  • Works great after overcoming some bumpy start. C-Wire issue. PRO/CON. Some helpful tips.
Attached are the wires for my old Thermostat (Honeywell CT3500) and Control Board. As you can see the C-Wire is on the Control Board but not on the Thermostat. This means that a C-Wire Adapter (Provided in the box) needs to be installed next to the Control Board. (Realized later that there might be a C-Wire floating in the hole behind the Thermostat. My Thermostat uses batteries, so C-Wire is not required. There is no harm in pulling the wires out from the hole after removing them from the old Thermostat and checking if there is a C-Wire. It is much easier to install if the C-Wire is presented) Now comes to the fun parts for installing the C-Wire Adapter. There are two Y-Wires and one C-Wire on the Control Board. The instructions from the WYZE App did not have this configuration. Called tech support. After several checks, I got the answer to leave the C-Wire open and merge two Y-Wires. It is simple and easy by following the WYZE App instructions and finishing the installation. Turned on the power and again it was straightforward to add the Thermostat to WYZE App. During the testing, heating passed but cooling failed. Called tech support again and some time troubleshooting without success (Tech supports were overall very good, no long waiting time, follow up closely, easy to communicate with both phone and email for pictures etc. The issue was resolved on the same day before tech’s further follow up). Did some research and tried to put back the original C-Wire to the Control Board (with the C-Wire from the C-Wire Adapter on the same terminal). It worked surprisingly. Later it was realized that the diagram from the WYZE App did indicate that the original C-Wire should be kept with C-Wire from the C-Wire Adapter (See attached picture). But there is no word. PRO: The Thermostat looks nice (see attached for installed) and well made. Though there were some bumps for me due to non-standard configuration, the installation and setup are overall clear and straightforward. CON: WYZE Thermostat did not qualify for local utility discount or rebate. Some helpful tips: 1. Do not forget to remove the plastic cover sheet, otherwise the motion sensor to activate the display won’t work (Still works if you touch or turn the display wheel with the sheet on). 2. The Thermostat was first tested without fastening to the wall (So it wouldn’t damage the wall in case it was not working). Got the problem to remove the face panel. Finally, a small flat head screwdriver was used to pry it out through the gap. If I knew this issue early, I would have used a small Bolt/Nut to fasten the base plate to the optional wall plate (Provided in the box). So, it will be easy to just pull the face panel out by holding the wall plate. This problem will not exist if you follow the instructions and fasten the base plate to the wall before putting the face panel. 3. Make sure the setting value in the Temperature Preferences and Schedule is indeed what you wanted to prevent surprising action of the HVAC system. 4. There is no harm to calibrate the temperature and add temperature correction in Advanced settings. Mine was 2~3 degrees off. The temperature correction is a better place to adjust the temperature setting temporarily while keeping it at Auto. Here is an example: turn on the AC 1degree cooler – it is much easier just to add 1 degree in the temperature correction. Decrease 1 degree (Got 1 degree hotter) if you want to save energy. After using it for about a week, the Thermostat ran well as expected and the App is easy to use. Update rating to 5-star from 4-star after running for more than three weeks: Never has issue and is easy to control. Update after 9 months: never had a problem; found out that the climate sensor (default is the room sensor) can also be used to control the room temperature with rules; in case there is wifi-off issue, do not reset from the device, instead reset by power off and on through the power panel. ... show more

  • Great WiFi Thermostat
Love this thermostat, so much so, I bought a second one. Easy to install, easy to use on the thermostat itself. The app also is good for controlling. It takes a bit of getting used to, to understand the home and away versus just on/off and the schedule. My wife really loves the motion detection when you walk by so it shows the temp and the color scheme for heat / cool / not running. ... show more

  • Skip it!
I really wish I liked this. I have several other Wyze products, they aren't the best in their field but they usually get their job done in a cost effective manner. Their cameras, for instance, you won't be able to count pimples on someone's face but if all you care about is knowing whether or not someone is there and who it is, they work great. I was hoping for the same with their thermostat. I just needed something that would be connected to wifi and I could run a schedule on remotely since it's for a location we are infrequently at. This seemed to be the ticket. The installation was straightforward-ish. It's a thermostat, it's not too hard to install...but the app forces you to walk through their entire handheld installation process that takes 20 minutes or so. There's no "Skip" button. That's only slightly annoying because you only have to do it once, right? Nope. Anytime the device is reset or it is removed and readded to the app it forces you to do it over. It really needs a decision tree after hitting the Plus button that says "I've already installed the device" or "I need help". Extra super annoying is that it demands that you tell it which wires you have to get through the process....so you have to pull it off the wall any time you reset it to see the wires. It also forces you to test the heat and AC and all that. Extra bonus, it keeps saying I have a wire connected that is definitely not connected. It functionally works by telling it to ignore it, but still annoying. So still, how often do you really have to go around resetting your thermostat? I've had a pair of ecobees at our house for three years and I've only had to reset one of them one time. Well, this Wyze thermostat I've had to reset pretty much weekly or even more often. It loses wifi connection *constantly*. To make things even more bizzare, it doesn't actually lose the connection. The router shows it attached and even the thermostat status page shows a strong signal, connection, and IP address...but the thermostat shows disconnected as does the app. The only way to get it back is a full hard reset which seems to work for a few days then it falls off again. Really annoying since the whole purpose of this thing was to be able to remotely turn the HVAC on before we drive out. Now I have to spend the first 20 minutes resetting the thermostat then waiting on the place to cool down. Come winter it will be an even bigger issue since I'll have no way to know if the heater is keeping it above freezing. I'm past the return period but it will be going in the trash. ... show more

  • Smooth install and activation, problems with W2 heat
Tried a few of those wifi connected devices, and this one stand way above the others in this price range. As i was bench testing it, it reminded me that it was aware of that, and showed me (as attached) the wires that were not attached. Nice touch! Works well with google home, and the wise app, both locally connected and remotely. [-] Would be nice if there was a way to set the 2nd stage threshold, maybe next FW rev ? UPDATE: After having two of them running, there's an issue with the W2 heat. The expectation is: If the temperature difference is large W2 should be running, and once it gets closer to the setpoint W2 should turn off and W1 takes it from there. What is does is weird, once it gets close to the setpoint is kicks in W2 ... ? And my previous thermostats, had no issue in handling two stage heat. I'll reach out to support to see if they have any actual explanation on how this thermostat handles W2. Stay tuned. UPDATE 2: After an hour on the phone with Wyze support, the issue is simple, W1 will not be energized when W2 is called upon. My goodman furnace needs BOTH energized to engage the high heat. Hopefully they will fix that in the next firmware release, the current one is v1.2.1. Note W2 will be engaged when the temperature differential is larger than 4 F, and also if the set temperature is not reached within 30 minutes. Wyse support was very helpful :) ... show more
