Description

The Slash 4X4 begins with an innovative chassis incorporating a ribbed, triangulated structure that's optimized for extreme brushless power. Underneath, the chassis is smooth to reduce drag and prevent snags driving through brush. The high center ground clearance drastically increases the off- road versatility allowing you to tackle rougher terrain and obstacles. On the track, the center of gravity is just right. The Slash 4X4 feels planted to deliver the authentic Short Course handling. New Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) allows you to experience all the extreme power that was engineered into the Slash 4X4 by making it easier to control on slippery surfaces. The Velineon VXL-3s ESC works with the 3500 motor for extreme power and its brushless design reduces wear and friction. The VXL-3s offers 3 driving modes: Sport, Race, and Training Mode. Training Mode limits power to 50% to allow new drivers to gain experience. Velineon accepts standard 7-cell NiMH batteries up to 3s 11.1V LiPos (sold separately) with its integrated low-voltage protection. Waterproof electronics allow Slash the freedom to drive through water, mud and snow. The TQi 2.4GHz transmitter is fully adjustable and can be equipped with a Bluetooth module that turns your Android, iPad iPhone or iPod touch (sold separately) into a powerful tuning tool. Slash 4X4 allows you to choose the best battery and charger for your needs (sold separately). The innovative Slash battery tray accommodates 7-cell or 8-cell NiMH packs as well as 2s or 3s LiPo packs. Slash 4X4's highly efficient drivetrain spins effortlessly with an aluminum driveshaft and rubber-sealed ball bearings. The Modular design allows you to remove the entire front or rear section with just a few screws for easy maintenance. Slash 4X4's Race Replica bodies are fully decorated with licensed logos and graphics for total authenticity.

  • 1st r/c purchase —3rd update after 5 months
Adding this 3rd and final update after 5 months of ownership. This isn’t a cheap hobby. So far I’ve replaced nearly everything on the truck. It all pretty much will break sooner or later. I will say that I’ve not bought any upgrade parts twice, so the upgrades were all worth it but man does it add up over time. Easily more than the purchase price of $450. They are fun but just be prepared to spend more money. I’ll update the parts list below, but honestly just saying you are going to replace it all sooner or later is much easier lol. Can’t say I regret buying it, but I bought 2 of these for my son & I to mess with so every time we break something I have to buy the upgrades twice. Used to be a competitive bass angler so I know about expensive hobbies. RC cars are not that kind of money, but I can tell you by the time it’s all said and done with several batteries, charger & upgraded parts you will have over $1000 invested…….or you’ll have a broken truck you never mess with. Good luck!!! First time R/C buyer complete break down with very important tips to perspective buyers on the fence. I recently bought 2 of these Slash 4x4's for my son and I to have time together. I've watched TONS of videos trying to decipher all the choices. We wanted a truck that was very multi-purposed and under $400. Not the fastest or best basher but something that could do it all. Also indented to run Lipo’s but more for the extended run times rather than the hyper speeds most of the people online talk about. About the Lipo batteries...this worried me somewhat due the over heating concerns I've heard about. We are suburban dwellers and don’t plan to compete with our trucks. We ended up picking the Traxxas Slash 4x4 (non-vxl) for its huge aftermarket support, wealth of online tips and reviews and endless aftermarket options. Another verified purchaser of this same truck recommended going for the bigger Mah 2 cell Lipo’s for the extended run times without the heat issues and increased wear and tear associated with the hotter 3 cell Lipo’s this was BY FAR the best advise I’ve gotten so far. We bought 4 of the Zeee 2S Lipo Battery 7.4V 80C 7200mAh, plus wire adapters and charge them with a Traxxas 2972 EZ-Peak Plus 100 Watt NiMH/LiPo Dual Charger and have had great success. Using these cells--the trucks are very fast, but not so fast that control is ragged edge. 30 minute or more run time with ZERO overheating issues so far. This may not be what you want if you just have to see that 60 mph speed, but for where we wheel and what we do it's great. I have ordered the heat sink/fan upgrades for ours to increase life span of motors, and yes, we will get the 3 cell fire breather battery's sometime later but for now the 2 cell 7200's are excellent. Now, here is, in my opinion the things you MUST