Description

Longlisted for The Center For Fiction's 2024 First Novel Prize • Named a Best Book of 2024 by Elle, Vogue, and Debutiful “This new novel is a real heart- squeezer. Beautiful, one of a kind and perfectly titled.” —Matt Berninger, The National “Anyone’s Ghost is about so very many things: the pains of growing up, friendship and pining, drugs, sex, the frustrations of masculinity and the thrill of testing death itself. But more than any of that, it is an overwhelmingly beautiful love story. This book will make you cry.” —Jonathan Safran Foer An extraordinary debut novel in which the transforming love and friendship between two young men during one unforgettable teenage summer in rural New England haunts them into adulthood It took three car crashes to kill Jake. Theron David Alden is there for the first two: the summer they meet in rural New Hampshire, when he’s fifteen and anxious, and Jake’s seventeen and a natural; then six years later in New York City, those too-short, ecstatic, painful nights that change both their lives forever—the end of the dream and the longing for the dream and the dream itself, all at once. Theron is not there for the third crash. And yet, their story contains so much joy and self- discovery: the glorious, stupid simplicity of a boyhood joke; the devastation of insecurity; the way a great song can distill a universe; the limits of what we can know about each other; the mysterious, porous, ungraspable fault line between yourself and the person you love better than yourself; the beautiful, toxic elixir of need and hope and want. Brimming with rare, radioactive talent, August Thompson has written a love story that is electrically alive and exquisitely tuned. In the words of Jonathan Safran Foer, “This book will make you cry.” Read more

  • What a Story!
Just finished reading August Thompson’s Anyone’s Ghost and I know it’ll stay with me for a long time. The writing is beautiful and the emotions are raw and relatable. Highly recommended if you like Ania Card’s Above The Sea, or The Sea Elephants by Shastri Akella. Great job, Mr. Thompson. Can’t wait to read your next book. ... show more

  • Good novel, not a gay story though
Strong and well written novel. Gay readers should be aware that it is not the gay coming of age story that it appears to be from the blurbs. It is the story of a scattered romance between two straightish bi guys (of the kind who preferentially marry women), and the protagonist is actually somewhat critical of gay men. ... show more

  • This book changed me
And for the better. I've never come across anything like it, and I doubt I ever again will. Aside from the powerful prose, the gripping narrative, and the important, PRESSING themes, this is one of the most impactful pieces of writing I've read in recent memory. Or ever.

  • Coming of age story
Anyone's Ghost by August Thompson is a coming of age story while navigating broken households, grief, loss, and search for belonging. I don't know how I feel about this book yet. I had a hard time reading this one, and I plowed through the book just to see how it ends. I am still not sure whether I liked it or disliked it. One thing I know for sure is that I didn't like any of the characters. The toxic nature of the relationships in this book was just hard for me to feel any connection to them. This book will probably land differently for the right audience, and that's definitely not me. CW: Substance use, addiction, self harm, infidelity ... show more

  • Utterly captivating
Wow. An extraordinary debut novel, indeed. Anyone’s Ghost is a heart-wrenching coming-of-age story that follows Theron, an insecure fifteen-year-old whose life is upended when a slightly older boy named Jake shows up as his manager at his part-time job one summer. Jake is confident and self-assured — everything Theron wants to be and everything Theron wants, full stop. Over the years, Jake flits in and out of Theron’s life, and Theron finds himself utterly consumed and intoxicated, every time. But Jake is a little too wild for his own good, and the third car crash finally gets him. The first thing that grabbed me was undoubtedly the writing style. It was raw and perfectly captured the quiet devastation of internalized homophobia and grief. I was captivated by Theron’s narration from start to finish, and he was just such a well-written, multi-layered character. Jake was also very clearly his own character but we were able to see him through Theron’s eyes, giving him a sort of “mythical” quality that was just very intriguing. While the blurb mentions the three car crashes and essentially gives away the ending, it’s actually not a huge part of the book. There is so much more to Theron and Jake’s story. My only wish would probably be that I wish there was more connectivity between the time skips, even if it was just a few mini-chapter. Maybe this is me being greedy and just wanting more, but I also just feel like it took me a little while to get me situated when the setting changed. Other than that, I really don’t have anything bad to say about this book. The writing style is extremely immersive and the narration is captivating. As someone who loved movies like Maurice, I felt like this book gave me the same feelings I had watching that, and it has the same sort of mysterious atmosphere. I would highly highly recommend this one. ... show more

  • Captures Queer Love and Coming-of-Age with Impact
August Thompson's "Anyone's Ghost" is a poignant and heartbreaking examination of queer love, teenage desires, and a coming-of-age love story that sticks with you long after the last page is read. I was really drawn to Jake and Theron. The end of this narrative is clear from the start. But knowing the outcome doesn't ruin the journey. I was engrossed in Thompson's writing from the very first page. It's clear how much thought he put into the narrative and characters as well as how he sets the scene. Even if August's next move breaks my heart yet again, I can't wait for more! The pace, especially when we transitioned to the current day, felt a little hurried in comparison to the rest of the book, which is my only minor complaint. The conclusion, however, was fitting and didn't leave me feeling let down. ... show more

  • Thrillingly novel, sweetly familiar
The experience of (binge) reading "Anyone's Ghost" was both thrilling and familiar. Thompson captures the psyche-gripping intensity of first love through endearingly authentic characters, original storytelling, and hyper-creative, yet accessible prose. I was completely immersed from page one through the very end. ... show more
