Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Compound microscopes use a compound optical system with an objective lens and an eyepiece. Stereo microscopes show object depth in a three-dimensional image. Digital microscopes are used to display an image on a monitor, rather than looking through a lens. Microscopes can have monocular (one), binocular (two), or trinocular (three) eyepieces, with varying magnification abilities. Magnification ability refers to the size of an image. Resolution, also known as resolvant power, refers to the clarity of the image. The interaction between field of view (FOV), numerical aperture (NA), and working distance (WD) determines resolution. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities. Microscopes are widely used in education, lab research, biology, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, and in the medical, forensic science, and veterinary industries.United Scope manufactures microscopy equipment and accessories under the brand name AmScope. • Much better image than i expected.
Pattern Name: Microscope Kit Style: A) White Microscope Kit
Works well. Much better then expected after reading the reviews. I think this is a good value and certainly has potential for use with children. This is not a perfect instrument or laboratory quality, but I was easily able to look at some prepared slides i bought as well as the slides that came with it. Key issue is to adjust the light, the amount of light, and to start at the lowest magnification. Do not try to use the high magnification first. Always start low, find the specimen and then increase with care. Understandably if you are not used to operating a microscope their will be a learning curve. I was with some care able to view with little problem up to 1200x magnification. At that power there is some issue adjusting the focus, light, and specimen. At low power 300x, it is much more forgiving but still you have to make adjustments carefully and slowly. It isn't frustrating to use. The rest of the kit is of reasonable quality. The case is very nice and fits all the components well and can be used to store the scope, etc for years of use. It also comes with a instruction manual that has some useful information regarding possible experiments and observations. Simple stuff that a kid can do. Some people have commented that the light is a problem. It is a bit fragile but turning it off is easy. Just rotate it to the mirror side and the light goes out saving the batteries. No problem there. I am very happy we got this for my 6 yr old and he is very happy too. ... show more

  • Great at what it's designed for
Pattern Name: Microscope Kit Style: A) White Microscope Kit
Great beginner microscope. I suspect that the majority of the low reviews for this microscope are from people that either have little microscope experience or were expecting it to do things it was never designed to do. I have a degree in biology (although I'm not employed in a biological field), so I have plenty of experience using lab quality microscopes. This microscope produces a reasonable level of clarity and magnification. Children will be able to see individual cells, and even nuclei. Yes, it can be a little bit hard to focus at times since there is no fine adjustment, only coarse, and yes, your field of view does move a bit while adjusting it. But again, this is a $40 microscope made for kids. This is more than good enough to introduce your child (or even adults) to the world of microscopy. The kit is great, and will give the user plenty of things to do with the microscope. A few prepared slides, and tools to make some simple slides of your own are included, along with the brine shrimp kit. I was pleasantly surprised by what this microscope can do, and can't wait to give it to my daughter for the holidays (I took it out of the box and tested it first due to some of the bad reviews on here). If you are inexperienced with microscopes, here are a few tips: make sure that what you are trying to view is in the center of the aperture (where the light comes through), and always start on the lowest magnification. ... show more

  • Cheaply made
Pattern Name: Microscope Kit Style: A) White Microscope Kit
For a first timer microscope, this would be fine. The light and mirror are pretty cheap and there's not even an on and off switch. It just turns off when you twist if and turns back on when you twist it back the other way. The whole microscope is of plastic but it does come with a few basic slides of plant cells, as well as brine shrimp eggs which we didn't have any luck of them hatching. It did fuel my son's curiosity for the world around him though and he proceeded to go outside and bring in little bits of all types of random things so he could slice them down and put them on a slide. The kit also comes with dye and a tiny petri dish for the brine shrimp, as well as a very dull, cheaply made scalpel to slice objects. It doesn't work very well at all but it looks cool. For young kids I'd say this would be a lot of fun and seem real to them. For older kids, maybe not so much. I personally wouldn't buy this for anyone over the age of 9. ... show more
