  • Perfect for traveling. Get extra batteries, you'll need them.
I took this on a month long overseas trip. And I've used it around my workshop to make videos. GOOD: The flip up display for use from in front of the camera is great. The video quality is good, and so is the picture quality PROVIDED there's enough light. There are a zillion options to tweak the shots, I'm sure I've only scraped the surface with them. The zoom is pretty amazing and the auto-stabilization works really well. The thing is really tiny and convenient to move around. NOT SO GOOD: The low-light capabilities are pretty atrocious to be honest, and this is widely reported in other reviews and I knew this before I bought it. There's occasions when it struggles to focus even in good light but that's autofocus for you. It does go through batteries, on average I used 3 a day when traveling, just taking happy snaps of things I saw. TERRIBLE : The wireless/phone interface transfer stuff is truly 18th century and Sony should be embarrassed by it. Without any doubt the only real way to transfer stuff from the camera is to yank out the memory card and plug it into a laptop. I'm glad I bought a huge memory card because if I'd had to manage "remaining shots" on my trip by transferring to my phone it would have been a nightmare. SUMMARY: This is a highly functional, portable camera with good imaging quality and amazing zoom capabilities. Just don't expect to use it at night, without doubt your phone will do a better job. ... show more

  • Fantastic camera
I bought this as an upgrade for my son who gad a previous Sony superzoom that fell into the ocean. It was backordered a long time but worth the weight. Despite a small sensor, the images are great. Even when zoomed in there is virtually no barrel or ouncyshion and the images are incredibly sharp

  • Great Travel Camera
This camera is a great travel camera because it is so lightweight. The pictures are good quality and the zoom is great, although it is a bit hard to hold steady at the long zoom, while trying to focus. I think that this is because it is so small and therefore, doesn't have a large grip. At the longest zoom, the pictures can be a bit grainy,if you don't have it focused exactly. Even then, you lose a bit of detail. As others have said, my iphone takes better pictures in low light. It has a wrist stap, but you really need to add something to the strap to tighten it a bit, or it can slip off your wrist, if your wrists are small. Because it can be a bit difficult to hold onto, I would definitely suggest buying the insurance plan. I recently, tripped on vacation and dropped mine. It was only a few months old. The insurance plan was easy to use and fixed it for free and it is working fine. I would have been sick, if I didn't have the insurance, since it was new. ... show more

  • Great, tiny point and shoot travel camera.
What makes a great travel camera? Small size. Good picture quality. Flexible range. Good auto mode. Some manual controls. The Sony HX99 has all these features. Its hard to beat a tiny point and shoot that can fit in your pocket and can take everything from modestly wide landscapes to long telephoto shots. About the only strike against it might be the price. If you want a "take everywhere and do everything" camera that can out do your phone camera, I would recommend taking a good look at the HX99. ... show more

  • Ok but pic quality was just as good or better on my 7-year old camera; not worth the $
My 7-year old Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V is starting to get old (collecting dust inside, which I can get cleaned out, but also starting to make weird grinding noises when it focuses), so I thought I'd look for a new camera. I like my camera, so I thought I'd try an update. On paper, it has everything I want - good zoom in a light camera with decent battery life. But the picture quality wasn't as good, at least the way I use it as a point-and-shoot; it was softer, with more noise, and the colors were a bit off. The pix I uploaded are probably the most drastic example. I took them through a window at high zoom. The one with higher saturation is closer to the true color, and came from my old camera..... ... show more

  • compact with pro features
I was attracted to the long zoom, which as proven to be satisfactory. It takes a little practice to use some of the best features, such as a viewfinder (pops up, then small inner portion pulls out toward you), fine-tuning ring for focus, and the panorama setting. I was impressed by the bracketed shots used for getting good results under low light or long zoom. The 3-second timer is great on the self-portrait view with the monitor flipped up. The moving parts feel a little fragile (viewfinder, flash, zoom lever) so I will handle with care. ... show more

  • A Great Camera
I purchased this just before taking a trip to Maine and Canada and was absolutely thrilled with the results. It’s quick, has an amazing zoom, and takes great pictures. It’s replaced a year old, large RX10V IV Sony camera and an older Sony NXR and I’m convinced delivers equally good photos. The two things I’m not thrilled with is the interface with Apple products....just not intuitive; and the second is that it doesn’t appear to have the same ability to download Sony software to enhance the photography options and experience. Otherwise, a great...really great travel camera. ... show more
