  • Easy set up and great picture
I purchased this as as replacement for my old Sony Blu-Ray DVD player that, after 7 years and a refurbishment under warranty by Sony, was giving signs that it was about to give up the ghost. Since I had had such great luck with my original Sony Blu-Ray DVD player and was used to its features, I opted for this updated version and I am absolutely thrilled. I received this just 4 days before the original unit gave up so I was able to swap them out in literally 5 minutes. The remote came with batteries, I had the HDMI cable and charger and was able to swap it out without a single issue and it plays beautifully. Clear, crisp picture, easy to use remote and I'm ready for movie marathons this winter when the snows come in. I'm quite pleased with this unit and will likely order another if the player in the living room begins to show signs of wear and tear, because these units are easy to set up and, when I needed to use my warranty with Sony, they were very helpful and took care of the problem for me. Win, win, win!! ... show more

  • Solid, basic machine
Good compact machine, very easy setup, simple and quick connection to my home wifi, quick loading of BD discs and DVDs. A good, basic machine, low cost, and seems "solid" in every way. The remote is simple (uncomplicated) and very serviceable; it's small, but no bigger than it needs to be, which is very good. If the unit has any down side, I'd say that the services it comes supplied with in the online area are mostly not useful to me, most seem expired or don't deliver anything. There's not yet a firmware update (as of March 23, 2023) available for the machine, and maybe an update will contain new and more useful icons to click on which will be up to date and operable, we'll see. I like this machine!, and it supplements another Sony BD player of mine which has been made "region-free" for BDs and DVDs, but which has no wifi capability. The two players now use up both HDMI inputs into my LG TV. Another great provision of this player is that it comes along with an HDMI cable in the package. I think it is a bargain at the price. EDIT [added March 26, 2023]: I find that the user manual is unclear or incorrect about ADDING apps to the "[My Apps]" area of the Home Screen. Here is what works for me: To ADD apps to the [My Apps] area, first click the large "+" (plus) sign in the [My Apps] area. A new screen of apps, "[All Apps]", will appear. In that new screen of [All Apps] icons (tiles), click on one that you want to add to [My Apps]. The selected app will then appear in [My Apps]. To add more apps from [All Apps] to [My Apps], repeat this. I have not yet tried REMOVING apps from [My Apps], but I'll take a look at that soon. -- J.L.M. EDIT [added March 29, 2023] To REMOVE an app from [My Apps], click "Options" and use the Remove selection. ... show more

  • A good budget choice
I wanted a good basic option for DVDs and Blu-rays, and this is it. Easy to set up, good menu system, settings and on-screen controls, fairly responsive. Solid remote control that does work with a Samsung TV once you set it up. This player and its remote just works, which is what I wanted, at a good price. Note that I'm using this entirely offline, without streaming services. It's probably not a good choice for streaming services, since the model is several years old and has limited streaming service support. Just skip the network setup and ignore the Netflix button on the remote, and you're good to go. Streaming services don't even show up on the home screen if you haven't been online. I chose this as a replacement for the Panasonic BD90. They have the same price range and feature set, aside from the Panasonic not having online features. But the Panasonic has annoying, very dated-looking on-screen controls and menu system, and a poorly designed remote control that lacks important buttons like TV controls and disc menu. The Sony is nothing special, but much better than the Panasonic in that regard. I'm happy with the choice. Note that I bought this Used - Like New, which wasn't quite accurate. The player was a bit dirty, and hadn't been factory reset. But everything was in the box, and worked well, and wasn't damaged, and it's not Sony's fault of course. ... show more

  • Small footprint. Works great as Blu Ray. Can't comment on Apps.
I have a smart TV, so I didn't need a device to stream. We moved the XBox up to my son's room, and just needed something to play physical disks. This seems to be great. I was surprised by how small it is. About the size of a cigar box. Works with the remote control from my Samsung TV, without any programming. I did put an old DVD of The Big Lebowski in to see how the up-sampling works, and the video quality is passable but not awesome. It's hard to remember how incredible DVDs looked on an old-school SD TV. Not so much on a 4K TV. I'm spoiled in that way. The sound is still great with my Samsung sound bar. The Goodfellas Blu ray looks perfect. Happy with this. No complaints. And a Sony at the same price as a no-name Walmart special can't be scoffed at. Would buy again. ... show more
