**100 Mile Update: Actually, I'm closer to 150 miles now, in under 3 weeks.. The scooter is actually working better now than it did out of the box, I'm getting 18-19mph now, sometimes 20 or even higher (the speedometer maxes out at 20). I'm wondering if the bearings and stuff needed to get worked in..? Everything still feels solid and is holding up. I'm very happy with this purchase. Including the cost of the 2-warranty, in less than a month I've pro-rated the cost of this scooter down to less than $2 per mile, which is cheaper than Uber. Original review: First, I need to preface this by saying this is my first e-scooter, and first time on a scooter in general. Also, for purposes of performance review, I am 6'2" and 230lbs, with average athletic ability. I live in a rural/small town area near Buffalo, NY, with varying types of road terrain and conditions. I bought the Swagtron Swagger 5 during a spring sale at a $199 price point. I did an exhausting amount of research on all available e-scooters in that price range, and the SG5 seemed to outshine the others in power, load capacity, and durability. It arrived on-time, well packaged, with no damage. I was a little bummed that this model does not come with a phone mount, I would have rather traded that for the bottle holder.. Everything went together alright, and it charged with no problem. I purchased a cheap bluetooth speaker to clip on, and I was good to go. On the first day, my son and I put about 10 miles on it, just around the neighborhood on paved streets. By the end of the second day, I was confident enough on it to take it about 4.5 miles out from home, on busier roads. I did put it on to charge at my destination for a little bit. We are now on Day 7, and I have put nearly 60 miles on it. As for performance, I have no complaints yet. It picks right up and carries me along, usually around 14-16mph depending on the road. I no longer use this on sidewalks, as it's illegal in my area, but also they are too rough and uneven. This scooter does not have any shocks, so you will feel every crack you roll over. I have had this thing up and down some hills, it has not quit on me yet, although it does slow right down by the top of a long hill. The best way to climb a hill (if you can safely do so) is to kind of weave back and forth, instead of going straight forward up. I also learned that it's best to let completely off the throttle and slow down to a coast before going down a hill. As for range, I am able to comfortably travel 8-9 miles on the second speed setting with a few moderate inclines on a full charge. Depending on my route, I can go up to the high speed setting for a bit and still get within that range. The brake is a little touchy, especially the first few uses. I only use it as a very last resort. I would definitely recommend practicing slowing down before you stop, and never use the brake while going above walking speed (3-4 mph). It would be safer for you to hop off in a running motion than apply the brake. In my area, you have the occasional train tracks or pothole you have to hop off and step over, then hop back on and keep going. You get used to all of this real quick, soon it becomes like reflex. The folding mechanism is nice, but I do feel like my handle is just slightly looser than I want it to be around the hinge. It's secure and everything, but every now and then you can feel it wiggle over a bump and it's unnerving for a second. I may fashion a small piece of foam or rubber to place in the hinge to secure the wiggle. Also every now and then something might cause the speed to jerk slightly, and it might scare you for a split second, but once you get used to these things you learn to "roll" with it (haha). The only real accessories I would add when buying this are a timer for your electric outlet, so you don't risk overcharging your battery, and a handlebar mirror if you plan on using this on the roads. A phone mount would also be great, but so far I've just kept mine in my pocket. With my bluetooth speaker, I don't need to worry about sound. The biggest suggestion I would make right out of the box, would be to install the mobile app and turn the cruise control OFF before you even step on it. It is on by default, and very dangerous if you're not used to it. I wiped out my first evening, because I didn't realize it was on. Other than that, so far I would say that I definitely recommend this e-scooter. Especially if you are a little bigger than average, or have no prior experience, this is a great model to start out on. This scooter is a rebuild of the Xiaomi 365 scooter, which was a highly popular model that got rebuilt by several companies, so extra parts and how-to videos are easy to find, which is another great reason to pick this one up. I’ve only had this product for 2 weeks. It was promising when I first got it. Compared to my other scooters the handlebar latch was different and more convenient to use. The upright lock for the handlebar was also easy to use as well. That’s all the positives however, the brakes are weak and take a second to stop comfortably. They also began squeaking very loudly within less than 10 uses. The cover over the back wheel where the handlebar lock is located broke off and is now dangling over the wheel which is incredibly unsafe. The material for the cover is cheaply made and cannot withstand the weight of the scooter when carrying it so it began to start breaking within days of usage. The sound for when the cruise control activates is inconsistent and is typically very quiet so it’s hard to know when cruise control actually activates as well. Along with the broken handlebar cover.m the screws for the upright handlebar lock were incredibly loose which leads some of the locking mechanisms loose and very inconvenient. I’ve had to adjust or retighten them almost before every use of the scooter to ensure the handlebar was tightly secured before riding. The battery and the charger were ok for me I don’t have many complaints on that. As stated, the scooter was promising because of the convenient looking features that it had. But with the unstable brake and the fact the wheel cover broke off within 10 uses of just using the function normally is deeply disappointing and just shows the lack of quality put into this scooter. I would not suggest this to anyone at all. I see why it is on sale now and I definitely encourage others to splurge into a better scooter ... show more

    • It exceeded my expectations

