  • Very capable radio at a great price
I currently, or used to, own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. I think this is my second TYT. The TYT TH-9800D is performing very well but I've only had it for a few hours. It's not a cheap looking build and feels solid, so I expect it to last a while. (Knock on wood). The Chirp programming went well, though I always need to remember how to get to the finer details in Basic setup (which is usually staring me in the face). This is kind of a clone of a Yaesu FT-8900 at a reasonable price. The speaker sound is good, it has clean signal output, the display is bright, and it's a nice looking radio (it doesn't have quite the same ruggedized look of the Yaesu). One oddity, though... the box arrived without any tape or seal, so it may have been opened before or could be an open box display unit from somewhere. Quite happy with the purchase. ... show more

  • Decent for the Money
Nice built quality and button and front key features. Arrives with FCC compliance for 2meter & 440 (70cm). These can be unlocked if you dare and the settings are only available with the Factory Software. Running Windows 10, software works fine. WARNING! There are 2 ways to unlock freqs like a Baofeng, but beware, if you use CHIRP, all settings will be missing if you do the MOD. I saved an image of the original Factory Software & options. Then imported radio and saved those settings first. Same with CHIRP, imported stock radio and saved dated image. Then tried the MOD and yup, no CHIRP settings. Resetting radio to factory WILL NOT REMOVE EXPANDED TXT FREQS. However, if you made backup first, just restore to the radio and it will put everything back where it should be, legal freqs and CHIRP settings available. Ran mine temp to 24amp power supply with cigarette plug wired on back as an experiment. Power settings on meter came in spot on except 1. Low 5watts, Mid2 10watts, Mid1 20watts exactly. High power @ 40watts which is decent for running thru 24amp supply wired to cig lighter adapter, then cig power supply to radio. Passed power test @ 100%. I have a friend who has one of these, always sounds excellent with stock mic. When you setup freqs, select MEDIUM on the narrow or wide band settings. This will give best sound with perfect clean output. Also like the 4 P buttons on Mic. You can program them in the Factory Software or Chirp. Great features that my Yaesu FT-8900R lack in options. Nice air flow from back heat sink and fan. Purchased 2nd one while available for basement. Running mine in bedroom with ladderline jpole dual band antenna on 5 watts hits repeaters in opposite direction loud and proud. Get the Asurion Protection Plan as this radio only has 3 mth warranty to CHINA! Update: Having problem figuring out the cross band repeater function. Seems to only work in VFO mode not with saved memory channels (simplex on left, repeater on right). ... show more

  • Software is for the wrong radio
Trying to install software… it’s a no go as the software was for every radio but this one. Will manually program… or maybe chirp, and keep trying to get software… I see it is available for purchase, but I already did, right? Will wait for response or send back….The radio itself seems fine, but what good is a 800 channel radio if you have to manually program? UPDATE: The radio sent was not the Plus… the only way to know is that there is a sticker on the radio (not the box) that it’s done, and the older one is buggy, and cannot do Chirp. New radio sent…. This time the software (disk) is blank! But the driver (https given) does work. Very easy to load everything on the radio from Chirp, and works very well…. Radio is great, reads 50w power as advertised, works from 11 meters to 1.25 meters, and will happily freeband so be careful. It says you can turn on or lock out band with the “software” if they make any. Zero support from TYT, I will keep trying to get the software, or maybe someone I know has a copy…. Could easily be a 5 star product, just be warned, glad I bought off Amazon as I got a replacement the day after I figured out what was wrong. ... show more

  • Buy this over the TYT-TH-9000D
Had the 9000D for a few years, but most of the group has this one. It’s well worth the upgrade. If I were to do it again, I’d skip the lower end and go straight to this. Being able to scan multiple frequencies is great. I have no use for it yet, but being able to detach the face and mount that wherever you’d like and hide the body is a great option. Easy to wire difficult wire, can be difficult to program if it’s your first time and you want custom labeled channels. ... show more

  • Failed after only using for less than two months
This is the second TYT TH-9800D with the first one dead on arrival and then was replaced and the second unit has failed after only two months of use. The have been several warning online regarding this unit from others whom have experienced similar issue with the radio. The radio was working fine and then it just stopped operating as specified. I reset the radio to the factory defaults and reprogrammed with the same results. The unit stopped receiving on the left channel and would continuously beep if any channel was set for any band other that the 2 meter amateur radio band. I can't recommend this radio to others as I have discovered that it is very common to experience these types of issues. ... show more

  • Well worth the money
I was skeptical at first on buying this radio, but I decided to roll the dice and try it out for myself. The radio seems to be made well, included all the items you would need to remove the head and relocate it in your vehicle. It was a easy install and remembered to change out the fuses with better quality ones. Radio seems to work great, was easy to program by hand or you could use the cable that was included with it and you can use chirp to program it. I have been told it sounds clear and I can't seem to find anything wrong with it, I guess time will tell if it lasts. For right now I am pleased with it and will run it through the paces as I use it. Also it has some really nice features to it. TYT seems to have cured it's glitches and the "plus" model seems to be working well. ... show more
