  • Surprisingly functional and fun to play!
Color: Black
First off, I am not a trumpet player by trade or training. I've played a lot of different brass instruments but my forte was always in trombone, baritone, tuba, etc. So, the higher pitch brass instruments with the smaller mouth pieces are a bit of a challenge for me to get consistent tone and play particularly well. That being said, this little plastic trumpet plays fairly well for me. I am only using the plastic mouth piece that came with the horn (came with 2, by they way), but it seems pretty functional. Upon first attempts to play, I noted a significant amount of "airiness" in the sound coming out of the horn. Playing louder and with more breath support does limit this effect, but it is still present. It could be a leak in the tubing or pistons / valves, but it is unclear as of yet if it is the horn or just me. The main tuning slide was pretty stiff when I first started playing and I was afraid I would break something forcing it to move. Once it moved, it has been moving easily since. I'm hoping that I didn't cause a leak here. I will add some slide grease / cream (does that work on plastic?) and see if that keeps the slide movable while limiting any potential air leaks. The first and third valve slides moved with no issue, and the second valve slide can be removed easily and replaced. I think a little practice with this horn should help improve the sound as this is a challenge for my embrasure. I'll also (at some point) remove the valves for inspection. Oh, this came with a couple spare valves also - kinda crazy. All in all, pretty neat horn. Very light weight, playable, and is going to be fun to have in my studio room. ... show more

  • Surprisingly impressive for price point and being made of plastic!!!!
Color: Black
This trumpet (got the B flat version) came packaged in a nicely printed full color box. Upon opening the box, there was a soft bag made of decent denier fabric. Inside the bag was the trumpet, a ziplock baggie with a few extra valves, another baggie with 2 mouthpieces and a nice owners manual. There is also a silicone double loop band that holds the front and rear tubing together. There are 3 loops for your fingers to grip the trumpet properly. It feels very comfortable in your hands. Now for the sound.....WoW! I was blown away by how great this thing sounds! I am using the plastic mouthpieces that come with the trumpet (they look identical and have no markings on them, so I assume they are identical), but I was informed through some other reviews that purchasing a standard metal mouthpiece makes it feel a little better. Now keep in mind that I have not played the trumpet since 8th grade! (I played football and was informed by my band leader that to be in the band, I also had to be in the marching band. Well I couldn't do that AND play football, so choices were made!). I played pretty prolifically at a young age and really enjoyed the trumpet as an instrument. Since age 12 I have played guitar and currently own about 14 guitars, a bass, a lap steel guitar, 2 ukuleles and have a home recording studio in my basement, so this trumpet will make a nice addition to the studio for some live "brass" (ok plastic) additions. This thing plays pretty nicely. It only has one drain port, but that should be sufficient. It disassembles pretty easily, so that should make cleaning a simple task. If there was one thing I would like to see (and charge extra for this please) it would be maybe valves made of metal and maybe the inclusion of some valve oil. All in all, this is an excellent value for the price and while it isn't a $1000 King trumpet, it would be great for someone who would like to try the trumpet and not break the bank doing it! I would highly recommend this especially for young students of the trumpet. ... show more

  • Great for Beginners
Color: Purple
I opted for the purple version of this plastic trumpet. The unusual look goes a long way in making learning trumpet fun. Here are some thoughts about it: 1) The low price point makes it great option for someone who his starting out or just wants to casually learn how to play an instrument. It is very light in terms of its weight, which would also make it attractive for a young learner. I did compare it to a regular Jupiter metal trump for students and it was significantly lighter. Having said that, the metal trumpet did sound better and the valves were smoother, which is possibly because this one is new. 2) It's nice that they include extra valves and two plastic mouth pieces. You can also use a metal mouth piece if you happen to have one. I am not sure if this would really enhance the sound. 3) Overall, the sound is better than I thought it would be--which is to say pretty good and mostly like any "normal" metal trumpet you might get for a student. 4) I think there are some advantages to the plastic, including being easy to keep clean, and I have this feeling the valves would be less likely to stick compared to metal. I am giving this four stars based on my expectations versus what it delivered at its cost. This is the price of less than a couple of months of renting an instrument and for the most part, does work like a regular metal trumpet. I think some folks may have given it a lower rating based on its comparison to a traditional metal trumpet. ... show more
