  • Poor quality even for a budget set. Might be good to practice how to sharpen though
I'm a woodturner and have both budget and high-end turning tools. Obviously, these tools are not going to stack up against the higher end steels, but they don't stack up well against other budget options either. Bottom Line: If you are just starting out and are unable to find a better set of tools near this set's price point, it may make sense to buy. You get a wide selection of tools at a reasonable price. And most importantly, sharpening is a critical skill to learn. It makes more sense to practice and learn how to sharpen with cheap tools and upgrade to the better ones as your sharpening and turning skills improve. On the flip side, cheap tools like the ones in this set can discourage people from woodturning. Woodturning can be a frustrating skill to learn, and using cheap tools can really add to that aggravation without the person knowing part of the issue is the tools themselves. Moving from these tools to a higher-end one can be like going from driving on a gravel road in a pinto to driving on freshly laid asphalt in a corvette. More in-depth review: You get a nice selection of tools, all with handles, and a wooden case to store them. It even includes a small chisel which can be used to clean up nubs or remove loose bark. Here are some key observations: - The steel on the tools is fairly thin, even compared to other budget tools. - The steel is poor quality. It does not hold an edge very long, and it throws a lot of sparks on my CBN grinding wheels. My other tools throw very few if any on those wheels. - The tools need to be cleaned up and sharpened when you get them. This is standard practice, but even more important for this set. - Everyone has their own preferences on tool shapes and grinds, but the spindle roughing gouges and spindle gouge in particular should be re-shaped at a minimum. They come with a terrible grind. The grinds on the skew chisels are traditional, but a radiused grind would be better for a beginner. Keep a third of the edge on the toe side straight before starting the radius to add versatility. - Speaking of skew chisels, I recommend rounding off the edges along the tool, so they don't ding your tool rest and will allow you to move the chisel more easily. The edges come square and sharp, but the tool isn't used flat on the tool rest unless used as a negative rake scraper. - The steel and flute on the spindle gouge are very short. This will probably be one of your most used tools, and if you sharpen as often as you should (even more with this set), this tool will not last very long. I was expecting a budget tool set but was still disappointed. I will be using the steel to reshape into specialty tools, and they already have handles! ... show more

  • Beginner spindle set
The old adage of 'you get what you pay for' applies here. I've been turning for 10+ years and thought this would be a good beginning set for my son who's learning how to turn. I started with a Benjamin's Best set of gouges that looked very, very similar to this set but there are some differences. First, this is clearly a spindle set. All the flutes are very shallow. The 'bowl' gouge is really a spindle gouge and the usable flute is very short. The two other gouges are really roughing gouges but the flutes are also really shallow. The skews and scrapers are fine. All of these lower end gouges are going to be made out of the same HSS which is good enough to learn on. Part of turning is becoming proficient at sharpening anyway. But definitely don't expect to turn a bowl with these tools. ... show more

  • Solid construction, a bit dull
I'm new to turning but have experience with carbide tools to compare these to. The carbide tools remove material much more easily. I have to push harder to get these to cut well. The case isn't very good. It looks nice, but it's extremely thin and mine got a big dent/crack during shipping. On the plus side, these aren't very expensive and you get a lot of them. They're also very sturdy and none of mine have any looseness. I'm going to attempt to sharpen them to see if I can improve them. ... show more

  • Good steel
I'm new to wood turning and this kit seems to have just what I need. The material is high speed steel with good edge retention. The handles seem fine with a (polyurethane?) bumpy clearcoat (sand to taste). All edge grinds look good. Nice kit!

  • Good assortment
There is a good assortment of lathe tools in this set that come in a nice wooden box for storage. The handles are wood and long for good grip. The tools themselves come in a variety of sizes and shapes and are sharp and heavy duty. I am pleased with this set although I have to say that I have just begun turning wood. I feel this is a good value and assortment. ... show more
