Description

This yarn ball winder (Model YBW-A) makes center pull yarn balls with a capacity of about 4 ounces. The clamp-on base allows it to be firmly fixed at the edges of tables, chairs, benches, or any other convenient locations. The maximum thickness of table that this can clamp on to is about 1 3/4\\". It is best to be used with a swift yarn winder (Umbrella or Amish style, both available under Stanwood Needlecraft brand names). But you can easily replace a swift with other devices or just simply your arms. The craftsmanship on these ball winders is superior. In comparison to our model YBW-B, this winder is smoother and makes less noise while winding.

  • Convenient for the price
This yarn winder definitely works, but it would work better with the bobbin that you have to purchase separately. I'm cheap so I only have the winder - it clamps nicely onto my coffee table and winds my yarn up nicely, but it would be an easier process if I had the bobbin or something else to hold the yarn and keep it from tangling as I wind it. ... show more

  • Gramma would of used this and been happy.
use this and team it with the yarn fan . The job is easy as pie.. the only downside is the ball of yarn could be a bit larger to hold all I have in one ball. The size is limited by the size of the tool. But it works like a dream.

  • Decent mid range product
There are cheaper ones and ones that are much more expensive. Good product for the price. Makes the job easy as long as you don't get going too fast - the yarn can end up underneath in the joint sometimes. Have to clamp down hard to use on the table I have in my den.

  • Makes fabulous skeins of yarn from scraps and balls
I did not think I was going to use this ball winder because I never buy hanks of yarn (I only buy skeins and balls). But I did have MANY balls of yarn from leftover yarn so I gave it a try. And wow, I LOVE the skeins it makes! The lead end of the yarn comes out of the top beautifully and the skeins sit neatly without rolling around. I've since "re-skeined" about 60 balls of yarn and will never roll up a ball of yarn again. It sets up quickly and is super easy to use. It generally takes a minute or less to make a skein depending on how much yarn you have. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a bunch of balls of yarn rolling around and wants to make them neater and easier to use. ... show more

  • A bit flimsy…
I didn’t go all-in on a professional set up for my first try at winding yarn. Nothing in the write-up indicated I’d need anything besides the winder (and a table to clamp it on). The clamp itself rotates & pops free more often than I expected it would, and the instructions state I need to use a spindle or someone else’s hands to keep the yarn from getting tangled. I wouldn’t have gotten it if I’d known I’d need more equipment or another person to help! It’s adequate for smaller balls of yarn but I have to hand-wind the ends of standard skeins. It’s a bit tricky but easier than just balling things up. ... show more

  • Easy, fast, and ridiculously fun.
I love this winder. It makes two cakes out of one 330 yd skein. They stack nicely and pull smoothly from the center. As you use the yarn and the cake wants to start collapsing, I've found that putting the toe half of a knee-high nylon around it (from the bottom) keeps it together and makes it easy to transport. ... show more

  • Gets the job done
I don't know why but I am rarely able to find the yarn end that's inside of the skein. I think I've succeeded twice in years of crocheting and have ended up with a big tangled mess as a result of trying to find that end and so I no longer even attempt it. Annoyingly every project is fed from a flopping skein as this is what happens when starting with the outside loose end. I decided to buy this winder so that I could enjoy a center pull experience while crocheting. My first use didn't go too well. I set up at my kitchen counter, winder clamped in place and a large mixing bowl to contain the skein. I failed at threading the yarn through the guide, I thought I needed to tape the beginning yarn to something to make it easy to locate after the cake was done, and I went too fast near the end and the remaining yarn in the bowl got very tangled. Next try went much better. I threaded the end of the yarn right through the hole of the guide, just as if I were threading a needle (still can't figure out any other way), did not try to tape the yarn to anything, and as I neared the end of the skein I went slowly and made no tangled mess. So I'm happy. For me, not being able to pull the yarn from the center of the skein, it's not the smooth operation that all the YouTube videos show. But it gets the job done and is a thousand times better than hand winding into balls. ... show more

  • Happy with this winder
I was really hesitant to buy this winder because my previous winder was plastic and it never felt very sturdy. From the moment I took this winder out of the box I could tell it was made much better. The winding has been smooth and I look forward to using it for many more years!
