a Vornado Evap40 unit and considered buying another. But that machine is quite an old model at this point, and it also made a loud "GLUG GLUG GLUG" sound as its jugs emptied. So I decided to try this newer large-room model from Vornado which sells for around the same as the Evap40 but includes some welcome improvements: 1) Its DC motor uses less energy, but that's not such a big deal given that we're just dealing with a fan blowing air through moist wicks. Fans don't use that much energy anyway. 2) The machine shuts off automatically if the jugs run out of water. This helps extend the life of the wicks by keeping them from drying out prematurely. 3) An energy saver mode is included. The fan comes on and off at a very low and quiet speed. Unfortunately, though, I found that even though I add bacteriostatic liquid to the water, after a few weeks the humidifier started putting out funky smells when I used it on energy saver mode. Apparently, at the very low speeds, the fan doesn't blow enough air through to keep the wicks moist enough. So I stopped using energy saver mode and haven't had a problem with funky smells when the unit cycles on and off at turbo speed. In addition, this humidifier is very easy to clean; all the parts lift right off the bottom water tray. The two water jugs each hold a gallon of water, and they're well designed. They fit under a kitchen sink faucet for easy filling, and their tops seal closed well. Each jug has a handle that makes it convenient to carry. In Turbo mode, the humidifier puts four gallons of water into the air a day so you have to fill the jugs twice a day. Finally, the machine is relatively quiet in operation. No GLUG GLUG GLUG noises, and even at the top fan speed the motor makes just a gentle whir, unlike the agrarian roar of the Lasko. I should mention as well the attractive modern design and compact dimensions. Now for the bad news: after three years on the job, the humidistat in this humidifier failed. (For example, at a humidity setting of 50%, the fan keeps running even though my two outboard humidity meters in the room read 60%.) So I applied to Vornado for warranty service and encountered a new problem. Apparently, the company was then out of stock on the EVDC500, "and we don't know when or if it will be back in stock." This is important because they don't actually fix the machines but simply replace them, so my only option was to choose from two other models offering respectively a smaller capacity or older technology. IMO this is NOT an acceptable solution, and previous positive experiences with Vornado have led me to expect better from them! Fortunately, I put my warranty request on hold and a month or two later found the EVDC-500 back in stock. I put through my request again, and eureka -- I just received a brand-new EVDC-500 today. So ultimately Vornado stood behind their product, replacing the actual model, and good for them... PROS: * Low energy consumption. * Very quiet in operation. * Easy to clean. * Water jugs easy to fill. * No white dust around home. * Attractive design, compact dimensions. CONS: * Warranty protection may not mean replacement with the same or better model!!! * Wicks must be replaced when they lose absorbency. * Bacteriostatic treatment recommended. ... show more

  • Broken product, bad customer support
Size: EVDC500 - 2 gallon Style: Humidifier
I bought two of these. I wish I’d read the reviews first. Both units have the same problems I’ve seen so many people complain about. The tanks don’t drain properly, it constantly shuts itself off, and it can't humidify the square footage it claims to be able to. In addition to this, Vornado’s customer service is bad. That’s the summary. Here are the details, including a tip on how to make it slightly less terrible. It has an over-sensitive water lever sensor that causes it to shut itself off when there is still plenty of water in the tanks. The tanks don’t drain evenly. In other words, one tank could be completely full of water while the other tank runs out, and then it’ll turn itself off. This is not a “level surface” problem. I have two of these, in different rooms of the house, and they both do this. It’s a pretty new house, built in 2017. The floors are level. Now, here’s the tip to solve this problem. Drain the unit and take it apart. Look on the bottom of the piece that sits in the water and you’ll see a float on a plastic post. That’s the water level sensor. Put a rubber band or something similar around the post to keep the float in the high position, and it will stop turning itself off. But this fix unfortunately introduces another problem, which is that the unit will never shut itself off, and it’s up to you to make sure the tanks never run out. Letting the wicks run dry can give bacteria and mold a chance to grow, so if you do this, you should disinfect or replace the wicks. On to the next problem. As others have mentioned, this unit cannot deal with larger spaces as it claims to. I have one in our bedroom, which is maybe 400 sq ft. I also have a separate hygrometer in this room, sitting on a shelf pretty close to the humidifier. With the humidifier set at 60% I’ve never seen the hygrometer register anything higher than about 38%. This is with the bedroom door closed all the time. Finally, I want to talk about the customer service experience I just had. I wanted to give Vornado a chance to fix the problem before leaving a negative review. I shouldn’t have bothered. Vornado offered to replace the units with another model, the Evap40. I didn’t really want an Evap40 in the first place or I would have bought that instead, but sure, if it works, I’ll take it. Then they asked me to destroy my current units by cutting the power cable and sending a picture to prove that I had done this. When they saw the pictures to verify I had done this, they would ship replacements. Um, ok? What am I supposed to do in the meantime? I still need humidifiers. I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get replacements. One of the humidifiers is in a small room with valuable wooden musical instruments. I can’t let that room dry out while I wait for a replacement. I asked if they could send me the units first, and then I would destroy the old ones. Here are some choice quotes from the rep I spoke to. I said "I can give you my word that I’ll destroy them after I get the replacements." He replied, "If we took everyone at their word then our customer service would be very low, wouldn't it?". Haha, what? trusting your customer's word is low customer service? I was also told "We have taken the EVDC series off of the market until the fix is done in China and those units can be shipped to us and are available to purchase and use in warranty claims", so they are well aware of the problems with this unit. However, this is not true as the official Vornado page right here on Amazon still has them listed for sale. I wish I had better things to say about the company and this particular product. It takes a lot of frustration for me to leave a bad review. Maybe once the get the issues addressed, it'll be worth it. But for now, I'd say avoid the headache and buy something else. Maybe avoid Vornado altogether, because if something goes wrong...good luck. ... show more

  • THOROUGH Review of product MONTHS after purchase
Size: EVDC500 - 2 gallon Style: Humidifier
I often review products several months, sometimes up to a year after buying the product. Too often I read unhelpful reviews written within days of purchase/use that say things like “looks good, can’t wait to see how well it works!” Or Works well, high quality!.” How can someone give a 5 star review before turining it on, or make comments about quality after using it for a couple days. Although Amazon prefers quick turnaround on product reviews, I like to write mine months, sometimes longer so that I can give more accurate, time tested, thorough reviews. The things people who are spending good money on a product, need and want to know. Okay that aside. I absolutely LOVE this humidifier. My mom purchased one a couple years ago and loves it. Whenever I would come over, I would comment on this unknown fresh smell that I couldn’t place. Eventually, I attributed it to the freshly humidified air coming from this machine. So I purchased my own. My apartment in the winter gave me dry skin and I bought a thermometer that said the humidity was in the 20’s. So I bought the same exact model as my mom and it has made my dry skin disappear. The air feels comfortably humid. Plus it’s so simple to use/clean. I change the filter once every 4 months and clean the reservoir every fourth fill up and have experienced zero issues with mold or bad odor. ... show more
