  • Upgrade from ConBee II
Would I upgrade to this if I had to do it again -Yes. My previous install a ConBee II running on HA Blue (and before that an old NUC). Now why did I choose to upgrade? Well, I didn’t originally plan to - the ConBee II was working well (had nothing to compare too). Then not long ago during a routine update to HA something just broke. My regular backups didn’t help and the ConBee II decided to just refuse to communicate. So I ordered the Sonoff as a replacement. But by the time it arrived I had managed to get the ConBee II working. I was going to send this back. But, I had to open the box didn’t I?! The Sonoff is in a aluminum case and feels so nice, and the external antenna had me wondering :) so of course I had to try it out. I went in to HA and removed the 20+ devices I had connected through the ConBee II. Yeah - I was committed:) I used ZHA instead of zigbee2mqtt - why - because it was just quicker to test. So one connected (obviously ZHA just picked it up instantly). I thought let’s see how well this picks up my six halo zigbee recessed lighting. Damn. It detected them a lot faster than the ConBee II. I was a little shocked. I then went on to create a group to see how well it’d control the lights - and damn again. The thing was way more smooth and responsive than the previous setup. Note: I installed this is the same spot I had the ConBee II. I’m not saying the ConBee II sucked. Not at all, it did it’s job and I would have been as happy as I was. But after using the Sonoff - definitely glad to have upgraded. Plus it was an excuse to muck around with nerdy stuff for an afternoon. Some other things - yes I had to add all my zigbee devices again - but that really isn’t as big of a pain if you do it in stages. Secondly a lot of my automations are in Node Red and use IEEE which doesn’t change so a majority of those still worked. Overall - I wasn’t planning to upgrade, but happy I did. Now I just have to explain to the wife why it was a good idea - and that might not be as easy :) ... show more

  • Plugged into a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant, Works great
If I have more than 25 devices on my home network, wifi things start dropping off the network randomly. I switched my smart lighting over to the Zigbee protocol, and I basically built a sub-network for smart appliances that took the strain off the wifi network. Zigbee is resilient, it uses a mesh protocol, longer reach through more walls, and perfect for low-bandwidth devices. My only complaint is that Zigbee devices themselves tend to be more expensive than their wifi counterparts. Home Assistant automatically recognized it, and added all my zigbee devices. ... show more

  • Works flawlessly with Home Assistant on an ancient Intel NUC
I was used the Nortek HUSBZB-1 Z-Wave + Zigbee stick and after a long period of stability Home Assistant was unresponsive at startup. I traced it to the ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) integration and ultimately to the root cause which was the HUSBZB-1. I still use it for Z-Wave but the Sonoff has been rock solid and stable for Zigbee. ... show more

  • It works as advertised
From my research on a few different forums and reading reviews I trust, this was the best Zigbee gateway for Home Assistant. It works. I have no issues to report.

  • Works?
Works as expected. Should make it easier to swap wifi channels especially since the 2.4Ghz band doesn't have many center frequencies to choose from. Could easily interfere with wifi devices.

  • So far a solid choice
I immediately used this product with Zigbee2MQTT so all of my opinions are for this setup. I followed the instruction for this adapter on the Zigbee2MQTT website (and may have found a YouTube to give me some more confidence) before proceeding to flash the firmware. The written instructions were a little...rough (I love downloading random .docx files, but YOLO and Linux). If followed, they work and getting the stick to work with Zigbee2MQTT (Home Assistant add-on) was also fairly painless. Make sure you understand the network options in Zigbee2MQTT before setting everything up. It's a good idea to personalize your network key and much easier to do before you start including a bunch of devices. I have about 8 smart plugs and a couple of Philips Hue lamps as a mesh and 12 end devices on my network. So far I mostly use my Zigbee network for motion/temperature/lux sensors (since the Hue ones are amazing), door locks, and a couple of cheapo thermostats that work pretty well. The plugs are mostly for the mesh (I think I have a HomePod plugged into one for some reason) and some lamps in an inflexible room. This stick with Zigbee2MQTT has been a solid combination. Not every device has worked perfectly every time, but every device I've bought has worked at least as well as it states in the official Zigbee2MQTT device list. Read the device information carefully before you purchase anything, there may be caveats. My toddler can inundate the network with RGB changes through my phone and I rarely see any lag. I plan to keep adding Philips Hue devices to this network since they have been so solid. I prefer not having to rely on their bridge (3rd party controlled dependency) and this setup got me into the Hue devices fairly painlessly using open source software that I can actually decipher. ... show more

  • Would not pair any devices - fixed
EDIT: solved pairing problem by using a USB extension cable to get the Dongle's antenna 3 feet away from my WiFi router and other WiFi devices. Now it works fine, pairing with all my Zigbee devices. I know Zigbee uses the same 2.4 GHz spectrum as WiFi but I didn't expect it to be so sensitive to interference. Thank you to Smart Home Junkie for solving the problem. Original Review: I tried to pair all kinds of different devices with this controller and nothing would appear. So I found that you could flash updated firmware that fixes pairing issues and tried that but the flashing software could not find the device on any of my USB ports and kept crashing. So that's it, after 2 days of trying to get this to work, I am returning it for a refund. ... show more
