  • Perfect Book for Busy Families with Gorgeous Step By Step Photos and a Variety of Recipes
This cookbook focuses on dinnertime meals. Well organized and filled with recipes for a wide variety of tastes, this book is good for cooks at any level. This book is simply beautiful. Filled with colorful and informative photos (there is a picture for every recipe), this book not only is great to look at but also gives good information for those of us who are competent but not particularly instinctive when it comes to cooking. I especially like the step by step photos so that I can get an idea of what the dish should look at while I am cooking it instead of just hoping it turns out like the finished product. This book is organized by type of meal. With categories such as comfort food, soup for dinner, salad for dinner, breakfast for dinner, the book gives the reader a sense of the different possibilities for meals. There is also several sections on different types of side dishes and even desserts so readers can mix and match main dishes with the sides and desserts they like to make a complete meal. I was especially pleased with the section on freezer meals. While basic and certainly not an attempt to be a treatise on the subject, this section gives readers the opportunity to prepare staples to keep frozen and then provides several different ways that those frozen staples can be used to make different meals. For example, the book provides a recipe for meatballs that can be frozen and then gives recipes for their use in sweet and sour meatballs, Swedish meatballs, etc. This section and the section on quick preparation meals are especially good for busy people who don't have hours to spend in the kitchen to prepare a dinner. This book also has a great variety of recipes. There are recipes that are basic (especially good for picky eaters), meat and potatoes type recipes and then also recipes for more adventurous eaters. I appreciated the variety of recipes because nothing annoys me more than cooking books that are only for gourmet eaters. Although titled Dinnertime, this book has such a great variety of recipes that they can be used all day long. ... show more

  • The pioneer woman cooks again!
This is the 3rd cookbook from Ree Drummond and it encompasses her usual enthusiasm. What some might not like is that the recipes have already been published on her blog. It would have been nice to have more new recipes in here that she could have presented on her show in the future; but the book is a good place to have them organized in and easy to find. There are 2 indexes. One section has them divided into recipes for everyone such as, kid-friendly, cow-girl friendly, fancy friends, neighbors in need and then there is an index by main ingredient Recipes include; breakfast for dinner, salad for dinner, soup for dinner, freezer food, 16-minute meals, pasta, comfort classics, new favorites, veggie sides, starchy sides, quick desserts. Ree does use some shortcuts, not everything is prepared from ‘scratch’, but then she will tell how to make your own pico de gallo, caramel sauce, cheese biscuits or refrigerator rolls. There are photos of the recipes and also the step by step instructions. She also includes photographs of her family, friends and the ranch. The pages are colourful and she tells a bit about each recipe and prep tips, also how to stock up the fridge, pantry and freezer. Many recipes have make ahead and variations. The salad section is wonderful, the dessert section is simple. It has no pies or cakes. None of the recipes are that complicated. Many recipes do have a southwestern flavor and use hot sauce or peppers, but if you do not like them, they can be left out or not as much put in. We have prepared and enjoyed sesame chicken salad, buffalo chicken salad, lasagna roll-ups, skillet lasagna, and polo asado – among others that we already fixed from her blog. This would make a wonderful gift for beginning cooks and anyone who likes good simple food that many times is a bit different than the run of the mill comfort food. ... show more

  • I expected "beh" I got "WOW"! Surprisingly good book
Beautiful photos, which is a must for my cooking books. I cannot cook unless I have a visual of the end result. This book has plenty of images, including of the preparation steps, and not only of the recipes (not that I need to know what this woman's family or farm look like... but, since she wants to share, that's ok too). Most important, the recipes are very clearly explained and are extremely doable. Nothing fancy. It's a recipe book for "family cooking": I am vegetarian so I have access only to some and not all of the recipes: everything I tried so far came out perfect, no need to make my own "edits" or adjustments, it all worked out very well. I also love that the author (who, my husband just told me, is very famous... I never heard of her, sorry) provides little practical asides with alternatives in case one is missing an ingredient and doesn't feel like riding to the supermarket. I am not American: therefore I love that the author is giving me a chance to learn some "real Americana" stuff, which I usually get to taste only in restaurants and diners. EASY TO USE, EASY TO UNDERSTAND, BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED, GREAT PRINT QUALITY, REASONABLY PRICED, INTERESTING RECIPES EXPLAINED INTELLIGENTLY ENOUGH TO BE REPRODUCED WITHOUT PROBLEMS. p.s.: Like ALL recipe books published in America, however, this one too has poorly thought-out indexes. But that's the fault of editors and publishing houses. ... show more

I've purchased used books from GlentheBookseller over the years and have never been disappointed. The book is like new and came quickly. Also, it's the Pioneer Woman. What's not to love? It is a terrific book full of practical recipes you actually want to make.
