  • Fun game!
Style: Berlin
If you like Ticket to Ride but don't have a half hour or more to play a game, check out one of the city games, like Berlin (there are about a half dozen of these city maps). It only takes minutes to learn and minutes to play. It comes in a small box and would be easy to pack on a road trip. Also, this is a standalone game, not an extension pack. ... show more

  • Ticket to ride
Style: New York
Few of us have come this far in our gaming adventures without crossing paths with at least one of the Ticket to Ride games. For many of us it is among the first games we play. In my case, Ticket to Ride: Europe was my first ‘real’ board game and I still have it in my collection. Ticket to Ride: New York is a newer edition and offers a smaller/quicker gaming option. Let’s see how it holds up. Gameplay Unsurprisingly, Ticket to Ride: New York plays quite similarly to the other games in the series. While instead of train routes you are connecting cab routes, mechanically the games are the same. For an added bit of strategy, there are tourist attractions that reward the player for passing as part of their route, so keep that in mind when you’re placing your cabs! On each turn players have the option of drawing cards, playing cabs or acquiring new routes for scoring. Components The art on the cards is functional and the cards themselves are of a good quality. The cab pieces are as solid as the train pieces from any other version in the Ticket to Ride series. The game board is quite small, but this is by design. This game is meant to be quick to set up and tear down, and is even a good option for travelling. Instead of a score track, the game includes a score pad and pencil. My thoughts If you enjoy any of the Ticket to Ride games, you will likely enjoy this more condensed version. Myself, I don’t get the larger Ticket to Ride games out anymore unless I am playing with non gamers. That makes the New York edition an asset in my collection as it allows the Ticket to Ride experience in less than 20 minutes compared to the 45 - 60 minute larger experience. I also play this edition the most as a 2 player experience. Verdict: At this point, I would suggest this for anyone who may be a little burnt out on Ticket to Ride games; someone who still looks fondly upon the game but may not want the larger time commitment. Also, if you’re already into games but haven’t experienced the Ticket to Ride games, this is a simple entry point at a smaller price point. If you did not like the previous Ticket to Ride games this one will do nothing to change your mind. ... show more

  • Compact & fun!
Style: San Francisco
It was smaller than I expected, but it was still totally worth it. Instructions are easy to follow, artwork is really cute, and the game is really versatile to where we will probably never get bored of it. I feel like this is a classic🙌

  • Fun game using some strategy.
Style: New York
I did have to read through the rules 3 times to get a good grasp on how to play. But once we played the game it all made sense. My 8 year found it fun and challenging to build his line to his destinations and was eager to build a 3rd line. He also got to learn the different parts of New York city so when we do visit New York he will know a few things and places to see. The game is not all pure luck but some strategy on what cards to pick up and how to use them which makes the game fun. If your kids like the Monopoly kids version game they will like this game. Next we we buy the bigger US railroad Ticket to Ride game and "accidently" learn more about where different US cities are located. ... show more

  • Very good but not a clear must-have like 1910 expansion
Style: Game Expansion
I’d primarily recommend this for those trying to wring a little extra replay value out of their existing Ticket to Ride Europe set. If you enjoy Ticket to Ride Europe and have already tried a number of other Ticket to Ride maps then this expansion should provide some interesting variations which you might enjoy. However, the 1912 expansion isn't the must-buy, never-play-without expansion for Ticket to Ride Europe in the way that the 1910 expansion was for the original Ticket to Ride. This is a good set, and a great opportunity to add some variation to play. Allow me to draw the distinctions between this and the advantages the 1910 set brought to the original base game. 1. The cards The original Ticket to Ride had small play cards which the 1910 set immediately fixed. In addition, the 1910 game variant which incorporates all of the cards (The Mega Game) becomes the defacto choice when brought into play. By contrast, Ticket to Ride Europe cards aren't mini-sized so there's no improvement made by incorporating the 1912 expansion. Additionally, the warehouses and depots variation isn't necessarily recommended for the Mega Game 1912 variant (playing with all routes) and it’s not clear to me that the Mega Game variant for Ticket to Ride Europe is more fun (see the next section). 2. Impact upon play The 1910 expansion makes the original Ticket to Ride much more competitive and adds more differentiation between games. Ticket to Ride Europe is (relative to the original Ticket to Ride) a generally more competitive map as-is. In fact, the addition of routes in 1912 can make the Europe map quite cutthroat with 4-5 players. This outcome is probably desirable for some but off-putting for others (such as myself). The depots and warehouses expansion actually offsets some elements of the competitiveness already present in Ticket to Ride Europe so it's a good fit for this particular map and variants like Big Cities. I haven’t tried it on other Ticket to Ride maps, though that is possible, because I find the play board and pieces add complexity that can slow play for certain players. It’s a nice variant for experienced players to test out (many of whom may dismiss it as an equivalent of the Monopoly free parking house rule) but it’s not as natural an expansion as simply more routes. Overall, this expansion brought me back to a map I enjoy playing well enough. However, this expansion didn’t revive the Europe map in such a way that it permanently attached itself to that particular map set, nor did it cause me to change the frequency with which I play the Europe map over the long term. ... show more
