  • Night Vision Upgrade!
Color: White
The media could not be loaded. Night Vision Upgrade! I just finished installing the SiOnyx Nightwave camera. I mounted it to the T Top and connected it to one of my Garmins. I just tested it in the driveway, although it wasn’t pitch black. I’m excited to see how it performs on the water early mornings and at night. I was really impressed with the brightness. I liked the price compared to other night vision options. ... show more

  • Works great, but not for full speed navigation.
Color: Gray
The low light tech is amazing, but markers and buoys are barely noticeable at 30 knots. You can see them, but they are hard to differentiate from the water reflections because the image gets pixelated in low light conditions. You can see them as you get closer, but by then you have to perform an emergency turn. Infrared is superior because anything that is even a few degrees different than the water sticks out like a sore thumb. With a 12" screen, I have to slow down to 15 knots (or turn on a spot light) to navigate safely. Other boats with any kind of light on them really stand out though. This is not a radar replacement but it definitely is a great add-on to one. ... show more

  • I don’t think it works in the fog or snow Without infrared
Color: Gray
It is not comparable to an infrared camera for fog or snow. It will probably be pretty good otherwise!

  • Astounding Technology for Nighttime Boating
Color: White
I don't own the most expensive boat in the world, but it costs more than any of my cars ever have. So it's an investment that I'd like to take care of and get the most use out of at the same time. I have gone boating for years in bays, lakes, and rivers up and down the east coast. The one thing that I'm always very leery of doing is boating at nighttime. It's absolutely pitch black for the most part. You have to rely on your maps to avoid obstructions or the shoreline. On top of that you have to avoid other boats that are either anchored or running about themselves. All boats are supposed are supposed to have bright navigational lights that are easy to see, but this isn't often the case. A lot of boaters also don't pay attention to other boats when they're on the move. As a result of all of this, I've always been of the mind that I'll just stick to the water during daylight hours. This new SiOnyx Nightwave Camera comes in and helps to change that whole situation. The night vision on this camera is nothing short of amazing. It practically turns the night into day and allows you to see almost everything ahead of you. The installation process was fairly easy for me, but I've also done several upgrades on my boat in the past. However, it should be a pretty basic process for most beginners too. The camera has a small profile size and doesn't stick out as an expensive piece of marine equipment on your boat. If anything it simply looks like your everyday security camera. I am able to connect my phone, tablet, and Garmin (in my case). It provides a nice, clear, and stable image for you to navigated without any lag. Over the past few weeks we've been taking out the boat for some nighttime fishing just to get the hang of it during the boating offseason. It's performed flawlessly and I'm more than pleased with this camera. The biggest issue for most people is going to be the price point. That's something that's going to be a personal choice where you have to weight the pros against the cons. You spent 10s to 100s of thousands of dollars on a boat, so why restrict yourself to using it only half the time during the day? Now you can upgrade and boat in relative safety at night as well. ... show more

  • Downright amazing technology
Color: White
I guess this camera might be 'overkill' for using on my local lake but it's an amazing use of technology. I'm a camera geek and I thought I'd seen impressive low light performance before but this is just another level. As long as you've got even a tiny bit of starlight you'll be able to see as close to 'clear as day' as is possible. The 'heavy lifting' is done by the company's patented 'Black Silicon' CMOS sensor. The form factor is pretty basic--I think it looks like one of the security cameras I have at my house. It has a similar weatherproof rating (IP67) and the product description says it is submersible to 3 feet. I decided to take their word for it instead of tossing it in the shallow end of my pool to try it out. It has a 44 degree FOV which isn't that big but it covers what you need to see immediately in front of your boat. As a camera geek, I was glad to see the 1/4" threaded hole in the bottom. That's a fairly standard size for tripods and camera mounts and when I get some time I'll see if I can figure out some cool 'non boating' things to do with it. The camera is a manual focus but in my experience the focus seldom needs to be changed. Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think I've even changed the focus. As for the night vision capability, it's mind boggling. If you're thinking of getting one I suggest you heading over to YouTube and watching some videos of the device in action. I can't really do it justice with words alone. For a long time, the state of the art was thermal imaging which creates an outline with heat patterns. Like I said before, this is on another level from that. There are a few disappointments. The device has an analog output to interface with a color display and a wi-fi connection. I used it with several devices via the wi-fi connection and it worked fine with the accompanying smartphone app. The camera can be powered with 12V DC or USB (5V DC) and the functionality is different with each. With the 12V DC, you can use the wi-fi and analog options but not the USB video out. With the USB power, you can use the wi-fi and USB-out but not the analog. The wi-fi needs to have 5 GHz connectivity which is quickly becoming standard on any wireless connected device. I've talked to others that have had trouble with the wi-fi connectivity and the 2.4 GHz band limitation probably explains that. I didn't have any trouble with it FWIW. The Nightwave app can't record video or livestream to the Internet. The 2.4 GHz makes that pointless anyway, but it really needs HDMI or RTSP output (along with faster wifi connectivity). That seems to be a huge oversight as nothing 'sells' this product better than seeing it in action. There are screen recorders for iOS and Android devices and you can record that way but a native recording function is really needed. These caveats notwithstanding, the quality of the night vision imaging is well worth the price of admission. The technology that facilitates this is incredible and hopefully the next iteration will improve on the points I made above. All in all, an amazing camera. Highly recommended! ... show more
