  • Love my Portable Buddy!
Color: Red Style: Heater
I bought this "Portable Buddy" as an emergency replacement for the Mr. Heater "Tough Buddy" my son gave me 4 or 5 years ago -- the only non-breathing entity for which I've ever developed a deep fondness! (The man on the Mr. Heater hotline says it can be fixed, so I'm keeping it.) But I needed heat immediately! I've never been happier to see a package at the Post Office! Amazon had a better price than local stores AND could get it to me in 2 days! (No local store had it in stock and it would have taken them at least a week to have it ready for pickup.) That's far too long for an old lady to be cold. I bought the fuel filter, too -- I believe -- after some research -- that not having one while using a 5-6 ft. hose and a 20# propane tank led to the malfunctioning of my Tough Buddy. (I was able to clean the pilot light tube to get it to light, but -- alas -- it wouldn't stay lit for more than 10-15 minutes.) The new Buddy portable heater gives GREAT heat! I live in the mountains in the southwest... in a partly-historic adobe house. I have a furnace, but I hate the blowing air (allergies) and the noise. And I guess I'm just tired of tending fires, though my fireplace has a firebox in it the blows heat throughout the "beehive" exterior. After being in this house for more than a dozen winters, I decided that it was stupid and expensive to try to heat the house, as I live alone... with my companion dog; my objective these days is to heat myself. The altitude hasn't been an issue. The portable Buddy lights easily and gives the direct warmth of a toasty fire while the vents at the top warm the surrounding area. I love this kind of instantly-warming heat. There is no comparison in my mind to a warm heater (or fire) with fresh air in the house and the stuffiness of a centrally-heated house. I use the heater only in the evenings, for reading and tv watching; I warm up on "high", but soon find myself switching to "low" and moving the heater farther away. I would never let it run unattended. I enjoyed using my fireplace for years, but you just can't get a good fire going as quickly as you can fire up this little heater! Compared to my old Tough Buddy, there have been some improvements made to this heater: The attachment (to the 1# propane tank pictured, or to the hose connecting to a 20# tank) now swivels -- which would make attaching the 1# tank infinitely easier. And there is a new pilot-lighting mechanism, now part of the main switch. I'm not sure how I feel about this change: It's worked fine so far, but I'm wondering if it will stand the time test, as I consider this a long-term purchase. The handle on top now swivels back, and there is now an oxygen-depletion sensor in addition to the tip-over sensor. The tip-sensor (in my old model) only went off once; the heater can be slid carefully, just not bumped. My dog treats it with respect, but I'd be careful around small children. The Mr. Heater hotline man told me the Buddy was exactly the same as the Tough Buddy. It may be, mechanically, but the new heater is lighter in weight and a bit smaller; the pad that lights up and gets hot is vertically oriented (TB was horizontal.) However, it's quite sturdy, and the really important part -- its heating ability -- is the same. I love it, and I'd recommend it for campers, people working in shops or garages, sports people and to anyone who can safely use a 20# propane tank, which is so much more economical than the 1# tanks. Terrific for emergencies! The caveat is that it shouldn't be left unattended, including while sleeping. P.S. Buy the fuel filter. I don't know enough about these things to review it, but I can attest to the fact that impurities (including added odorrants) in propane and the plasticizers in some propane hoses can lead to the untimely demise of this heater without a filter. Also, save the box for off-season storage of the heater; dust and spider webs would have to be cleaned out before re-use. And I'd suggest actually reading the user manual. ... show more

  • Great heater
Color: Red Style: Heater
This heater arrived on time and was packaged well. It's sturdy and works exactly as it should. It's easy to use and surprisingly light weight. The tip over feature is great especially around kids and dogs.

  • A life saver!
Color: Red Style: Heater
My central heater went out and my mechanic was out of state. All this for Christmas with guests for dinner. I got on Amazon and order it for an early delivery on Christmas Eve morning. When I got up at 8:00 am, the package had arrived! The guests and I had a warm and comfortable dinner. The heater works great, is easy to set up and use. ... show more

  • Wonderful little heater
Color: Red Style: Heater
We purchased 2 of these heaters a Big Buddy heater and this the smaller portable heater. Both to run on 20lb tanks for use in our kitty cottages for our rescue cats. The larger heater gets very warm and we have only needed to use it on medium and high twice for 2 minus degree nights other wise a 2nd smaller portable heater would more than sufice. Heaters are well made and rugged feeling. Tip over switch cuts the flame quickly. Both heaters will run on smaller 1lb tanks. I'd say on low both heaters run for four or five 8 hour nights on one 20lb tank. We purchased the 10 and 12 foot hoses to use with the heaters so we can keep the tanks outside of the cottages. My only gripe with the large Big Buddy heater is that the hose can only be mounted to one side of the heater and the space to get your hand in there to hook it up is small. We love the fact that these were designed to be used indoors as compared to many other propane heaters. I saw another review by a outdoorsman who routinely travels with his heater and sort of puts it thru some abuse in the back of his truck and the heater after 2 years still works due to rugged design. Our heaters wont see that but I feel its probably true. Highly recommend !!! ... show more

Color: Red Style: Heater
This thing works wonders in my vehile that dosnt have heat below zero. It defrost the window so I can get home. One thing you should know if you use it like I do. if you use a little propane tank like I do it will freeze if you leave it in the vehicle overnight. Bring it In. Lol keep a window cracked to to let the fumes out obviously. ... show more

  • Does its job very well
Color: Red Style: Heater
This propane heater does its job beautifully. It is not large, but it puts out quite a bit of heat, more than you would probably need in a tent, camper, or bedroom. Be careful and have a window cracked a little bit for ventilation, but this should keep you toasty warm. I am not much of a camper, but I bought it for times when our electricity goes out in the winter. We had one spell a few years ago when we lost electricity from about 7 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon. The temperatures were well below freezing, and we had nothing. The last couple of hours my wife and I crawled under the covers and tried to nap. But now with this heater and a few propane bottles, we can at least heat one room and stay toasty warm. ... show more

  • Great Price for the product
Color: Red Style: Heater
Great space heater, helps heat my garage. Keeping it on low will definitely give you more propane time. But still on low gives out good heat. No electric needed, just propane. I Don’t recommend using this indoors, unless your putting this on concrete or some type of solid wood or tile. Would probably start carpet on fire. Pics are of high heat and low heat. ... show more

  • Efficient and reliable heat source.
Color: Red Style: Heater
My amazon history shows that I purchased this portable heater in August 2015, and I am writing this review today (January 2025) because I needed to use it for the first time today! I bought the unit as an emergency heater, and indeed it has been sitting in my garage for the past 10 years in a corner, along with a few canisters of gas. As my heating system broke down (and winters in Pennsylvania can be harsh), I really put the unit to good use for a couple days until my furnace can be repaired. I highly recommend buying this unit or it ease of use and reliable heat source, and most importantly I think that every home owner (whether in a urban or suburban setting) should make sure to have an emergency plan. ... show more
