  • Great item with multiple uses
Ordered this to help my special needs adult daughter to read independently. She loves books, but struggles to read on her own. This pen allows her independence and was easy for her to learn to use. I was so impressed that I ordered some to use in our elementary school where I work. Not only can these pens assist students with reading, but they can also serve as a translator for our Spanish speaking students. (It supports other languages too, but we only use Spanish at this time.) The pen can translate English text to Spanish and vise versa. It also has voice translation which can assist communication with our new students who only speak Spanish while they are learning English. ... show more

  • The Pal. THIS is the best ScanMarker model for the VISUALLY IMPAIRED! Built in speaker!
I purchased the ScanMarker Air after it was recommended by a couple of sites as the best text to speech device for the visually impaired. My mother had A LOT of difficulty with that because it required a smart phone app that was difficult for her to use. She's... wait for it... visually impaired, so having to tap a tiny, poorly displayed "play out loud" button (either on her iPhone or 10" Fire tabled made the entire concept moot. There is no built-in speaker in the Air model. I did some research and found the ScanMarker Pal. This version has a built-in speaker and a display screen that displays a big orange button to tap to get the text to speech process going (see photos in product description). There are plenty of ways my mother can accidentally tap the screen and cause herself confusion, but she can always turn it off and on to get back to the big orange button. For instance, the "screen" area is larger than you might think (there is a non-display area toward the "point" of the pen that has a nearly invisible button that appears to be a "back" button in most instances; it's in the area one normally holds the pen and is easily, accidentally touched. The settings options are unfortunately very few, so there's no real way to prevent her from accidentally, unknowingly winding up on a screen she can't see or navigate. That said, this version may be the best product available for her needs. With practice, she should be able to identify the sender and topic of her postal mail and read hard copies of documents. For our purposes it's pretty good at converting text to speech when the scan is done correctly. Easy to use. Good, adjustable speech volume. It reads text in all caps as individual letters (I guess thinking it's an acronym) which is tedious. It has a plastic guide that will help keep the pen moving straight, but I wish that the guide were a full 8.5" instead of just short of a standard letter width so it could be used to scan across an entire document (probably a packaging consideration). I'm sure it has other ScanMarker functions you can read about elsewhere. ScanMarker would be doing itself and the visually impaired community a huge service by making a "pen" tailored to the VI user. One button to start the text to speech and nothing else. That would be perfect. ... show more

  • Non reader
Now she can read words she couldn’t before. She loves it…

  • Works great!
This is great! My daughter has a disorder that makes reading impossible for her. We've tried several different reading pens and this one works the best we've seen. It gets very few words wrong. Only issue I see is that it struggles with different fonts.

  • I think it is a very cool item
I think it is a very cool item. It’s pretty easy to use. It is a sturdy pen And I was able to use it with ease and functions fine. It was pretty accurate. I did have to go over the words a couple of times sometimes for it to register. it does translate from all different languages, but I got it more for the reading. I think it’s a good price point for what it does ... show more

  • Promising Concept, But Scanmarker Pal Falls Short in Execution
The Scanmarker Pal has a cool concept, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. While it does work, you have to line it up perfectly for it to scan text accurately, which can be frustrating and time-consuming. The device also has a noticeable delay between scanning and when it translates or speaks the text, which disrupts the flow, especially during longer tasks. It’s a neat idea with potential, but the slow response time and precision required make it less practical than expected. If you’re looking for a fast, seamless scanning experience, this might not be the best option. ... show more

  • Great tool for language learners
I recently purchased the Scanmarker Pal - Translator Pen & Reading Pen, and overall, I'm quite impressed with its performance. This versatile device has been a game-changer for language learners and those with dyslexia or other learning difficulties. Pros: Multilingual Translation: The pen supports over 100 languages, making it incredibly useful for travelers and language learners. The translations are quick and accurate, which is a huge plus. Text-to-Speech Feature: The reading pen reads text aloud instantly, which is perfect for auditory learners and those with reading challenges. The highlighted words on the screen improve comprehension. Portability: The compact and lightweight design makes it easy to carry around, whether you're at school, work, or traveling. Scan & Export: The ability to scan text and export it as a digital file is a fantastic feature for digitizing documents and creating notes. Cons: Price: The pen is a bit on the expensive side, which might be a deterrent for some users. Learning Curve: It takes some time to get used to the device and its features, especially for those who are not tech-savvy. Overall, this is a great tool for anyone looking to improve their language skills or overcome reading difficulties. While it has a few drawbacks, its benefits far outweigh them. I highly recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable translation and reading pen. ... show more