I bought this to take some of the fatigue of walking (I am required to cover over five miles per day at work) after an injury, and I have been pleasantly surprised by how well this has worked over the first week of use so far. First off, I believe that the claims of it being able to go 11 miles between charges look to be the most optimistic estimates possible, i.e. very light person on smooth cement traveling at constant rate of speed and with very little turning or other maneuvers. However, with that said, I'll provide a more representative value using myself, a large guy of 6'4" and 265 lbs, getting at at least five miles with varying slopes and surfaces, considerable maneuvering and turns with variation of speed, and frequent stops and starts before I get the power indicator to one bar and plug it back in for a full charge. That's a more realistic number, and I consider it acceptable. I'll run through some of the features for those of you who might want to know: 1) There is a blue LED digital speedometer. 2) The controller can toggle between three speed settings, with setting 1 topping out at just a bit over 5 mph, setting 2 topping out at just a bit over 10 mph, and setting 3 topping out (with me riding on smooth surface and fully accelerated) at 17.5 mph. 3) If the thumb throttle is held in at a constant rate of speed for five seconds or longer, the scooter will go into "cruise control" and you can take your thumb off the throttle until you want to stop or decelerate, with the cruise control switched off with either an application of the hand brake or by briefly activating the throttle once again. 4) Charging from fully depleted does indeed seem to go about 3.5 hours, so that seems to be accurate as per the product description, although my findings are that it takes more like 4.5-5 hours if the battery is completely depleted, so bear that in mind. 5) The folding mechanism is very good, but be aware that it is VERY stiff releasing the latch to fold it the first few times using it, so be sure that you either have very strong hands, or (especially women) be sure to have a strong wooden stick to act as a lever to release the release latch on the first few times using it until it breaks in and smooths out a bit, as it has done for me after about 24 fold/unfolds. 6) The tires are "honeycomb" rubber (for cushioning) instead of pneumatic, which makes flats or having to reinflate non-issues. 7) This particular scooter is heavy duty, rated to be usable for people up to 320 lbs, and I believe it. This is one stout ride. 8) The accelerator is nicely responsive without being overly sensitive to avoid jerky acceleration and deceleration, and the hand brake is decent, but it should be mentioned that brake application (goes only to the rear wheel) should be done judiciously to avoid getting thrown off the scooter, especially when moving at speeds beyond about 7 mph. 9) I would highly recommend not wrenching back or putting much weight on the handlebars to avoid wear and tear on the bar and latch and on the handlebars themselves, with the preferred way of driving it of having your hands just resting lightly on the handlebars and leaning back on the balls of the feet to carry most of your weight, as you would do while standing unaided on a flat surface off of the scooter. 10) Another recommendation would be to make time to coast down to a more manageable approximately 5 mph before GENTLY applying the brake, both to reduce wear on the brake pad and to avoid getting thrown off with overly aggressive brake use that is harder to not do while moving at higher speeds. I prefer to coast down to even lower speed -- about 2mph -- then step off gently, which makes dismounting much easier and starts a natural walking motion while doing it. I'm impressed with this scooter, but I wanted to mention that it's significantly (in my opinion) tougher to avoid wrecks on an electric scooter than on a bike, namely because the wheels are too small and too low to provide a gyroscopic effect that the much larger wheels of a bicycle provide. That's not a knock on this scooter specifically, but it's something to always keep in mind for all scooters of this type, especially if you've only ever ridden bicycles. The single most important precaution I can recommend for these scooters is to be very careful about the surface you are riding on and to studiously avoid even small rocks the size of grapes or bigger, never riding on gravel (obviously), and to be especially careful about even small cracks/holes on the surface you ride across. Riding a normal bicycle with wheels at least 20" - 26" diameter across rocks cracks and holes (within reason, of course) will usually only cause a bumpy ride, but attempting to ride across those with a scooter's 8" wheels can be catastrophic, and the rider will get badly hurt. Also, be aware that it's a very bad idea to attempt to do anything with your hands except steer and control the throttle and brake, as just taking one hand off suddenly makes it handle differently; so no, don't even THINK of touching your phone while riding. I occasionally have to do very minor things such as scratch my nose while riding, and I can say that it takes a much greater degree of caution to avoid over-steering and the inevitable outcome of that. I don't want to end my review making it sound as if this is an inherently dangerous way to travel, but it's of critical importance for riders to know. ... show more