buy....or you will buy after you break stuff and you 100% will break these parts within first 2 full hours of wheeling. Also, we are not hitting huge skatepark ramps or jumping 10 feet in the air. Very normal, but rough playing. Full aluminum shocks. -Reviews are all over the place so I don't have a specific shock to recommend. I saw all the videos saying to replace the shock caps with metal ones because the plastic ones pop off easily, I blasted the top off one of mine in the first 20 minutes. What the YouTube guys don't tell you is--that when you pop the shock cap off, you will forever loose the little speciality rubber O-ring that lives under that plastic cap. Also, something nobody that I've seen on YouTube say is the the little plastic disk that sits under the coil spring to hold it up. IS VERY easily lost during normal ripping around. We've lost 3 of these little disks during the 1st 2 hours wheeling. You can still keep going without it on the shock, but that corner of the truck will sag and the tire will rub the body. So, save the $14 on shock caps and spend $30-$40 on all new shocks straight from the jump & be sure to put lock tite on the screw on bottom part of the shock. RPM 80709 Traxxas Slash 4x4 front and rear A-arms ---Snapped one of my A-arms today around hour number 3. The RPM's are cheap at $22 for all 4 corners, just order them the same time you order your truck and put them on before heading out. If they are good enough for Kevin Talbot they should be ok for you There are other upgrades you can do, like alloy steering knuckles, and alloy drive shafts, but we haven't broken that stuff yet lol. The two things I listed above are must haves though. Lastly, spend the time watching the Lipo education stuff on YouTube, it's really not been as big of a hassle as I feared. Also, be wary of ordering parts from people on YouTube simply because they have a big channel and sell the stuff they are reviewing. Some of these guy MAY NOT actually have the part you want In stock ready to ship the day you buy it, rather they themselves order it & ship it to you after they get it. This stinks when you order something a full week before your next planned wheeling trip & intend to use the part on that trip, Only to hear from that YouTube creator and hobby shop owner that 6 days after you bought the stuff, he's now got it in stock & is about to ship it to you. This stunk to me & I wasn't ready for it. Over all, we are 100% satisfied with our Traxxas Slash 4x4's. They are amazing for what the do and stand up to. Yes parts have broken, but I knew these were weak points going in. I sincerely hope this helps anther person make up his mind. Great little trucks, tons of fun, just plan on spending a minimum of $200+ over the cost of the truck for it to be ready to run, -batteries -charger -extended battery hold down -battery checker -battery bag -lipo wire to Traxxas adapter -cooling fan and heat sink This is a list of all the parts that have failed & I upgraded -shocks (don’t fool with the alloy caps, just get complete shocks -A arms (RPM) -alloy steering knuckle kit -alloy wheel nuts -steel Traxxas cv axles front and rear -belted tire/wheel set ESPECIALLY if you run 3s -revo slipper clutch upgrade kit -hardened steel spur gear -RPM clip less body mount kit -driveshaft cover -replacement Traxxas Velineon motor (partly because I got it super wet & partly because I didn’t change the gearing after swapping the blown out original tires for slightly larger belted ones) -R/C specific tool kit is handy as well as a RC specific nut and bolt kit… Cheers!! ——UPDATE——- After 3 trips out with my son, we have yet to go without breakage. This time it was driveshaft issues….and yes, this was anticipated breakage due to reviews I’ve seen on YouTube and Amazon. I went with the Kevin Talbot recommendation, Traxxas Rear Steel-Spline Constant-Velocity Drive Shafts (2 Piece) And also figured since I was doing this, I would upgrade the stock plastic steering and caster blocks with the Traxxas aluminum ones at an additional $210 per car. Still somewhat happy, but I’m not sure if I wouldn’t recommend that you just go ahead and buy the Slash ultimate from the beginning. ... show more

  • Awesome first car for newbs
