  • Lovely book
I’m a senior citizen who bought the book for myself. I live on a beautiful river that starts in the mountains, travels by my house and continues traveling to the St. Lawrence River and eventually the ocean. I presently have the book on my coffee table.

  • With Water, All Life Is Possible; Another Book In a Brilliant Series
This book is a part of a brilliant series of fold-out books (some refer to them as concertina books – i.e., books that pop-up and such. To me, it’s more of fold-out map, rather than origami). In this instance, it’s all about tracing/starting at the origins of a stream/river, high in elevation, and then following its course, to its terminus, which is the ocean. Along the route are many opportunities to learn that with water, all life is possible. Further, how water impacts the environment, and all living organic matters, including the animal kingdom, and humans, in so many, many ways. The artwork is imaginative, varied, and lovely. The story line is as old as time, it’s about discovery and journey, opening avenues, search venues, all in the process of adventure and learning. This makes it an appealing book to all ages, but primarily to younger school aged children. It can be stretched across the floor This is my first book that allows me to stretch the pages out across the floor, as in about 120” across the floor, which calculates at (10’). That’s right, the thick hardcover and the extremely board like pages are all connected and allow me to stretch this book out across the floor for (10’). The pages are double sided, so in theory, there is (20’) of layout. That’s a lot of illustration (which I think is wonderful). Within those pages a reader and observed can follow the river and read about what can and/or does take place. It’s brilliant in conception and comprehension. Fun illustrations. For new and seasoned readers, the print and colorful drawings are easy on the eyes. The words may tax new readers. The drawings cover many scenes. It’s fun It’s fun for me to watch young readers to become engaged with this. w I look forward to having opportunity to collect more in this wonderful series. Author & Illustrator Style The words are written smoothly, great ground for an elementary school student to cut their teeth on and to follow and understand the illustrations, which are engaging, to keep a child interested. A tool for all Overall, this is a valuable tool, for both young and not so young. Gleaning facts that are fun and interesting. It helps to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the many ways water touches everything, both good and bad. How was this book received My edition was “NOT” independently packaged and sealed. I would have preferred it being encased within cellophane type plastic. Reason being, I prefer books being sealed, in some shape or form, to protect its integrity and maintain pristine condition. Measurement My copy was a non-jacketed hardcover book, that did have a paper band for some pages and had a cover that was textured. The book has a below average number of pages, at about (20), but they are huge pages and measure about 10” wide, 13” tall, and 1/64th of an inch, thick, closed, the book is just over ½” thick. Why was this published? From my take, the author was looking to educate children on what is around us, whether blue skies above, hard surfaces below, or those rivers that run through surroundings. Rivers are much more than bodies of water; they have a cause-and-effect kind of impact. Copyright year (Publisher) 2023 Publication date October 24, 2023 Printed price The printed price, $26 US | $32 CAN – November 2023 eBook? It’s “not” available for a Kindle; this is something that needs to be physical. I did not see a Library of Congress Number. Weight The book weighs-in at just over (1) pound. Printed and Bound where? China. Publisher Quarto. Is it fiction? Not totally Can a novice grasp it? Yes. Please refer to Amazon for pics of this copywritten work. I was excited to select this, and more excited when I first paged through it, I have no significant negative comments. It’s an award-winning book, for good reason. I hope my thoughts offered a bit of helpful information. ... show more

  • Bad for young kids
On one hand, I think the concept of it folding out as one huge page, since it is one long river, is interesting. On the other hand this makes it a bad book for young kids. My almost 2 year old and my 4 year old just want to unfold it all the way and walk on it like a walking path, which is dangerous for them and bad for the book. Unfortunately that ruins it for us. It also is just hard to read with folding it all of the way out. It's almost 10 feet long and I don't usually have that kind of space open to spread out a book. It can be read without folding it out all of the way, so if you keep it out of reach of your kids generally and just get it out to read that way, it is possible to keep it in decent condition. Aside from the odd formatting it is an interesting book. It starts in the beginning as the beginning of the river and goes through different areas that the river flows until it gets to the end. It shows different animals and plant life, as well as cities vs. country. ... show more

  • Beautiful book but the fold out is too long.
The illustrations and colors are gorgeous, and the story is educational. Pages are engaging and active with a lot of animals and details in the illustrations. I do like fold out books, but, to me, this book's fold out is too big and long. Even though the pages are made of a heavier cardstock, I can just imagine this book not lasting long before sections become ripped out because only one page is attached to the book and the rest are a fold out. The copy I received was a hard cover copy that had parts of the cover raised, mainly the animal illustrations on the cover. There was no book jacket and the paper book ban around the book was ripped, most likely from shipping without some type of sealed wrapper around it to protect the entire book. This book was written for ages 5-7. ... show more

  • Beautifully Written and Beautifully Illustrated
The River That Flows Beside Me by Charlotte Guillain, and illustrated by Jo Empson is my introduction to the Look Closer series of books. It is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated, and well crafted concertina (accordion style) book. It traces a river from its origin to its completion. Along the way, the author guides the reader to learn about everything associated with the river: from every kind of wildlife to man’s interaction with the river and how it affects both wildlife and humans. It is a perfect way to teach a child the beauty, importance, and usefulness of nature—in this case, a river. The design, text, and illustrations are impeccably done. Not only a great resource, but a source of wonder and enjoyment for a child or an appreciative adult. Even the embossed cover reflects the attention to detail. A lovely book to give as a gift, and certainly one you will want to explore with a child. I’m giving it to my 7 year old grandson for Christmas, but I plan to read and explore it with him, and hopefully, awaken in him the beauty of books and nature. Well done. ... show more
