Of course the solar does not charge nearly as fast, but it does work. It even has a flashlight (with strobe ability) and a compass built into the back. It comes with a little carbine hook too. I frequently utilize this device on my plate carrier for hiking and camping purposes. It retains its charge for a significant amount of time and charges relatively quickly when connected. However, the solar charging feature requires a substantial amount of time. While leaving it exposed to sunlight all day will charge it, you need to ensure it remains under sunlight consistently throughout the day. It has withstood a few drops on rocks without any damage. I own two of these devices. One is affixed to the back of my plate carrier underneath a camelbak, with a cable running through the shoulder strap, while the other is secured to the top of my hiking backpack using zip ties. ... show more

This power bank is about the same size as a large smartphone, and has a single set of USB jacks in the three major flavors (USB A, USB mini, and USB C). The single button controls a set of LED white lights, through 3 modes. The steady light is, of course, helpful; the “tactical” strobe flash not so much, and the “SOS” Morse code flash is mis-programmed to flash “dot-dot-dot dash-dash-DOT dot-dot-dot”. A 42,800 mAh battery is MASSIVE, about 10 times the capacity of typical comparable devices. The power bank is heavy. It also takes a long time to charge—about 5 hours on a dedicated charger from a 50% charge as received from the manufacturer. I charged an iPad from 0% and it similarly took about 5 hours to charge. The manufacturer notes that solar charging will take a long time, and I noticed no discernible increase in the charge level after a day in the sun. There is one other consideration: the manufacturer quite responsibly states that the upper ambient temperature limit for this device is 113°F, and warns that it should not be left in the sun to charge. This seems to limit the device’s stated purpose: to gather solar energy when it is most available. Radiant solar energy will easily raise its operating temperature beyond that limit, and in my testing I verified that only direct solar exposure will initiate charging. I believe the device is well built, and as long as you don’t count on it for daily use away from the grid it should do its job. ... show more

The product works great if you charge by plugging into the wall however, the reason i purchased it was the solar charging feature so that I could have it in case of an emergency.
