Description

The ultimate biography of the ultimate subject—planet Earth! Featuring humorous interviews, bold illustrations, cutting-edge science, and four and a half billion years of history, readers ages 10 and up will get to know the place we call home and the importance of caring for our planet well into the future! Here it is—the celebrity biography we didn’t know we wanted, and now can’t get enough of—the story of Earth, our fascinating little home in the solar system with all its crazy life forms and dramatic geological ages. Travel back through the eras, eons, and ages, and discover the major extinction events (sorry, dinosaurs!) the introduction of new species (hello, humans!), and how the land shifted and changed over time to become what we know today (Pangea who?) From the chaotic Hadean eon with its huge oceans of molten rock to today’s Cenozoic era, aka the Age of Mammals, get an in-depth look at how Earth has changed in the past and how it’s changing now. Learn about the Great Oxygenation Event. Meet some of the planet’s wildest life- forms, like Megatherium—a sloth as big as an elephant—and Hallucigenia—the walking, spiky worm so named because the scientists who first discovered the fossils thought they were hallucinating. Watch the continents separate, crash together, and re-form. And catch up on the basics, like why the sky is blue and how tectonic plates create mountains, earthquakes and volcanoes. It's the ultimate biography of the best home in the galaxy for kids who are history buffs, science buffs, or just plain curious to know more about the world around them! Read more

  • Really fun boo
This is a great and accessible book for the 10+ club. I read it before giving it to my nephew and, quite frankly, learned a lot. The text and illustrations make for a super fun read.

  • Great science book for younger kids
Great book that uses personification to entice younger kids to learn about our little planet. This book is very colorful and has enlarged print. I do think the grade level noted on the product page is aimed a tad high. I would say 4th grade is a good level for this book. My 10-year-old liked it, my 11-year-old wasn't that interested. This definitely also depends on what your kids are into. My youngest did do a presentation on the moon and on volcanoes this year, so this book was spot on for him. I have a middle schooler as well, and he reads well beyond the level present in this book. Based on my experiences, I don't think this book will work for 6th and 7th graders (product page says this book is for grades 5-7). I think the language is too simple for that and the drawings are too cartoonish for that age. My youngest also asked me why some pictures had many details and then some others had hardly any. He's right, there seemed to be a lack of effort in some depictions. Hence the star deduction. Overall, this is a beautiful book with lots of interesting information. I would recommend it for 9-10-year-olds. ... show more

  • Engaging and Fun Read
My 6 year old daughter received this book from her Auntie and she absolutely loves it. Its is educational as well as engaging. It allows for great questions to be asked from the readers and it provides a lot of difficult and complicated information in a way that is accessible to younger learners and readers. We are simply reading this for pleasure together and not for a science project, and my daughter still wants to read a new chapter every night. If I'm being honest, I'm learning new things too from this book! ... show more

  • Engaging for children
My 11 year old loves this book. She's fascinated by earth history and found this really engaging. Lots of history, goes into a lot of detail so not for the casual reader. Nice illustrations.

  • Covers a lot of ground (no pun intended)
This book covers a lot, including the formation of earth, genes, biology, environment, plants, and animals. It's organized by eons and periods. There's a lot of new information, and a lot I'd forgotten. It's a great read for kids. It's aimed at ages 10 and up, but I'm reading it out loud with a younger child, who is enjoying it. This book starts off with an "interview" between a Pencil and Earth. Throughout the text, there are some callout boxes, where the Earth or the pencil is talking. That's fun for kids, and it's helpful to look at things from Earth's perspective. A conversation between the 2 characters can look like text messages, which is probably relatable for kids. There are also text boxes called "Explained!" where certain concepts are explored in more detail. The book is full color, with illustrations that lean towards cartoons. This makes the material fun and interesting for kids. This has a pronunciation guide at the end, which I do not see often. This is very helpful for kids, so they can say the words out loud and learn the terms. ... show more

  • My kids are really enjoying this book
This book has been a big hit in the house. Both my 7 and 10 year olds are thoroughly enjoying this. My son told me that essentially this book presents the information using two characters: Pencil and Earth. Throughout the book Pencil interviews Earth and they have cute little back and forth dialogue in between the text of facts. Each page has at least one or more pictures appealing to my 7 year old who seems to shy away from books with no pictures. The illustrations are fun and colorful drawing even my 6 year old to pick up and at least flip through the book. Overall this is a fun and engaging book filled with fun illustrations. My kids who haven't really had too much interest in natural history found this book fun and interesting. Review For: The Ultimate Biography of Earth: From the Big Bang to Today! ... show more
