This book has lots of pictures that follow along with the written text to give you an idea of what to do as you attempt to whittle projects side-by-side with the book. Written in a conversational style, most people should be able to follow along to learn the basics – then take those skills forward for your own creations. For the beginner, there is a good overview of choosing a knife, sharpening, how to cut wood, etc. You truly can do this with one of the Swiss Army tinker knife. You may also want to do a search on the author’s name, as he has several instructional “how to” videos that are very similar to the chapters in the book – it can help bridge some of the question of “how did he do that” as you are doing your own project. ... show more

    • Perfect gift for my grandsons and nephews!
I bought three of these books for my grandson and 2 great nephews for Christmas. They are loving it. I also purchased a Swiss Army knife with them. They are having a blast making and creating. I love that it takes them outdoors and off of their screens. They are all 10 years old and I feel they are at the perfect age and responsible enough with the knife. I wish I had captured the looks on their faces when they opened their gifts!! ... show more

This book is easy to read. The author covers Swiss Army Knives in the beginning which is reasonable considering they supported his writing of the book. After this he gets into basic cuts, sharpening and projects. Sharpening should explain what 'sharp' means. My backpacking stones didn't do the job and after getting a Alabama stone set and following the directions I was able to cut a mulberry branch much more easily. I've almost completed the first project which is a letter opener. ... show more

    • Great book on using this wonderful knife and getting into a great hobby
Great book! Very well written and easy to follow demonstrations. Chris makes it very easy to get into this hobby using the high quality Victorinox Swiss Army knife. He shows how to sharpen which does not take expensive equipment or mysterious methods. I have grown in my appreciation of the Victorinox knife and how great it is. It is a bargain at $18 for the Tinker. I had the special opportunity to take a whittling class with Chris at his home in Lancaster, PA. What an inspiration he is. It was terrific. This is a great hobby that is very low cost, does not take much space and you can use branches that you can find for free by keeping an eye out for them when people prune or trees are downed. Once you start whittling, you get into that zone where time just flies by. Highly recommended! ... show more

    • Great for beginners - OK for anyone else wanting to whittle roosters, caricature stick birds and other small chatchkas.
First let me say I would give the book 3-1/2 stars if possible, however it does not rate a 4. The projects are basic, albeit though fun. I bought the kindle version specifically because I wanted a quick study on (the approach of) whittling the roosters, not so much a history of Victorinox. And even though the history of Victorinox, and Chris Lubkemann's relationship to the company is interesting the book, aptly entitled "Victorinox Swiss Army Knife Whittling Book", is obnoxiously& distractingly peppered with commercials - little side notes and tidbits of Victorinox trivia throughout. That said, Chris Lubkemann is clear and straight forward in his approach, the illustrations are excellent - and after all isn't that what buying a reference book is about. I did see similar rooster projects on You Tube but having a reference illustration (especially on first learning a new technique) on where to place this or that cut is indispensable. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a few other projects that I had previously wanted to try but had just not gotten around to. Sometimes it only takes a little stimulus like opening a book and saying this looks like fun let's give it a try, and now I have multiple functional 'stick' letter openers to hand out as gifts. ... show more
