2nd update: I to the new one from 220-electronics, and it not only contained clear instructions but worked perfectly the first time. It seems that this unit is not normally region free, but 220-electronics does some sort of mod to make it so. When I got the one from merchforu, though it was ordered from this same page and so was listed as region-free, it did not have the modification. So I would say it's worth buying, and I have upgraded my rating, but beware that your results depend entirely on buying from the more reputable vendor. ___________ Update: I'm now feeling a little bad about putting this review on this page, because the current seller listed is not the same seller I bought mine from, and the seller seems to make all the difference. Currently it's listed as being sold by 220-electronics, which has great reviews and who were very helpful when I first called them, before we realized I'd actually bought from someone else and they couldn't help me. When I bought this it was being sold by merchforu. I returned the merchforu version, and then turned around and ordered the same unit from 220-electronics. It should arrive shortly, and I will update my review to reflect the one they send me. _________ The entire reason I bought this was because it was advertised as region-free. First of all, it did not include the page of region-free instructions advertised (nor the hdmi cable for that matter, but I had another one). Undaunted, I followed every instruction I could find online, first, and then called the number on the side of the box. Nothing the customer service rep suggested worked either, so they finally consulted with a supervisor... who said that the region can not be changed. I'll go ahead and return it, I guess, and look for another one, but I'm utterly frustrated and have wasted way too much time. ... show more

    • Be prepared for possible frustration, updated review
A lot of people are having good experiences with these multi-region players. Perhaps I was just unlucky. I bought a LG 175 region free player about 3 years ago and it has worked flawlessly for DVDs of many regions. I assumed Blu-Ray use would be similarly successful. I needed a second player so I doubled down. Tuns out that Blu-rays are a bit cumbersome, you have to reset the unit every time you want to change regions. In a household with multiple people putting discs in, this is awkward. I followed the simple instructions to reset the new unit. The player responds to the procedure (shuts off when a reset code is entered.) But then it still rejects region B blu-rays when it powers back up. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this problem. My older LG-175 doesn't respond to the reset procedure at all. This tells me that the modifications that Dynastar makes have evolved. Also mildly annoying: I removed the sticker that Dynastar placed on the back of my unit to mark it as modified for multi-region enabled. It reveals that my brand new player was actually manufactured 5 years ago. Maybe not signficant, perhaps this model has been stable for a long time. But I note that I bought a non-modified LG-175 6 months ago and it was truly brand new. If I could talk to Dynastar directly I expect there may be some tricks to getting both of these units working with Blu-Ray. Perhaps one or both are rare lemons that can be exchanged. The problem is there is no technical support (other than chatting with an Amazon generalist.) If Dynastar were to see this review and reach out to me that would be great. More likely I will return the unit that is still eligible and try my luck with a Sony. Updated review: I did get the newest LG to switch Blu-ray regions. More on that later. After playing with the new replacement Sony BDP-BX370 I quickly discovered that it greatly superior to the LG in usability. The remote control for the LG is miserable in a dozen different ways. No quick access buttons for subtitles or audio. When you hit "display" to see your status in the movie it quickly shuts off display mode on its own. I used the LG interface for three years and am familiar with all its shortcomings. The Sony is a breath of fresh air. The Sony has added modest advantage of internet connection - the apps are unneeded by 95% of ppl who are already streaming. But it is good to be able to update the firmware easily. So I've returned recent LG units and sent two older ones to goodwill. Switching blu-ray regions is very similar and a little fussy with both LG and Sony. The instructions miss some subtlety. You want to have no disc in the unit when you power on. On the Sony you have to make sure that the apps are showing before you hit the button to select region. Keep trying, give the machine time to stabilize at each stage, you'll figure it out if it is not working for you at first. ... show more

I have owned this for a little more than a week. I purchased it to replace what, at the time I bought it, was the best Blu-Ray (and region free) player you could buy---the Oppo BDP-83, which after 13 years failed. If Oppo still made disc players I would have purchased one, regardless of price. Unfortunately Oppo does not, being content (apparently) to make phones, because it would appear that players of physical media are no longer in sufficient demand. Be that as it may, after doing a bit of research I purchase this LG (modified) player, and so far I am very impressed. I was, initially, somewhat suspect but am so no more. If you still play phytsical media, and especially if you have media coded for other regions than North America, I highly recommend this player. It could fail next week, of course (as could anything else), but so far I am pleased with my purchase. ... show more

    • Decent player for the money.
Works well. We bought it because it is a Region Free player. Which works well. Not a huge variety of APPS to choose from if you want to view TuBee for instance. YouTube runs slow on this player, compared to the previous Sony we had. All CD types play perfectly on this. So thats a bonus. A good player for low cost. ... show more
