  • Best thermostat for Trane equipment
Our Trane Heat Pump XL16i (older model) was designed for this thermostat. What a welcomed difference + the WiFi analytics and controls from our smartphones. Hats off to Nexia! They do what other thermostats should, plus more. This thermostat is not recommended for novice installers / wknd DYI projects. Trane systems require certified/knowledgeable installers to perform as advertised. Even us engineers require Manf’s technical support to ensure proper wiring/programming. That said, the Trane XL824 is the quintessential thermostat for Trane equipment owners that need remote control. ... show more

  • Unnecessarily Complicated!
My builder installed this thermostat with my Trane gas furnace. What a pain! Ridiculous and completely unnecessary features. But he showed me how to use it. Temperature up. Temperature down. Change the filter. The 31-page user guide shows you a lot more that it can do, but you won't need any of that. Although, to be perfectly frank, I might have used the program setting - if I could have figured it out! All this tech gee-whiz is simply to justify to $373 price tag. On top of that, the temperature reading is 4 degrees off. Bah! I figure that turning it up and down manually every day will cause it to die within a year or so and then I can look for something else. Simplify, for heaven's sakes!!! ... show more

  • Saved us a lot of money installing ourselves
Seller provided us with the exact item we were looking for, item as described . After trying so many other thermostats that turned out to not be compatible we finally got the one we needed.

  • To follow the installation instructions.
I had this thermostat in my previous home. I like the ability to program it to control the temp weather it's cold or hot outside. It has an auto for heating and cooling. A true set and forget thremostat.

  • Expensive and hard to use thermostat
Way overly complicated especially if you ever had a Nest or Ecobee. I have spent hours trying to create a schedule and neither the app, touch screen, or online sit were helpful, intuitive, or logical. Don't be surprised if you have to have a technician come out to program this rubiks cube of a thermostat. Also, the touch screen is very non tactile-responsive. Expect a lot of pushing and repeating to get functions to engage. ... show more

  • Great, but a fatal flaw
When we replaced our heat pump a few years ago this is the thermostat our vendor installed. Things were great for about a month until we came home from work and found the screen white and the thermostat too hot to touch. Rebooting failed to bring it back alive. Begrudgingly, the vendor replaced it. All was well with the new one until a few weeks ago when I awoke on a cold winter night and the house temperature was quite low. Ran down to the thermostat and there it was again: white screen, hot to the touch. Rebooted [this amounts to shutting off all the breakers to the HVAC, waiting 30 seconds and then resetting them]. This time the thermostat recovered, though it showed a house temperature of near 80 degrees [obviously from the unit overheating as the actual house temperature was 62]. So, if I go on vacation, would I trust it? Not on our your life. Obviously the unit is now well past the warranty period. We're considering adding an "emergency" thermostat directly on the HVAC unit to at least keep the house from freezing should this happen while we're away. In the interim I have a camera on it all the time. So it looks like you get a month, or a couple of years, but after that odds are really poor. At this price point I can buy 2 of the other WiFi capable programmable thermostats and thus get a longer life cycle. In the software/hardware world we have "watchdogs" that oversee programming or chip failures. That doesn't seem to exist on any of these high-end thermostats. And that's - in my opinion - negligence when the stakes might be your plumbing and the damage it can do if frozen or a pet's life. ... show more

  • Wi-Fi never stays connected
It would be a 4-star if worked properly (-1 start because it's slow and bulky). However, I've had this for almost a year with two large issues. The first is that it emits its own heat And is on the same wall as the air handler, so always reads 5-7 degrees warmer than the room actually is. There's no swing to account for this Secondly, the unit never reconnects to the Wi-Fi after a disconnect, so the large majority of the time I can't use the app, which, happens to be drastically more user friendly for the schedule. Can't change the temp from the bedroom when it's too hot at night... Can't change the temp when on the way back from a trip... Man, I'm SO GRATEFUL I paid for a wi-fi thermostat!! ... show more
