Description

"Supremely humane.... Kay leaves us with a broad landscape of sweet tolerance and familial love." —The New York Times Book ReviewIn her starkly beautiful and wholly unexpected tale, Jackie Kay delves into the most intimate workings of the human heart and mind and offers a triumphant tale of loving deception and lasting devotion. The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret, one that enrages his adopted son, Colman, leading him to collude with a tabloid journalist. Besieged by the press, his widow Millie flees to a remote Scottish village, where she seeks solace in memories of their marriage. The reminiscences of those who knew Joss Moody render a moving portrait of a shared life founded on an intricate lie, one that preserved a rare, unconditional love. Read more

  • Nice Clean Book
Required for a class. Shipment was easy and the book was in perfect condition when received.

  • You Are Missing Out If You Don't Read This Book
I am constantly forcing other people to read this novel- the writing is tight and amazing, the characters are compelling and as the former partner of a transman, this gave a partner a voice that I found realistic and sad and wonderful. It's hard to find voices for transpeople and their partners in quality literature, but this met my needs to feel recognized and also should be counted as a contemporary classic novel. I've shared this book with multiple book-lovers and every single one has loved it (in fact, I'm not sure that my copy came back to me last time....). It may be time to buy this for myself again. ... show more

  • Eh.
This may be a tad biased because I was required to read this book for school, & I generally have a distaste for being assigned books I don't get to choose and having to write literary analysis on them. This book was okay and somewhat thought provoking, but ultimately I felt like there was really no point to it. I felt like at the end, nothing had really happened. The only real twist is at the beginning and after that, I felt like I was waiting through the entire book for something to happen. I wouldn't say it's bad, but It isn't my taste. ... show more

  • Extraordinary and sensuous
This extraordinary and sensuous novel is told primarily from the point of view of a son who is disgraced by his father's behavior and seeks revenge. This tale of secrets and betrayal is brilliantly handled. Every detail and every symbol has significance. The prose reads like a jazz composition.

  • Beautiful writing
Jackie Kay writes like the poet she is. I read this book for my book club. Due to the subject matter, we had a very spirited discussion. I have recommended this book to anyone who likes good writing, loves music and has an open mind.

  • Interesting Read
This story starts off strange, but it is a very interesting read. I wonder if it is based on the life of a real jazz musician. If you know somoene is is suffering from a crisis in identifying with their gender this book tackles that issue.

  • Trumpet is GENIUS
Trumpet is the current "read" for my Book Club. I can't wait for our discussion because I'm thinking we will all give it two thumbs up. (I SO LOVED ROGER EBERT. That last comment is dedicated to him.) The story line, the writing style, the format, the EVERYTHING ...Trumpet is GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