If you're reading this, you've been following in my foot-steps. You're researching everything about hobby-level RC cars trying to figure out what should be your first purchase. My son and I got this last week, and have been driving it a few times a day since then. Fun is not a strong enough adjective. We've used this on asphalt, dirt, grass, wood chips and beach sand. We've already started designing the dirt course we plan to build in our backyard. We're hooked. ... couple things we've learned as newbs - BATTERIES: We have 1 Traxxas NiMH 4200 mah, and a bunch of Traxxas LiPo 3S 5000 mah. We also invested in a couple Traxxas EZ-Peak chargers. I highly recommend this combo of batteries. First, the Traxxas batteries and charger have a cool, "ID" feature that auto-detects battery type (NiMH or LiPo). This is especially useful if you're running LiPos, from a safety perspective. The 4200 mah NiMH battery was great for getting my 6yo son trained up. The battery is only good for ~30mph. In training mode... maybe 20. The problem is that after ~3-5 drives, neither my son or I will ever use this battery again. We'll keep it around for when he has friends who want to drive. This battery also runs out the fastest. The LiPo 3s batteries are other-worldly. Wow. VERY big difference between these and the NiMH. I don't have the gearing to get up to 60+ mph... so *ONLY* ~45mph. My gosh this thing is fast with these batteries. In "training" mode, my guess is these are still good for well over 30mph. Here's what no one tells you ahead of your purchase... even though the controller is setup to run 3S batteries, it's not setup to run them for very long without over-heating. Best guess is that you get around 4 mins of hard driving in full mode, and about 7 minutes in training mode before the controller shuts down. We don't have this issue with the NiMH battery, but those run considerably less power. We have a couple fans on order to try and get some more time out of the car. And yes, this is a common issue for Slash cars. Once I knew what to search for... then there was plenty of info out there. To be honest, knowing what I know now, I'd probably should have bought the LiPo 2S 7200 mah batteries. That said, the 3S batteries are AWESOME! CAR: If you're watched a few youtube vids, you know these things are indestructible. Wow. The first time my 6yo got on 3S, he drove the car right through a rock yard ornament. One inch thick chunks of rock exploded everywhere. The car didn't even get a scratch. The heavy-duty plastic bumper didn't even deform. Wish I could say the same for the yard ornament. UPGRADES: After a couple drives, I took a trip to my local hobby store to get two more Slashes (My wife and I want our own!). I asked the owner what upgrades he recommended. His advice was to 'just drive'. Wait for things to break, and then consider upgrading. Other than a fan-heatsink combo for the motors and controllers... these things really don't need anything until your driving improves. The one thing we did upgrade ('change' is probably a better term) is paddle tires for the beach. We didn't even try the normal tires in the sand. They might have worked, but the paddle tires are incredible in the sand. I read a suggestion to reduce the gearing for sand... but the controller and motor seem to last the same amount of time as on other surfaces. In conclusion... I could not be happier with the Slash 4x4. If you want a hobby-grade car that will allow for fixing and upgrading as you get further into the sport, and your driving improves... I don't think there is a better RC car. ... show more

  • Excellent truck, 100% satisfied with my choice.
This truck is amazing. I purchased a Slash on a recommendation from a friend who raced SCT for years. While the Slash may not be the best racer from what I can tell, its going to be one of the most rugged and forgiving trucks and is possibly the best basher. I am very impressed with the design and it just feels tough. Layout and build was done with a clear goal of ease of maintenance and extreme durability. Out of the box the Velineon/VXL-3s system is screaming fast. I set mine up with a Turnigy Graphene Panther 5000mAh 3S lipo rated for 75-150C discharge and it feels like the car has rocket boosters. I purchased additional pinions right off the bat but so far I haven't even felt the need to move to larger pinion than the stock 13 tooth just yet because it's already nuts and I want to get a solid skill set down before I gear for more speed. As for beginner use, this might be a little bit intense. Maybe go with a 2S lipo or start with NiMh packs. My only concern as far as a possible weak point are the shocks really. They just don't strike me as being as tough as the rest of the car but only time will tell. Otherwise I might seek the hop-up aluminum option. Future plans are to possibly target a 4-pole sensored motor like a Castle,HobbyWing, or Tekin but for now I am very happy with the stock sensorless 10 turn 2-pole setup and I would imagine most people would find it satisfying for everything until competition level. Also, I purchased my truck as an open box display model from Connecting Point and the truck is in mint condition and I honestly cannot tell it was ever touched. ... show more
