There is a timer for 5,10 or 15 mins. My kids play travel hockey and we take a lot of long drives and this has worked great. We pass it around the car! This is a very intense shiatsu massage. IT actually produced a bruise on my back. If it isn't running, it is uncomfortable to just sit on, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a chair massager. I returned the item
