  • Nice Instrument and Practice Amp
Color: Sunburst
This is a nice musical instrument. I started out playing bass almost sixty years ago. I have since moved to mostly guitar, but I still loop some bass as part of backing tracks to solo over. My old bass is in need of repair, so I figured I'd pick up this inexpensive one. I'm very happy with it. First, it came packaged in a styrofoam clam shell over a poly bag. Then there was a box and an outer box. Very well done. The only problem is that I could not find the hex wrench to adjust the action. The hex wrench for the truss rod fell out of the box, when I first opened it. Don't know how that happened, but I suppose the two wrenches got loose and the smaller one is forever gone. No problem, it's a very common guitar size, so most people with a guitar will have one. The tuner is straight trash. This is probably my third copy of the exact same tuner and it simply doesn't work. Now to the positives. The fit and finish are really good. The poly tobacco sunburst is flawless. The neck is smooth and not too chunky. There was a tiny bit of relief in the neck, which is perfect. The frets are smooth and there are no high frets. Also, no sharp fret ends. The volume and tone knobs work smoothly. It tuned up well (with a strobe tuner) and seems to hold tune well after the strings are stretched. The tuning machines were fairly smooth with no looseness. Intonation was already set and the nut is cut very well, meaning the first fretted note was very close to where it should be on each string. If you're a beginner, you'll need to get that hex wrench to adjust the action because the action on mine was insanely high. You'll want to bring the E string down to about 2.4 mm and the G string to about 2 mm. I was actually able to bring the strings down a little lower than that and there was almost no fret buzz. Your mileage may vary, but remember to use a light touch and this instrument will work well for you. I don't really play slap bass, but I gave it a whirl and it seemed fine also. The practice amp is also perfectly fine. It has a mini-USB charging cable and it arrived already charged. I played around with the settings and you'll be able to hear your playing very well without chasing your family out of the house. The supplied cable is surprisingly robust, not the usual off brand cable that comes in beginner packages. The strap is fine to hold the bass, but if you are an athletic bassist, you'll want something a bit more secure. One final note, the bass weight in at 8.6 pounds, not overly heavy n the world of basses. Overall, this is a really nice bass starter kit. Just lower the action and find yourself a workable tuner and it will serve you well. ... show more

  • Fun kit to learn on
Color: Black
I've always wanted to learn bass guitar, and when I saw this, I really wanted to finally try. When this was delivered, the unboxing process was very messy because they packaged this in the old, cheap style of styrofoam. I mean it was everywhere and this was one of my biggest gripes with this product especially at this price. Invest in better packaging please as it sets the stage for the entire experience. This unboxing gave me the experience of this being a cheap toy rather than any instrument I was supposed to actually play. And, let's be honest, this is a bit of a toy, but that doesn't mean it is useless or is automatically going to be the worst experience. It just means that this is a beginner instrument that you don't invest much into and you can try learning before you go out and buy a really good bass. This is what made the packaging so disappointing. Like I knew this wasn't a professional instrument, but at least try to give me the impression that it is more than a toy. Another issue I had was the quality of the pick guard on the guitar. It was cheap acrylic and the plastic you pull off was the plastic that normally protects cheap acrylic. The material being cheap wasn't my real issue, however. The issue was that there were two layers of the protective plastic on this guard which seems to me like a mistake and added to the "toy" experience. They also had this plastic run underneath some very tight potentiometer nuts for the knobs which made it very annoying to get all of the plastic of the guard. The guard was also held on pretty sloppily with wrong size screws that stuck out a bit and were a bit cattywampus. So to sum up that initial experience, instead of receiving a "cheap bass guitar" I felt more like I received a "cheap toy" due to the inattentiveness of the packaging and pick guard manufacturing. When I actually started learning to play though, I really enjoyed the experience. This has everything you need to start and I didn't have to stress about anything else other than "how do I actually play this thing". You get a good quality sling, a decent tuner, a decent mini amp that has quite a bit of volume for a beginner. I never once thought "oh man I have to get this thing so I can have the full experience." It was all there and this made the actual process of learning super enjoyable. All the issues I had with the packaging and quality of the pick guard really doesn't interfere with the actual use of this guitar so I'm not going to ding it too hard, but it should definitely be improved. I suck, but I never felt like it was this guitar's fault so definitely try this kit if you're looking to learn! ... show more

  • Good quality for affordable bass
Color: Black
The electric bass kit from Strich is a good beginner bass player or for a regular player to practice with or to record songs. The accessories included all seem good quality: the cleaning cloth, tuner, guitar strap, and chord. My first time ever tuning a bass the low E string was a bit tricky; I couldn't tell if I was too high or too low, so I just checked an audio file from an online video site and got the E right – this matched perfectly with the included tuner After that the rest of the strings fell right into place. The Strich amplifier included had me laughing. I was waiting for another delivery when I saw the box, I was sure a 20 watt amp wouldn't fit. It did! This thing is so small I didn't think it would even be suitable for practice, but it is. I would even feel comfortable playing along with some acoustic guitar playing friends with plenty of power from the amp to be heard just fine. The Strich bass itself is nice. I was surprised by the full size, it feels so big. The action is typical for a beginner bass – the frets are far apart and will be quite the wrist/hand workout to get used to the pressure needeed. The only problem I have noticed is a slight buzz when firmly striking the open E. It bugged me at first but after playing it a while the slight buzz grew on me. I'm guessing some graphite in the nut above the fret board would quiet it down, but like I said, it grew on me. Great for beginners and great for starting to record at home. ... show more
