When the batteries on my APC BR1500G failed the self test after 5 years I figured this would have been a good time to get a rack mount UPS for my server rack. Well, that was my thought until I realized what a downgrade this was. The batteries on this unit are not replaceable, I know I read somewhere to replace the batteries on Trip Lite rack mount units to remove 6 screws from the front panel and slide the battery out but that's not for this model, thats for their "Smart" model costing more than twice of this model. Another downgrade is the LCD screen, it is extremely cheap where is there is light shining on the panel you can see the outline of numbers even when they are not lit up ( hard to explain in test, but think of an old Casio watch from the 90s). One more downgrade was the software, Going from Power Chute to Power Alert was laughable. A battery test cannot be performed from the software like the APC units. I have to physically go to my rack a fiddle with the buttons to perform the battery test. Oh yes! The fan, it runs 24/7. On my APC the fan only turned on when it was running on battery, this thing, the fan runs as long as the unit is turned on. More noise pollution than needed. On the plus side we did have a brown out and the UPS handled it well keeping the Norco 4224 with 24 HDDs running along with Fios modem and switch. I wouldn't have noticed the brown out at all if the lights didn't blink. I paid the extra for the expandable version but now I'm not even sure I want to buy the external battery if the batteries cant be replaced and ill have to toss this in the trash and buy a new one once they fail. Which, will be a PITA to perform a disconnect, unrack, rack the new unit and reconnect. Do yourself a favor, go with the non expandable version where the fan doesn't run 24/7 and cost less or just go with APC. ... show more

It shuts off unexpectedly and does not restart automatically when the power comes back on. I have this in a rack powering a managed switch and some other small networking equipment. I am not running the management software as it is not connected to a PC or server. Twice I have had this unit simply shut off during the day. Last night the power was off for an extended period of time. I had to come in on a Saturday because my network was down. The culprit was this power supply. When the power came back on this unit did not come on. Consequently the managed switch that connects EVERYTHING else on the network to my server was down. I will finding an alternate UPS to replace this unit. ... show more

The product I received my be defective because it doesn't keep equipment powered at all during a power loss even though the display shows as ~80% power draw. However, the most annoying thing about this UPS is that after power is lost and then restored, it doesn't automatically switch back on. This means you need to go manually intervene after a power outage, completely defeating the purpose of having a UPS. A normal surge protector is less interruptible than this UPS. ... show more

I purchased this unit specifically because it is rackmountable. As you have probably guessed, I use it to provide power to my rackmounted gear (Netgear switch, Behringer XR18 Mixer, Synology Nas's DS918+ and 414j, Aune x1s and x7s). My load is 14 percent and wattage load is 130 watts. I have had 3 power outages since having this unit and each time it has happened my equipment has suffered a loss of power until I turned UPS back on because it goes off. The best guess is that the unit turns itself off because of a possible power surge prior to the outage. My problem is this, the whole point of the $185 ups is to protect the more expensive equipment attached to it. I would rather spend another $185 for an ups than $1000 for a server or $500 for a mixer or even $700 for headphone equipment. The priority should be attached equipment before self in this chain, otherwise it is an overpriced power strip. ... show more

The fan in this unit runs all the time! This wouldn't matter if installed in a dedicated server room, but if you want to use it for the computer in your music studio or ham radio shack, forget it! The unit does indeed install in a standard 19" rack and takes up 2U. Another reviewer stated that rack ears only mount on one side of the enclosure, but that's not true. You only have to pop out two plastic covers to expose the mounting holes for the ear on the other side. I haven't used it long enough to know if it's reliable, and I intend to return it, so I won't know, but it seems to function as it should. ... show more

Without changing the product number, model number, or description, Tripp-Lite made a pretty significant change in design. There is now a fan in the front casing which runs 24/7 and cannot be disabled. I have 3 others of this specific unit and none of them have this feature. All are used in either HTPC movie viewing areas or quiet offices...all are completely silent and only make noise when the power goes out and they switchnover to battery power. The new version sounds like a jet engine whenever charging...even when not under load. Do a test run and let it discharge for 5 mins? The fans will be on MAXIMUM ATTACK for an hour while the batteries top up. When not preparing for takeoff, the fan is still highly intrusive in a quiet room, and in no way an acceptable option for any home theater environment. If you are buying for an already-noisy environment and don't care about an extra turbofan, they do make good rackmount units and are much less expensive than comparable APC items. I have since switched over to CyberPower. Cheezy name, but 100% silent and they also have active PFC versions at this pricepoint. ... show more
