  • Got a new one. This works fine.
Style: Speak & Spell
The media could not be loaded. First one didn't work. Returned it and got a new one, which works fine.

  • Amazing for kids learning to spell
Style: Speak & Spell
This was nice looking and amazing for my kid who had issues spelling. It was easy for him to understand and to try and figure out how to use it. It wasn't too big and my elementary school student didn't have to worry about something to heavy to hold. It was very entertaining for them and it kept them wanting to keep learning. It's affordable and helps a lot and makes the kids excited to learn. I will be using this to help my other kids or younger family members to learn how to spell like it helped my elementary student. ... show more

  • I just felt ten years old again
Style: Speak & Spell
Back in the day when Pac Man first came out, LOL. The Speak & Spell was my fav toy. Im a word-nerd to this day. I know my grandchildren wont love it like I did because of all the competing tech out there now, but just maybe they will enjoy it. Its great on a road trip with no service :)

  • The voice is very similar if not the same as the original
Style: Speak & Spell
This is close, and I mean really close to the old speak and spell from many, many years ago! I remember playing with this toy for hours on end as a child, and so I felt like I needed to get one for my great nephew. The monotonous, annoying voice that they use on this is almost identical if not the same one from the original speak and spell. I can't tell for sure, but it seems almost like thia new speak and spell might be slightly smaller, or just weigh a little bit less than the original. I'm not exactly sure because I don't have an old speaking spell to compare to but it definitely feels a little different. It doesn't feel this solid as the original speaking spell did either, I'm definitely afraid to drop it and feel like I need to be cautious with it. My great nephew was not super into it, because they have way cooler toys in 2022, but to me this will always be a cool toy for me to play with even if he doesn't enjoy it. ... show more

  • Excellent customer service
Style: Speak & Spell
I bought this for my then 6-year-old son for Christmas last year. We both enjoyed using it together (I had a TI Speak & Spell when I was a kid). As others have pointed out, the voice and display are modern-retro: not like the original, but not always easy to understand and read, either. However, overall it's an enjoyable product, true to the original. After sitting on a shelf for a few months during the summer etc. we picked it up again recently, only to discover that the display was hard to read. We tried changing batteries, pressing the reset button, etc. I finally submitted a message with photos to Basic Fun's customer service. They responded overnight, saying: "We were concerned to receive the below information as we take every possible care to ensure that our products meet with our customer’s expectations in all respects. We are shipping you a Speak and Spell replacement today - Fedex tracking # below. I have reviewed the item myself and it is working properly." I was (and still am) floored. Honestly, I didn't expect much of a response at all. We're talking about a $35 children's toy, but they responded like it was a premium product, no questions asked. You've got to give them an A+ for that alone. ... show more

  • A Nostalgic Try, but Not Quite the Original
Style: Speak & Spell
I recently picked up the retro-inspired Speak & Spell for my kids, hoping it would bring back some of that classic 80s charm. While it does capture some of the nostalgia with its iconic graphics and gameplay, it's just not quite the same as the original. The voice, while trying to replicate the classic speech synthesizer, ends up being more annoying than endearing. It's a bit disappointing that it doesn't fully capture the essence of the original, but despite this, it has proven to be a useful learning tool for my younger kids. They enjoy the various play modes and the different challenge levels, which keep them engaged. Overall, it's a good educational toy, though it falls short of the classic experience I remember. ... show more

  • Really poor enunciation makes it impossible to understand some words.
Style: Speak & Spell
This thing really sucks compared to the original version. Really poor enunciation makes it impossible to understand some words, and the buttons are not accurate. If you want the true Speak & Spell magic, you'll need to get the vintage version second hand, this new version is nearly unusable.
