I’ve had a nest for at least 8 years and have gone through all the newer models. This one is definitely a big step above the others. First it uses the google home app. So say goodbye to your old nest app. It sits away from the wall a bit more, kind of like a mushroom. This comes with a wall plate and additional sensor (we put ours in the bedroom to keep it comfortable during the night). The screen is huge. The bronze color is stunning and it’s very reflective and mirrored. It seems to almost have a 3D look to the screen. It definitely has depth when looking directly at the screen. Set up only took 20 minutes. You can also choose between four home screens. It doesn’t keep the memory from an older nest thermostat, so it has to re-learn your home, system and awake routine, unless you manually set it up. Overall it works as described. I had a Gen 3 for years. I then saw the Gen 4 (came out Aug 20, 2024), and even though Gen 3 was ok,, decided to upgrade to Gen 4, The display is larger,, --BUT-- you can't adjust the brightness like you could on Gen 2 and Gen 3, As you approach, the unit lights up,, but you cant see the numbers on the display till you are on top of the thermostat itself as the number display is --dim--. I'm sending my gen 4 back to Amazon for refund. It seems the people at Google Nest did --NOT-- think this through at all. I suggest you do --NOT-- buy this Gen 4, unless Google Nest has a software fix. Or buy it and realize the display is --dim-- and hard to read from a distance. ... show more

I originally got the high-end Ecobee; however, the temperature reading didn't seem right. I tried some adjustments as recommended by support, but I expect something to work as is. That's where the Nest Gen 4 came in. The gold therm looks astonishing, and the the thing works. Best of all, I can select different faces, and I don't have to be standing right in front of the thing to view the temperature conditions. It also measures room humidity and outdoor temperature. I don’t have any issues with either of my new thermostats display wise, might be a room placement thing (my thermostats aren’t in direct sunlight ever). The included temperature sensors work great as did my existing ones. I’m upgrading from the learning thermostats that had the frosted glass look and had no trouble with installation, software setup just worked the first time. The matter support worked without a hitch on HomeKit and Home Assistant. And it seems that it’s doing a better job than my old one at keeping the rooms I care about comfortable. The master bedroom is always perfect now after a being in use for a week or so. I really like the weather display when I walk by it in the hallway or the dining room. Really great! Easy to install. My last house had a 3rd gen, not really sure if the upgrade is just cosmetic, but I’m really happy with it. Prolly buy another for my other unit when they sell it without the extra sensor…that I’m not sure I need. Edit: changed from 5 stars to 3. Why on earth is there a thermostat that doesn’t have a circulate mode for the fan? I can manually turn the fan on, but there is no circ mode mode, which usually keeps the fan running at least 30% of the day regardless of whether the air is being conditioned or heated. In the fall, my unit can go hours without needing to condition, so the air get stale, and different rooms all get hot or cold. Just give us the freaking circ mode in an update. Edit 2: back to 5 stars. In the google home app, there’s a button called schedules. In schedules there’s a tab for fan. Under fan you can set it to 15, 30, or 45 mins per hour and it kinda works like circulation mode. ... show more

A this point, I feel the Gen 3 is a better overall product. The Gen 4 has nice physical styling and the added Matter compatibility but that's where the pros stop. Combined with the mirror-like display and fine fonts used in the display, it is very hard to read, especially if the thermostat is mount in an area where reflections are common. The loss of the Blue (cooling) and orange (heating) graphic is a disappointment. The Google Home app does not offer fine adjustment of temperature (4 quarter steps between degrees) as the Nest app did. I am seriously considering returning the Gen 4 and purchasing a Gen 3. ... show more

For off. The 4th gen IS NOT compatible with the nest app nor 1st gen temperature sensors. If you have sensors or 2 systems and you only replace one - your sensors will be orphaned and you will be stuck with one in the google home app. Personally I dislike the google home app for climate controls. As others have said the display is somewhat dim as well. It is certainly a step up as far as boot time and “smoothness” of the UI goes. Beyond that I cannot recommend this generation. I will be returning mine and replacing my bad gen 3 with another gen 3. ... show more
