I have several of these units and can't say enough about how well they keep mosquitoes and gnats away. I do use 2 units for my 20 x 12 foot deck. Manufacturers always tend to over exaggerate the effective range on products like this. I use the half rule. If it says 15ft range I assume its going to be 7 maybe 9 feet which is why I use two units at the same time. If the bugs are really bad I sometimes add a 3rd unit but they do keep the bugs away. It's important to realize that you should turn these on and place them outside at least 15 minutes before you enter the area. This is actually what the Manufacturer suggests anyway. They do take time to heat up and for the vapor to start coming out of the units and to spread around the sitting area. As for the blue pads, I hear some complaints they turn white in less than 4 hours. Turning white doesnt mean its not working. The oil is still being emitted even when it turns completely white. In fact just having them in the sun and humidity will make them turn white but it still takes about 4 hours to exhaust the pad. One other thing to note is once you open the package the clock starts ticking. If you used it on day one for 2 hours and then don't use it for a couple days they will have dried out and no longer work and a new pad needs to be inserted. With that said its not the greatest if you just plan to sit out for an hour but they are still the best solution I have found. I ordered the rechargeable unit that uses a liquid cartridge instead of the pads to see if these are better for shorter usage times. I'll update this review once I try it. Update on Rechargeable version with the liquid cartridges... This is the way to go! Theybwork just as good as the butane models with the pads. They actually heat up faster too. When I'm done with them I turn them off and they are good to go even days later since the liquid doesn't evaporate from the wick. No pads pads or butane cartritges to deal with. When repellent cartridge is empty just drop a new one in. Couldnt be simpler. Note! The cartridge that comes with the unit is only partially filled, just like when you buy a new printer. Mosquitos vanished within a few minutes of turning it on. The pads didn't last as long as advertized, and the igniter did not work on a second unit I bought. But the one unit worked perfectly and made a huge difference in our camping trip in Wyoming.

This is a nice quality product - and is easy to use. My children have it and it works well for them. We used it in our yard but still had mosquitoes biting. I can't blame the product - maybe the issue is local to our area (?)

I am one of those unfortunates that happen to be a mosquito magnet. People all around me can be untroubled while I need to flail at the hordes of ravening mosquitos who are obsessed with my tasty, tasty blood. I enjoy sitting outside in the evening but I don’t enjoy the itchy welts later, or the creepy whine of the attackers around my face. I hate drenching myself in poison, and other remedies are never effective. So far this product seems to be working quite well, with an absence of mosquitos when we have used it, although it’s sometimes hard to tell why. The mosquitos don’t seem to be awful right now, although earlier in the season when we had some horribly hot days they seemed to immediately Velcro to all exposed skin that was outside. Will test further, although we used it with success in our most mosquito-prone area. One thing I did not like is that although the photo with the product seems to show food and drink within the radius of protection, sitting by the people, instructions recommend keeping food and drink out of the protected radius. So if I want to sit outside on the patio swing with my can of Diet Coke and a snack on a table beside me, that’s going to be problematic. I guess just keep that in mind, especially with children. I ended up with the cheapest model first, that has fuel cartridges and then the little patches that go on top to be heated and disperse the repelling agent. Not fond of the thought of liquid fuel lying around, so I ordered a model that heats after being charged electronically - and found that it uses a liquid cartridge of the dispersal agent! Guess I can’t get away from the liquid. I will need to look at other models to see if I can get the best of both worlds and no liquid cartridges. Hope the combo of the two will provide the ultimate protection, since apparently breezes can also affect its effectiveness. Looking forward to a less itchy summer! ... show more

The first thermacel unit I purchased worked for a few months but then the orange light would not come on and unit did not heat. I purchased a second unit thinking it was a fluke, but after going through only one fuel source, same thing….cannot turn unit on……..when it worked it was great, but to have 2 units fail it is just wrong….there has to be something better on the market. Sadly I cannot recommend this product. ... show more

I really do think the Thermacell products are worth the money, I have reviewed others in the past. Check them out in my profile, especially the multi-insect refills that can be used with this product. This Patio Shield is no different. This one is fuel based, with each fuel cartridge lasting 12 hours. The magic is in the pads that slip in at the top, they last about 4 hours each. When the color of the pad changes to almost all white, you it’s time for a new one When they heat up, they release the repellent. There is no scent, which is great. It’s easy to turn on and you can check to see if it’s still burning by looking thru the small window to see the fuel burning. It’s super light weight and portable, and can be place just about anywhere. Mosquitoes love me, this is one of the few products that actually keep them away from me. If you have trouble with Noseeums, I recommend the multi-insect pack. That works with mosquitoes, noseeums and black flies. ... show more
