  • Great stereo for the price
Stereo review Just had this stereo professionally installed and my first impression are that I love it. It looks great in my 04 f150 (new body style) and sounds great. The interface is very responsive and does not lag when swiping from screen to screen. Android auto works perfectly when I plugged my Samsung Galaxy 20 FE into the external USB port and works as it should (Apple Car Play works as designed on my wife’s iPhone as well). Lots of options to customize the sound via an EQ or preset sound modes. The thumb drive works in both the front USB port and external USB port. It says the SD card max is 32gb, but I am using a 64gb and haven’t tried anything larger. Bluetooth was easy to connect and controlled the music on my phone and the hands-free phone functionality (according to my wife) sounds great. There are for a few minor quirks that I have. Quirks: 1. This has been resolved via customer support. See update Front USB port does not seem to work with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay (the external USB works perfectly for both), but it does charge my phone (not sure of voltage) 2. Saved radio presets cannot be organized (they are arranged in frequency order) 3. Music volume cannot be controlled via the slider on screen. Must use physical volume up and down buttons. 4. File structure on SD card is displayed kind of funky. You will need to remove all the hidden files as it will try and access them. Also, I have an 64gb SD card organized with folders: BAND NAME -> ALBUM NAME->songs, and it only showing ALBUM folders then you can click on the album name and see the songs. Again, these are minor quirks and do not take away from this being a great stereo for a great price. Will try update this review after I have used for a while to see how it holds up. Updated review: Still loving this radio. Customer service is very helpful and was able to figure out how to switch between USB ports for car play. ... show more

  • Excellent Carplay sound system
I bought the newer YS102SL Starter unit and installed it on my Honda CR-V. Wiring and connections were fairly uncomplicated to do myself. The build quality is very good and the screen resolution is excellent with adequate brightness even in the sunlight. The manual says the unit will dim when the headlights turn on, but I have not been able to get this to work using either the dimmer or illumination wire from my car’s harness. It includes a screen protector which I installed since I knew nothing about the strength of the screen glass. I have an Axxess ASWC-1 interface for the steering wheel controls. It identifies the stereo as Pioneer/Jensen. The process was rather straightforward to map the buttons to the radio functions on the unit. The boot time is on the slow side at about 15s, but the backup camera activates much faster, so it’s not as noticeable overall. The sound quality is excellent - on par with premium sound systems costing hundreds more. There is no discernible noise when using just about any media. There is a full equalizer and additional bass, middle, and treble settings. I have noticed that the latter settings somehow reset to it’s default whenever you restart your car - even though the settings appear to have changed. I have to go back to the audio settings and tap on it several times to get it to wake up. Then I can lower the bass by moving it up or down and then back to the place where I last had it. The process is rather annoying. I talked to support about this and they are escalating the issue up the chain. The radio function leaves much to be desired as well. The interface has a magnifying glass icon that is supposed to search for all stations it can pick up - then you can add each to your favorites. I’ve noticed that it skips a lot of stations, so I have to go back manually and add them. The tuner works slowly, so this can be tedious. That being said, once you have your stations set up the radio works fine with stations having better reception than my factory unit. If you reset the radio, however, your favorite stations are lost. Thankfully, I have not had the need to do that in the week or so I have been driving with this. The bluetooth audio is adequate for phone calls, but there is a high pingy-ness almost like crackling when you play music. Media can also be played through the microSD slot. Movies and photos are very slow to load making it practically useless for that (which is not a good thing to do while driving anyway). MP3 files sound excellent from the microSD slot, but for some reason the first 1.5s of audio is muted when each track is played. I use Apple Carplay on this unit and it works flawlessly. Very smooth and responsive with equally impressive sound. Honestly, I can’t overemphasize the sound quality on this - haven’t ever heard audio like this in a car stereo. It gives new life to my factory speakers. Going back to the factory audio settings doesn’t stop Carplay from playing music and stuff, which is a nice feature. You can’t use Waze or other navigation apps while playing the AM/FM radio, but these stations are generally streamable on your smartphone anyway while navigating. Some of my minor complaints on this unit are things that can hopefully be fixed in a future firmware update: The RDS info on the FM radio has a rather small font, you end up taking your eyes off the road too long to read it. The date on the screen is fixed to day/month/year format. It would be nice to have the option for the American month/day/year format. It does not appear that user images can be used for wallpaper, just the half-dozen stock images. There are no guidelines built in for the backup camera. Atoto offers an aftermarket camera that has guidelines, but most car owners these days have OEM cameras already that do not have guidelines - they rely on the stereo to provide that. An option for a shorter 2s warm boot like the A6 Pro would be good. Bluetooth pairing does not have an access code. Sometimes I see random phones appear in the screen. It would be nice to have this more secure. All in all this is an incredible bargain for premium sound at $140 Prime. Since this product was just released a couple months ago, it’s reassuring to know the manufacturer offers firmware updates, so we will have to see what improvements are added. I am going to keep it and highly recommend it for now. I plan to update this review in a few months once I have road tested it for a while. ... show more
