  • Bags redesigned in 2019 are defective
Style: 64 - Ounce
I use the Sawyer Squeeze filter for about 2-4 weeks each year, and have been using it since shortly after it first came out. In the past, I used the Sawyer bags exclusively and have never had a bag failure. Even though the bags never failed me, I bought new bags every year. I figured it was cheap insurance to reduce the risk of a heavily used bag failing in the field. All this changed in September 2019 when I bought new bags. They were lighter than the bags I bought in previous years. They were significantly "floppier" than earlier models, which were rather stiff. I did some reading online and it appears the bags were redesigned in 2019. I was suspicious enough of the new bag that I packed an older bag as a backup before I hit the trail. I'm glad I did... The second day on the trail, the new Sawyer bag burst at the top seam, rendering it unusable. A product designed for field use that fails within one day is unacceptable. There are alternative non-Sawyer products out there that fit the Sawyer Squeeze. I'm going to use one of those and suggest that others do the same. Backpacking forums online have good info about more reliable alternatives. ... show more

  • squeeze like toothpaste, not ketchup!
These are Identical to the 32 oz pouch that comes with the Sawyer squeeze (Not the Mini, which comes with the 16oz pouch). While may thru-hikers go to a SmartWater bottle, I much prefer the ability to roll and squeeze a collapsible bag. These are definitely an consumable product and will not last forever. My first bag broke after 500 miles on the PCT and 2 weeks in tropical countries were I was filtering all my water. The weak point is the hard places on either side of the cap, you can extend the lifespan by rolling and squeezing like a toothpaste tube instead of like a ketchup bottle. ... show more

  • Bags failed during 1st use - not as strong as bags that came with filter
So I reached out to Sawyer directly on these bags and...crickets. Here is what I sent them: "I purchased 2 of your Sawyer Products PointOne Squeeze Water Filter Systems on Amazon back in 2016 to outfit my wife and I for backpacking trips. We used these throughout the past few years and decided to replace the squeeze bags this year due to developing small leaks at the seams. I consider this normal wear and tear based on the amount of use these bags received. I purchased a 3 pack of replacement pouches this year. When we received them I immediately noticed they were made differently than the older ones. I don't know if the material composition is different, but they are noticeably thinner. I did wonder at their durability, but they are fairly low priced and I was fine replacing them more frequently if needed. Note: I actually weighed the older/newer bags: the older bag weighs 28 grams, the newer bag weighs 18 grams. Unfortunately, on day one of a planned 3 day trip all three of these bags failed beyond the point of use with the first attempt at squeezing water through my filter. After the second bag failure we attempted to add additional support to the seams with some tenacious tape we carry with us. We taped the seams on one of the failed bags as well as our third unused bag. Both the failed and new bags with reinforced seams failed. At this point we are thinking our primary source of water is now unavailable: not good when you are 7+ miles from the trail head in August. I also carry some Platypus Softwater bottles we typically squeeze filtered water into. I know the treads on the two bottles are different, but I was able to use on of my Platypus Softbottles as a squeeze bag for the remainder of the trip. This solo Platypus bag worked, did not rupture a seam, and kept us from having to treat our water. My first instinct was just to post a review on Amazon where we purchased the original filter and re-ordered the bags from. After further thought I decided to reach out directly to Sawyer, let you know my experience, and see what your thoughts are. I'll own up to the fact that after a few years and hundreds of uses my filters probably develop more back pressure than a new filter. And, comparing the Platypus bottles to the Sawyer bottles is also not a direct comparison either: one would assume the Platypus Softbottles are built better based on the price difference. However, these newer Sawyer squeeze bags should not fail during the first use. I would guess that my usage is average and my filter back flushing practices are average as well. I would also assume that with normal usage these newer bags are experiencing a high rate of failure. I am not sure if these lighter bags are intended to be a direct replacement for the older bags, or if they are two separate product lines. If the older style bags are available I'd love to get a hold of some of them. If they have been discontinued I may have to look at a new filtration system: I won't rely on my Sawyer filter if it's coupled with the newer/lighter squeeze bags." I am really surprised I did not hear back from Sawyer. I love my Sawyer filtration system and have been happy with all Sawyer products I have bought. However, if they are simply going to ignore the issue, which based on the recent reviews is fairly common, I'll just take my business elsewhere. ... show more

  • Short lived....very.
I took two bags on a four day trip. Both bags separated near the neck rendering them useless. Here is the reply I received from the company: "Thank you for reaching out to us. We are always looking for ways to provide new cost effective pouches to be used with our filters. The pouches are designed to be durable but are certainly not indestructible." I repeat, I used the bags for four days before they leaked. I will not be purchasing any of their products, nor will I recommend their products. ... show more

  • Get the 32oz version
Style: 64 - Ounce
I have used Sawyer filters for several years, and over time I have found the 32oz bags to be the best option. They are fairly easy to fill provided sufficiently fast-moving or deep water, and they hold up well. The 16oz version is equally easy to use and durable, but being so small can make them annoying, especially if accessing your water source is a bit precarious. I simply carry a second 32oz bag as a backup when going solo because it just isn't that much bigger or heavier. The 64oz bags, unfortunately, don't hold up very well in my experience. They are large enough that using them is awkward and you have to use a lot of pressure at weird angles, which causes them to break down more quickly than the smaller options. Even without the wear problem, they are so clumsy to use, I get the feeling I'm faster with the 32oz bag anyway! ... show more
