"It's a fun, frothy quintessentially British romcom about a certified chaos demon and a stern brunch daddy with a heart of gold faking a relationship."—New York Times bestselling author Talia Hibbert AMAZON BEST BOOK OF THE MONTH Named a best book of the year by Oprah Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Goodreads, The Washington Post, and more!WANTED: One (fake) boyfriend Practically perfect in every wayLuc O'Donnell is tangentially—and reluctantly—famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he's never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately, apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened. But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that's when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don't ever want to let them go.Discover the LGBT romance about exact opposites falling in perfectly imperfect love that New York Times and USA Today bestselling author CHRISTINA LAUREN calls "hilarious, witty, tender, and stunning." • a most excellent contemp romance
“You”—I gave a thwarted sigh—“are a terrible fake boyfriend.” “I’m building fake anticipation.” “You’d better be fake worth it.” “I am.” this had no right being as adorable & sweet & funny & clever as it was! i loved watching their relationship develop. i thought both characters were really lovable. luc constantly sticking his foot in his mouth is literally me 😭 and oliver was so adorable as the stern on the outside, sweet on the inside LI (and vegetarian king 👑). watching them learn to open up to each other and be each other's support was a delight. “I don’t want fine. Fine isn’t enough. It’s not about the open fire or whatever other clichés you can conjure up, but yes, I want a connection. I want you to care as much as I care. I want you to need it and want it and mean it. I want it to matter.” alexis has very clever writing and makes scenes with all the eclectic side characters really fun, it adds a lot of charm to an already quite enjoyable story. also shout out to the 10 things i hate about you reference 💖 the narrator was excellent. i already have a harder time w processing audio vs reading, and accents typically make it all the more difficult, but i didn't really have an issue with this one and i thought he captured all the characters' essences very well! i will definitely be reading the next book and checking out more of alexis hall's books! ... show more

  • Funny and romantic.
I'm kinda addicted to escape romance reading, usually about M/F relationships. But, let's face it, love is love and I've found some very good authors that write M/M romance. Two that often write excellent books in the historical romance genre are K.J. Charles and Cat Sebastian. Now I've found a very good contemporary romance M/M author, Alexis Hall. Although this romance has some angsty moments, it's mostly a romantic comedy and it checked all my entertainment boxes, even giving me some LOL moments as I read, not to mention a lot of romantic feels. And, to top it off, it was a slow-burn romance, not one of those CRs with sexual encounters being the primary page filler. Our two main characters are a bit chalk/cheese//oil/water. Luc O'Donnell is an emotional mess and his life reflects that. He has a job he's not especially proud of, working for a charitable foundation for the preservation of dung beetles (yes, you read that correctly). His father, a relatively famous aging rockstar, deserted him and his mother when he was a baby and that's a big part of his issues. He drinks too much, parties too much, and was betrayed by his last romantic partner. Yep, he's an emotional mess. Then there's Oliver Blackwood, the total opposite, it seems. He's a successful barrister, an ethical vegetarian, an order-and-neatness freak. Seemingly he's in complete control of his life. Oliver and Luc are acquaintances, having a good friend in common. And when Luc messes up once again in his life and his job is on the line, he needs to show the desire to reform himself. For some reason, I guess because this is a romantic comedy, it's suggested that he should fake engage himself to someone very respectable, someone with much more gravitas than Luc. Turns out sober and serious Oliver is currently partner-less and will be needing a significant other to accompany him to his parents' upcoming anniversary party. So the two agree to a fake relationship, convenient for both of them. I've read many of these fake fiance romances over the years, mostly male-female fake engagements, but this is, IMO, the best one I've ever read. It's funny, it's romantic, it has some sad and poignant moments, and I loved the characters here, both main and secondary, from Luc and Oliver to Luc's mother, to their friends, to Luc's quirky co-workers at the charity. Well, not all the characters are likeable. Oliver's parents are a piece of work, as is Luc's absent father who shows up again in his life. And Oliver, who seemed to have it all together, turns out to have some emotional insecurity issues of his own. And we already knew Luc was a mess. So Luc starts to grow up and he and Oliver help each other to heal. Lovely story. ... show more

  • Offensively Perky Breakfast Tyrant
Read this book! If there's one thing you take from this review it's to read the damn book. Alexis Hall is officially on my list of favourite authors of all time. What's to like? The humour. Boyfriend Material had me giggle and deep belly laugh from the start to the end. The friendship. Fake friends praise you constantly, true friends mock you, clean house with you, call you on your bull, and stick to your side. And that's exactly what you find in these pages. Intellectual & dim conversation stimulation. Oof, that rolls off the tongue. What I really love about this book is the fact that it's not just a silly, sappy story. It comes with great humour, interesting facts, real people struggles, and stimulating conversation. Big words galore - expand your vocabulary. Broken, beautiful people on a healing journey. Going and growing through the issues thrown at them. Maybe I'm not wording anything right. Maybe I'm trying to say too much, but saying nothing at all. So I'll stop running my mouth and just say Read the Book. ... show more
